Another year of hilarious gaming-related April Fools Jokes have come and gone. If you were smart enough to avoid the Internet on April 1, 2012 in order to dodge all of the antics of your "pregnant" Facebook friends and other harmless misinformation, we've aggregated all of the gaming-related April Fools Jokes for you right here so you can catch up on the funny.
ThinkGeek Releases Marshmallow Creeps
What's could be better than explosive sugary goodness? Nothing, according to ThinkGeek, who've created some delicious Marshmallow Creeps from Minecraft. Just in time for Easter, these Creeps deliver, "the awesome sugar-fuelled rush that parents love." Yay! I'll take four.
Assassin's Creed Kinect Announced
YouTube user HawkandGamble got a group of friends together to create an epic April Fool's Joke: Assassin's Creed for Kinect. Of course the game isn't real, but it doesn't seem too far-fetched now that we've seen the video. I mean, of course flipping around your enemies and flinging yourself off buildings might hurt, but you've got to be tough if you want to be an Assassin.
BioWare Announces Ship Droid for Star Wars: The Old Republic
As their April Fool's Joke, BioWare has announced the Ship Droid minigame coming to Star Wars: The Old Republic. With this minigame you'll get to clean the cockpit windows, calibrate the ship's food processors, and more. You'll even get to experience the Droid's personal storyline! I think the funniest part of this joke is the epic music that they put over the parts of the trailer detailing your new meal preparation duties.
Valve Software Release Half-Life 3
Valve didn't do anything over elaborate this year, they simply had the front of the Steam Store announce that Half-Life 3 is now available. I'm sure more than a few people crapped their pants when they didn't realize that it was of course, an April Fool's joke. If you've been living under a rock for the better part of 10 years, or if you're not up to date on gaming news, Half-Life 3 is an unannounced title that gamers have been begging Valve to release for a long, long time. If you clicked on the HL3 image, you were treated to the above image. Oh, Valve.
Harmonix Announces Rock Band The Board Game
Harmonix is poised to announce a brand new game on X-Play on April 3, 2012, but for their April Fools Day joke they chose to announce something else: Rock Band The Board Game. Gone are the days of clunky peripherals. Now you can play your Endless Setlists via cards and fake money. Tubular!
IGN Creates Mass Effect 3 Cartoon
IGN created their own Mass Effect 3 80's cartoon. Not only is the animation great, but the voice acting and premise of the cartoon itself is really perfect. Commander Shepard and crew have to defeat the reapers with...rock and roll! Yeah! Watch it, it's funny.
Riot Announces League of Legends 3D Mode
Grab your red and blue glasses, because League of Legends is taking April Fool's Day in to the third dimension. Their joke seems like something Riot might actually consider doing for real in the future, but for now, the fictional mode would allow you to see LoL as you've never seen it before.
Mojang Announces Mars Effect
Remember when Mojang got sued by Bethesda for naming their next game Scrolls? Well, as a snarky jab at the whole incident, Mojang announced that their next game will be a space game called Mars Effect. It'll feature hard science fiction, space battles, and "A game ending that makes sense." Obviously this is poking at sensitive Mass Effect 3 gamers, but I think it's a pretty funny joke.
8-Bit Google Maps
Google totally outdid themselves this year for April Fool's Day, implementing a working 8-Bit version of Google Maps. The 8-Bit Google Maps will be available via a new NES cartridge and they've provided a hilarious demonstration of the "product", that you have to blow in to to make it work.
Blizzard Loves April Fool's Day!
Every year Blizzard Entertainment seems to outdo themselves when it comes to April Fool's Jokes. This year they've come out with four jokes: The Zergotchi, StarCraft 2: Supply Depot, Diablo 3 for the Wii, and Blizzard Kidzz. They're all great, so let's talk about each one.
The Zergotchi Authenticator
The Zergotchi is Blizzard's brand new authenticator. Instead of carrying around a device just for its six digit code, now you get to carry around a little critter that wants you to feed it, play with it, and care for it, otherwise it'll eat your authenticator codes. Check out the full Zergotchi website for all the lava-spitting details.
StarCraft 2: Supply Depot Game
StarCraft 2: Supply Depot is Blizzard's brand new web-browser/mobile game. The 2D action-adventure thriller has you fending off enemies in order to keep mankind, and your Supply Depot, safe. With fascinating dialogue, gut wrenching bonus missions, and multiple endings, Supply Depot is poised to be Blizzard's next big hit. Play it now! And be sure to watch the entire credits seqence.
Diablo 3 Is Coming To The Nintendo Wii
We've heard rumors of Diablo 3 coming to consoles for a long time now, but no one expected the console of choice to be Nintendo's Wii. Maybe that's why the "announcement" was so funny. "The main reason we decided to go with Nintendo was their devotion and enthusiasm to always put gameplay first. Being the top of our core company values, we wanted to make sure this would carry over to the console community," said Blizzard. I can't even imagine the backlash if this were to happen for real, so before I start having a panic attack, let's move on to Blizzard's final April Fool's joke, Blizzard Kidzz.
Blizzard Kidzz: Educational Computer Games
Blizzard Kidzz is Blizzard's new line of educational video games, "set to capture the imagination of a whole new generation of gamers." Blizzard Kidzz titles include Zergling Teaches Typing, Reader Ravager, The Westfall Trail, Turbo Science Vessel, Strat Blaster with Edmund Duke, and Where In Sanctuary is Deckard Cain. Now this is something I can totally get behind. My little brother would love Zergling Teaches Typing ...hell, even I'd love it and I can type over 90 WPM! This is exactly the kind of things kids these days need.
CD Projekt RED Announces The Witcher Musical
Break your wands and burn your hats because The Witcher musical, The Witcher: A Temerian Story, is coming to the House of Duchess Theatre according to CD Projekt RED's April Fool's joke. The production, "is set to resurrect the adult musical genre with its unique and volatile mix of sex and the supernatural," read CD Projekt RED's website. The show will run until the end of September 2012, so grab your tickets now!
Razer Announces SnakeEyes
Ever wanted a scanner in real life, a la Terminator/Vegeta? Then gaming peripheral company Razer has let you down, as their SnakeEyes scanner is simply an elaborate April Fool's joke. Damn! Now how will I know what your power level is?
Paradox Interactive Creates Meta-Metacritic
One of the most entertaining April Fool's jokes for gaming journalists this year came from Paradox Interactive's Meta-Metacritic website. It's a site that looks identical to the real Metacritic, but instead of video game reviews, Meta-Metacritic's a site where gaming journalists are rated instead of the games, complete with a score and "critic" reviews. Brilliant.
Adult Swim Brings Toonami Back
Even though it's not strictly gaming related, I had to let you know about Adult Swim's April Fool's joke: they brought back Toonami! I remember way back when I was a little nerd I'd come home from school and watch Toonami every single day for Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. For one night only, Adult Swim aired these classic Toonami favorites like DBZ, Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star, etc., and they even brought back the host of Toonami, the lovable robot TOM, and his voice actor Steven Blum. Memories!
