The next PlayStation console, the PS4, may be called (or codenamed) Orbis. The next-gen Sony console rumors come from Kotaku's sources and reveal a holiday 2013 release date.
According to Kotaku's sources, Orbis will have an AMD x64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU, a high-end PC card. The Orbis would also have a resolution of 4096x2160. Most households don't have HDTVs that are capable of displaying that, yet. The Orbis will be powerful enough to play 3D games in 1080p.
That's all the good news. The bad news: The system reportedly won't be backwards compatible with PS3 titles. If you think that's surprising, then you're not going to like this. The Orbis will have some type of feature that will prevent gamers from playing used games. Supposedly, games will be purchased on a Blu-ray disc or via PSN download and only be playable on one PSN account. It's not clear how Sony would limit the use of retail copies. It's possible a used copy would only give you access to a trial of the game.
So what does Orbis mean? Wikipedia says it's a Doctor Who audio play. That doesn't help us at all unless Kaz Hirai will be the 12th Doctor. In Latin Orbis means "circle, orb, ring, disk, orbit, coil/ round / rotation." This could indicate the shape, the logo of the console. Orbis could just be the codename, similar to the Kinect's first name: Natal.
No matter what it's called, I'm going to be honest; this doesn't sound like a console I would buy. The anti-used games policy seems to punish gamers. The Orbis is rumored to be a few years away, but Song will still have a strong showing at E3 2012. Are these the features you want from the PS4?

If this rumor is true than the PS3 will be 7 years old when it gets a replacement.
A longer life than the PS1 and PS2
PS...1995 to 2000 before replaced by PS2...5 years
PS2...2000 to 2006 before replaced by PS3...6 years
PS3...2006 to 2013 before replaced by Orbis...7 years
Wii...2006 t0 2012 before replaced by WiiU...6 years
360...2005 to 2013 before replaced by 720...8 years
Now that's staying power.

I'll believe it when I see it, I could see Sony doing something like that.

Modern Warfare 3 made $775 million in it's first five days of sales. Dev's don't need to make any more money, they are just getting pathetically greedy. If $775 million isn't enough for infinity ward to pop out a few new multi-player maps for the next Call of Duty tile (lets be honest that's all they're doing) then the gaming industry is in desperate need of a restructure. I remember when game's were about having fun, now that they have become the status quo and everyone needs to have the newest AAA title just because their friend owns it, games have become about nothing more than profits... and that's just sad. I sincerely hope Sony is smarter than this.

i think it just TOO early to tell but thats just me, maybe we will hear something at E3

I honestly don't know what is worse, the fact that Sony is considering this or that there are consumers on this message board condoning it. Modern Warfare 3 made $775 million in the first five days on the market. That is the first 5 days!!! we need to stop listening to companies when they say "I am only making $775 million off of people when I could be making $800 million.". That is greedy and pathetic. Developers make huge money when they do their job right, and if they don't well that's their fault. Sony also isn't taking into account, no matter what they do there will be a way around it. There are ways around the current PSN, Steam and virtually any other digital platform I can think of (not that I use or condone them). Devs are already putting out their games that sell millions of copies within days for 60$ a pop, if that's not enough money for you, maybe we need to get some fresh companies who realise video games are about fun, not profits.

If this bad news turns out to be more than a rumour we should do an OCCUPY SONY type protest.Remember SONY that the CONSUMER is # 1,and you have to give the people what they want!Or the people will NOT buy tour product.

I'm tired of reading stuff like this.."anti-used games policy seems to punish gamers". That's such an immature way to look at the situation. If that's true, then currently developers are being punished. It should be very simple. Developers make games, and we buy them. Why do we need to sell our old games, buy used, and take money out of the pockets of the game creators? That's the sloppy side of the gaming industry, and I will be glad to see it go.

Wow sony really out did themselves on this one not only are they banning used games but the backwards compatible ban seriously thats what they do to all the faithful gamers who stuck by sony during that hack and PSN down time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats so FUBAR !!!! Ps3 is where i will stay at for sure and if this orbis does happen might as well buy an XBOX 360 what a waste and traitor move.

