Layoffs Hit Sega America

Sega Looking To Make Radical Changes In Global Management

A round of layoffs have hit Sega America.  According to Sega of America president and COO Masanao Maeda, the layoffs are due to "challenging economic climate and significant changes within the interactive gaming industry." According to the company, they are streamlining in order to focus on strong Sega IP, specifically, the Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, Football Manager and the Aliens franchises.

According to IGN's sources, the QA department has been hit hardest, and is being shut down for North America. SEGA Europe will be doing the QA for remaining SEGA titles. Again, according to IGN, positions in marketing, design, social, and development have also been axed.

Maeda issued a statement saying:

"Due to the challenging economic climate and significant changes within the interactive gaming industry, SEGA has made the decision to consolidate its publishing business in order to focus on developing digital content and driving its existing IP such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, Football Manager and the Aliens franchise. This realignment of the business around existing and digital IP is a necessity to ensure that SEGA continues to invest and enhance its digital business offering, whilst reducing its reliance on traditional packaged goods.

"The SEGA consumer business is expected to post operating loss due to the challenging economic climate and significant changes in the home video game software market environment in the US and Europe.

"It is essential to streamline [our] organization in the field of home video game software, while shifting to a structure that corresponds to a change in environment, including strengthening development in the field of digital content.

"We decided to narrow down sales titles to strong IPs such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Football Manager, Total War and Aliens which are expected to continue posting solid earnings. In accordance with this, we are cancelling the development of some game software titles."

Although rumors are flying around the internet that Sega America has totally closed its doors, right now, we have no confirmation of this, and Game Informer is explicitly stating that this isn't the case. We'll let you know more when we know more.

Sega has their priorities all screwed up. Let's be honest here, we don't really want to play Sonic anymore. Sonic will never be Mario. Your condemned series fared well but they pretty much dropped that. Too bad... Condemned 2 was incredible.

Sega has been in the dirt for years and years. I mean it once went head to head with Nintendo and Sony on consoles. What happen my friend of yester-years? Looking at Sega now is like finding a childhood friend on the streets not complete done but not doing well. You buy him a drink at a bar and talk about good old times of sonic and how you still have a game gear somewhere.

At the end of the day he looks at you and you look at him and you part with words of gentle comfort, "it was good to see you again," while he says I will be here just a bit longer, because he has no place to stay as you slowly walk away.

I expect Sega to be bought soon hopefully. They have some great older games that could be redone for today's gamers like Shinning force (the turn based game), and crazy taxi.

Sega sucks!!! I have a great idea Sega lets get rid of you Quality department so you can make a ton of junk games! Why didn't you lay off your some of programers, because they are the ones making the junk games.

I still cannot for the life of me figure out how Sonic still qualifies as a strong IP nor how it has such a stupidly loyal and sizable fanbase with the past... what is it now? 13 years of mediocrity/outright crap? Even the stuff that us Genesis owners had before the faceplant into 3D needs varying thicknesses of nostalgia glasses when you look at all of the other offerings that offered comparable experiences whilst being superior in the areas that matter most.

And let's not forget that Sony is being pretty quiet about closing Zipper interactive, makers of SOCOM and MAG. Two games that had poor sales.

Not surprising considering Sony's deteriorating financial situation. Sony has lost huge money for 4 years straight. Sony's cretit rating has been reduced to just 2 levels above junk bonds.

Sega has sucked ever since they gave up on their own systems. Shoulda had the balls to keep going, and actually pull through with something. Make good games, and they will come....just don't side with Nintendo, cause they are the next to fall...come on...Zelda, a 10 out of 10? how much was paid for THAT score? I wouldn't have given it a 1 out of 10.....even my kids blurted out, "eww, those are the graphics?!?", yea, the game is unplayable in my house, and we payed 50 bucks for it! Never again Nintendo, NEVER AGAIN!
