Mass Effect 3 Protest Cupcakes Donated To Charity By BioWare

A shipment of 402 cupcakes sent to the BioWare offices as part of the ongoing Mass Effect 3-ending protest have, in an undeniably classy move, been donated to a local youth shelter. The frosting-topped cupcakes came in three different colors, each one topped with a color-coded A, B, and C in a nod to the RPG's trio of endgame choices.

The cupcake arrival prompted an update from BioWare's Chris Priestly on the developer's forums, thanking fans for their feedback while also explaining that since the mailing was "not done in the context of celebrating the work or accomplishment" on Mass Effect 3, it wouldn't be right to use the cupcakes for an in-office smorgasbord. Instead, the sweet treats were donated to a local Edmonton youth shelter.

Now THAT'S class. Hit the jump for the full text of Priestly's statement.

"Today, we received the 400 cupcakes you collectively sent us through your donations to express your feelings about the endings of Mass Effect 3. We want you to know; we are indeed listening to all fan response and acknowledge your feedback. We appreciate creative and thoughtful attempts like this one.

The gesture certainly gained our attention both with its creativity and deliciousness. However, while we do appreciate that fans were creative in how they expressed their views, after a lot of discussion, we decided ultimately the reason that they were sent was not done in the context of celebrating the work or accomplishment of the Mass Effect 3 team. This is a subtle, but important aspect in determining how to pass the feedback to the team.

BioWare regularly works with many deserving charities, as such it was decided that rather than passing out the cupcakes to staff or wasting good food, to donate them on behalf of our fans to a local Edmonton youth shelter. We know that for the kids that have to use this facility, something as simple as a cupcake is a rare treat and would definitely brighten up their day. Thank you to the fine folks at the local youth shelter for accepting the donation and to the fans who donated the cupcakes. "

Please keep providing your feedback on Mass Effect 3, we’re still listening.

Ugh. Okay, let's try this again. Video games are unique in art, because they include viewer/player participation. In the storytelling/narrative style that Bioware had chosen, the great innovation was the degree to which this player input was woven into the story. This in fact was one of the stated selling points of the franchise. Do I believe in the preservation of artistic integrity? Of course, but I also believe that if Bioware was that concerned with it, why offer all the player choice in the first place? Write a book instead. Make a Mass Effect Movie. Then you have complete control of the narrative. In this case, the reason so many people, including me, were disappointed in the ending was the change in tone. It went from a story that Bioware and I were telling together (Through my choices in the story) to an ending that was simply dictated to me, seemingly regardless of my choices. I'm not waving a pitchfork or burning torch, nor am I demanding a change to the ending. I won't buy any DLC for an updated ending (I'll just watch game footage captures on Youtube) But I do feel let down, and feel the ending as presented was simply bad. Rushed, and not considered to the same level of polish as the rest of the series. The ending simply makes what could have been one of the best franchises I've ever played, into just another above average but ultimately unsatisfying sci fi game.

The true irony here, Bioware chose a fourth option...

Wait....So a bunch of pissed off fans who raised over $70,000 for charity are seen as bad, but when Bioware donates...cupcakes....they are seen as saints? The only reason they did this was to look after all the bad press for Mass Effect 3.

So wait, if you want the ending changed because it sucked, you're an entitled, spoiled brat? And on the flip side, if you complain about the complainers complaining, you're an ignorant, big-corporation loving idiot?

Well, f this crap, I'm outta here.

I love all these people who are commenting to say how pathetic it is that people don't like the ending and are protesting it. I guess it's pathetic to voice your dislike of something over the internet, but it's not pathetic to insult people you don't know and throw out the generic gamer stereotype of "they must live at home and not have a life or a job or care about anything else in the world, blah, blah, blah." Why do they care so much what other people are doing? I find it funny that anyone complaining about the ending is told to get a life or grow up by people who are taking the time to comment about it and essentially resorting to petty name calling. If you really have such a life then why don't you just move on and go do something else with your time? Just wondering.

Sending those cupcakes to BioWare was just a dick move. While I am personally fine with the ending, I'm pretty sure that if I wanted BioWare to change it, I wouldn't insult them outright like that.

Apparently, some people didn't get the memo that Shepard is a fictional character.

i honestly don't understand why people are fighting so hard for a different ending.I honestly dont see what the huge problem it is, I was actually satisfied with the ending. This whole thing is childish and the people fighting for it need to find a damn day job.

Something tells me there are a few staff members around there that didn't need any cupcakes anyways.

For some reason the logic of sending cupcakes as a protest to a game you don't like goes over my head. I wouldn't accept them either. Funny that kids these days are protesting a video game. Never mind the starving children being murdered in Africa or anything. Games when I was a kid were very light in the story department unless you played RPGs. Which even then RPGs weren't mainstream gaming until FF7. You just accepted the story of a game as what it was. Besides, it's super (exploited) to try and force a writer to change what they choose to write.

People who talk bad about the ending have obviously not watched the "Indoctrination Theory" video.

A classy move by Bioware instead of throwing them out or eating them.

But still they suck because of the ending.
