Xbox 360 Successor Rumors Surface: Christmas 2013 Release, Dual GPUs, More

The next-generation successor to the Xbox 360 will sport a dual GPU setup, a "four to six" core CPU, built-in Kinect, always-on Internet (to combat piracy), and a Blu-ray drive, numerous unnamed sources have revealed to VG247. The same sources note that the details come straight from Microsoft as it meets with third-parties in advance of the console's release, which is currently targeted for Christmas 2013.

Microsoft is already on record as saying that there won't be any talk "of new Xbox hardware at E3 2012 or anytime soon," from a March 15 statement. That doesn't mean work isn't well underway on whatever hardware will be following the Xbox 360. The lack of reveal doesn't mean that development on the next-gen MS console isn't already well underway. In fact, you can pretty much count on it. Whether or not the specs detailed above are accurate is another matter entirely.

I call bull on so many levels. Why would they decide to go for Dual GPU? It would make the console less stable, use more energy and dish out more heat(and you don't want that). A single card is always better. Always on Internet ? Yep, definitely not true. Some people don't even play games with an internet connection. So they're just not going to be able now ?..

One company will launch first. The other two will follow close behind. We will know for sure when, because decent marketing needs to be implemented months in advance.

Maybe "always on" Internet resembles the Wii, where the system can receive information and maybe do updates. NOWHERE in the article does it say you have to be online to play. 30% of the US alone doesn't have broadband access, What will they do? Do you really think Microsoft will abandon a third of the country?

I'm not liking the always-on internet to combat piracy. It just seems to be like other forms of anti-piracy that ends up hurting those that AREN'T pirating. The internet goes down some time, and I'd hate to not be able to play my game if I'm not connected to the internet. We all know how it feels when the internet goes down. OMG there's nothing to do, I'll just go play my game, oh wait...Hopefully, they can add an offline mode or something.

On a side note, the picture with the 3 Xboxes, and a question mark for the 4th is really bugging me. Shouldn't the 4th be a Slim, and then the 5th a question mark. The Slim should be there somewhere. At the least I would replace the Elite with a Slim. It's just nit picking, but for some reason it's bugging me.

Wonder how Nicole feels about always on....

Does this sound like the type of console she'd be interested in? Of course she's interested...

I live out in the country every summer, with nothing to do at all but work, sleep, and play splitscreen multiplayer with my buddies in our free time. I guess it's super lucky i don't like playing new videogames or spending time doing things other than working and sleeping, and eating sometimes if im feeling adventurous.

Well if the decide to my it code locked for games and must have net. I see them all failing big time and nintendo winning the console wars again due to company's failing. I think it wrong they do this new must have online pass to play there games now. The main reason there doing this is because gaming companys are acting like the music scene. There all in an up roar about not getting a piece of the pie on resale. If companys would stop showing the best part of there games and making them seem good when they suck we wouldn't be in this isssue. I hope sony and MS get there act together soon or when they release there next systems they will be shipped 1 million cupcakes each like bioware.

Funny how I just said something about the piracy on a different post. It's a bigger issue than used game sales.

I don't agree with the "always-on" net thing at all. Everyone at some point in there lives is going to have their xbox (or any electronic for that matter) and no internet access, to not have the option to play a video game unless your online wouldn't be right. Like someone else posted i have a cousin in the army who has an xbox and he plays almost always offline, because he rarely has the luxury of internet access.

Another thing (on the opposite side of that spectrum), that's already happening that i see as wrong, is requiring a code for online play. More and more games are starting to do this. There are a LOT of times where i like to rent before i decide wether or not to buy, it's a totaly RIP to have to spend an extra $10 on a code if i want to try out the multiplayer unless i actually buy it, it's apart of the game. Why do they do that?

So long as they fix the red light problem I could care less what it's other features are.

I agree with many of the posts here. I also feel the life cycle will be longer. As far as GPUs go. Having more cores is better. You can do more with more cores and assign certain programs to different cores reducing work load. Always on is nothing new to the PC gaming market as EA does it now with Orgins and ME3. I wonder about the used games issue that was brought up earlier in the feed. Will they ban used games, or restrict them and force players to buy more content for used games?

A dual GPU set up doesn't mean better performance nor more technology over a single GPU. Unless, Microsoft will try to save money by adopting an old generation architecture and double up. I rather have a more current GPU with more technological options like tessellation and advanced anti-aliasing rather than dual GPU for the sake of fooling people into believe that more is better.

Likewise, more CPU cores does not guarantee better performance. However, unlike the dual GPU set up, if developers optimize the use of all available cores then the games can perform better.

This is why I believe that game innovation is stalled because of consoles current technology. Obviously, it is more profitable to make games for devices that will sell more (in this case more is better).

I still have a hard time thinking that they won't announce a new console this year, especially if the rumors are pointing to a 2013 holiday release. Usually, new consoles are sent through the hype machine, and marketing onslaught for at least a year before it's release. If no announcement this year, then they would be expecting consumers to be prepared for a new console, only 5 months after any possible annoucement next year at E3. Which I doubt they'll do. The Kinect was announced in 09, and then released in 2010, one full year after initial announcement.

I'm predicting that any new console coming from Microsoft, would be announced not only this year, but in the form of pushing the new Windows 8. They would probably focus on how any new console, will finally intergrate your tv, phone, computer, console, and probably also coming soon the new Windows Tablet. All making for one fully intergrated, seamless transition between any Windows product you're using. The dashboard update, and all of the new apps were only the beginning to how the new console's dashboard would look and feel. I'm also predicting heavy emphasis on the Kinect in 2013, and how they will begin to fully use the Kinect for the Xbox in ways we didn't expect. Overall I am not expecting much talk about games for 2013, but instead a lot of announcements in regards to hardware and how all of these devices will now work as one...

But then again, this is strictly my prediction.
