Xbox 360 Successor Rumors Surface: Christmas 2013 Release, Dual GPUs, More

The next-generation successor to the Xbox 360 will sport a dual GPU setup, a "four to six" core CPU, built-in Kinect, always-on Internet (to combat piracy), and a Blu-ray drive, numerous unnamed sources have revealed to VG247. The same sources note that the details come straight from Microsoft as it meets with third-parties in advance of the console's release, which is currently targeted for Christmas 2013.

Microsoft is already on record as saying that there won't be any talk "of new Xbox hardware at E3 2012 or anytime soon," from a March 15 statement. That doesn't mean work isn't well underway on whatever hardware will be following the Xbox 360. The lack of reveal doesn't mean that development on the next-gen MS console isn't already well underway. In fact, you can pretty much count on it. Whether or not the specs detailed above are accurate is another matter entirely.

Please leave Kinect out of the new system. Of course blue ray is a must! I would like to see an interface that is organized and much more functional then the crap that is out on the current 360. I feel like the current system's interface is just an experiemental mess of what they are messing around with for the next Xbox.

I feel if Microsoft release a new console it will most definitely need be backwards compatible, four to six" core CPU, built-in Kinect, a Blu-ray drive, I want all of my digital downloaded games on live to port over, hell while they're at it make it stripper compatible(send strippers to my place every day) But seriously Microsoft worst move would be getting rid of disc format games. It will be a great time for Sony to get back in the game although, only if Sony stops being penny pinching pirates and also release they're new console at a decent price,

I thing if the new console from microsoft does come out then everyone wont play the 360 and if they do why not make a connection like they did with all different types of xbox's. Like the Slim would still have a GT and connect through xbox live. Can the new console be a xbox of some sort? So that way the console would run onxbox live with different enhancments. I also think its to soon because alot of people are still buying the xbox 360 slim and they will release it and the people who just got xbox live will be mad because they just got the good thing and a better awsome thing just came out and why do they even need to pay for a membership unlike PSN

Always-on internet connection? Oh come on, was piracy even that big of an issues in this generation of consoles, let alone the 360? I can already TASTE the new ugly business practices of EA coming to fruition.

    "ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL."

As long as its affordable. We, the gamers, shouldn't have to choose to buy the console or pay the mortgage...!

Didn't Microsoft already say that no next-gen console of theirs would be featured at E3 this year and that they'd be yet again focusing on Kinect? If it were coming in 2013, I'm pretty sure that they would not have said that...

Requiring persistent internet to play games, to me, is like paying way too much to own something only to have to pay rent on it in addition. Because what happens when the servers go down (PlayStation Network)? Good luck trying to play the games you "own."

The online feature with built in kinect has more than the scapegoat of piracy behind it. (the excuse for the masses that really has nothing to do with WHY they are doing it).

Does anyone really think they are losing much money for the few that buy mod chips (after buying a 2nd console for MS benefit) to ONLY play games offline after going through all the trouble that would take to play a single player game and thus necessitating the inclusion of an always on feature? (I bet the software companies pushed hard for this so it took the onus off select publishers for pushing their draconian tactics and creating a disadvantage of those publishers versus those that did not use those draconian tactics...think Ubisoft or the like pushing for EVERYONE to be under the auspices of such draconian tactics to 'tame' the people into accepting this level of control [always open to increasing] so they don't feel the heat, or lose market share to publishers who give gamers the games they want how they want them.)

The real reason beyond the pressure from publishers? Think 'analytics', or basically anytime it's on, you stream data back to MS, who will own it, and sell it or give it to anyone that wants it. Law enforcement or the DHS Nazi's? Check. Your friendly life crushing corporations? Check.

Isn't it great to introduce a new standard to a console, you needing broadband internet? Now, for most people that isn't a problem...but it sure will screw over the more casual users. On top of this, most cable companies are implementing data caps, which means as available bandwidth is decreasing, the console will require it's usage (and I don't see how it won't use more than the 360). Now this is obviously not a huge deal to most, and is the smallest critique covering this small section of analysis, but it still is taking the power out of gamer's hands once again, for no other reason than greed at the top.

(and of course this is from an American perspective, I am well aware of many foreign countries have stricter data limits where once you reach it, your internet goes off....imagine for one reason or another living in a country such as that, who has a provider who will do that, where you go over on the 10th day, and you pre-order a game, only to have to wait up to THREE WEEKS to even play your game OFFLINE.

Also, if it's always on, who is to say MS can't crack down on 'language' or anything else MS deems inappropriate (just look at their idiot founder and all his fascist ideas) and think they can't leverage being 'kicked off' xbox live on a system that REQUIRES the internet to use? That TOO! Is it...you need the INTERNET to use your system...or is it....you need the internet because you have to access XBOX LIVE in order to play your game OFFLINE?

So are they going to force people INTO NEEDING Xbox Live in order to use their system for offline games?

This last part is a guess, but it very much could be possible. It's up to MS to clearly inform us, but I will concede it is far early to expect that info to come out, but not impossible.

Next thing you know they're going to require a Facebook login...you know for that fascist worthless social media site that steals your info, makes it their property, sells it all around, and gives it to anyone they want to..like the CIA...or whatever corporation wants to bombard you with their worthless propaganda to 'convince' you to buy their worthless crap.

Again MS, good luck launching an expensive system in the midst of the worst depression in mankind's history.

The point of "A game is a game, not reality"is a point that your missing though. As developers that is the point of that they want to make it as close as to reality as possible or you got delelopers just making "kiddie games"

To all of the people worrying about DX11 making the system run hotter it will not. DX11 is more efficient than DX9 so the GPUs should run cooler than the current console GPU. I have tried this on games like Shogun 2 on my PC. There is an extreme difference in power consumption. DX11 makes my GPU use less than half the power that DX9 does on the same game. The dual GPU setup with DX11 will probably use close to the same amount of voltage amps as the current single GPU with DX9 unless they run 4k resolutions.

The piracy thing sucks but I really just hope they make it so I won't overheat as easy as the 360