Lets face it folks 2014 either means the continuation of the current era or the beginning of whole new era of change for better or for worse. For example: If "SONY" decide to go the rumored route, by 2013 this would make the current PS VITA a passing fad that was just a great idea in the current era just to quench gamers waiting for new games through the current transition of game technology, which would leave SONY one obvious choice to make. (A.) Make the current PS VITA model immediately compatible with the new PS4 standard to keep from having to play catch up with the competition. (B.) Leave both the PS VITA and PS3 behind in favor of the completely new standard by the year 2014.
This will totally alienate gamers to also be forced to make the tough choice ahead. (A.) A gamer will have to decide to hold onto there current console collection of games and long list of DLC tide to every game they ever bought in the last era and suck it up to fork over more money just to start all over again in the "NEW INDUSTRY ORDER" or (B.) A gamer can be forced to sell of all there invested console collection just to keep up to date with the "NEW INDUSTRY ORDER" being the new era of the game console, which can very well bring gamers and the gaming industry back to where we started back in the year 1999 when SEGA's dropping out of the hardware race was the highlight of the cold turkey start of the last era with the PlayStation 2 followed by the XBOX and Nintendo GameCube leading the gamers and the industry up to the year 2013.
Now all gamers and developers have the same choice that was presented back in the year 1999 which led the industry to develope mostly for the console leaving the PC as a last choice. Now that choice will eventually be reversed causing developers to choose PC first leaving the console as a lacking last choice. Which is highly possible considering how advanced yet inexpensive high-end PC hardware is to manufactur in the current state of computer technology.
Most gamers of today could theoretically build a great entry-level gaming PC for around $600 - $800 which could easily be of equal or greater quality as the current generation game console, which isn't much to ask for most gamers ether shopping for a new PC or just the upgrade graphics card and some extra parts to go along with. Also considering both "Microsoft" and "SONY" have already made their "MOTION" peripherals available as a standard add-on to the PC market. This detail alone could easily show the connecting dots which inevitably lead gamers and developers right back full curcle to where it all began in the 1970's to the early 1980's making the PC once again become to one machine to rule them all from corporate business spread-sheet apps to home console games. ["Apple II" , "Atari ST", "Coleco Adam", "Amiga"] etc.. Are all examples of this sort of technological revolution making today's commodity off the shelf PC no acception to this rule.
I personally look forward to going back to a time and standard when gamers, developers and business pros alike were free to explore the new horizons of computer technology which made this culture what it's supposed to be. Exciting and fresh spurring fond memories for all walks of life, from the child with the wild imagination to the adult visioning new was to make life a little bit easier for people throughout time and around the globe.

Wow. That's REALLY gay... There's a possibility that you won't be able to play used games?! I think I'll stick to my PS3... At least until they pull their heads out of their butts.

Wasn't the PS9 teaser commercial from like a decade ago shaped like an orb?

This purchase model works with Apple and Android app stores (games are linked to the purchaser account so can't be sold second hand) but then most of the games are below $10.
It works with Steam (again, games are linked to a specific account), and if you're patient enough games will eventually end up on special for lower than $10. New releases are still priced very high and yet that doesn't seem to slow down the sales on Steam as long as the game is good.
So this model could work for Sony, but only if it is done right. Lower overall game prices and Worldwide releases of all titles would be things that they'd need to look into before gambling against alienating the existing console player base.

Why not just call it codename: PS4 and cut the middle man out?
DinoHaxxSaur
All they have to do is put a code that you would enter to make the game playable just as they do with online access the only difference is this code would be imputed to allow you to hit start at the main menu screen. If you download the title online then the game would also download the key to allow you to play the game. The bad thing is if you didn't have online connectivity your system would be useless. Unless they have a way to tie your code to your PSN or Gamertag while offline. This would only allow the one gamertag to play the game and create no way of allowing you to play used games. Unless you hack your system. Also since the code is to one gamertag it would also allow that gamertag to only play that game. This is how I think there going to screw with the used game sales. It's really simple if you think about it. So basically you don't have the code you can't hit start and start any game no matter what or input the code and an update would allow you to play the game. This also helps if you get a new console cause you can just redownload the key to play that game with the gamertag it's currently under.

Lol, if Microsoft or Sony make a system that won't allow the usage of Used Games they might as well leave the gaming industry. Nintendo will thrive so much on that fact alone.

Seriously, the repetitive posts on this thread are really annoying, and those people that continuously post the same thing over and over again need to re-think that, or otherwise they will have comments blocked for spamming.
That being said, I do not like this, if in fact this report is true. Backwards compatibility has been one of the best selling points for Sony, from the PS2 to the PS3. I have a 60 GB system and i love it. It has full backwards compatibility for all the classic games that i love. Taking that away, and (more than likely) charging an arm and a leg for a new console, will be one reason why I won't buy the new console when it launches.
As far as the used games avenue, companies are starting to notice the trend in buying used games and are already charging us more for them. Besides griping about high game prices, you should worry about this 'online pass' revolution that is happening with a lot of titles with multiplayer capability. Games like Mortal Kombat, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, among others, require you to enter in a one-time use code that allows you to play the game online. If you buy the game used, borrow it, or buy it from a personal friend, you then have to purchase an online pass to be able to access the same content that the game's original owner probably used. After spending $60 on a game, they use the code, play the game for a while, then get rid of the game once they no longer need it. then somebody else finds it, wants to buy it, then goes home to play it, and can't play it online because they need a valid online pass code to be able to access multiplayer features. They are discovering the used games market, and are already taking steps to get some money off of it.
While i am in agreeance that not allowing used games to be played entirely is one of the worst possible ideas ever made just because companies are not making money, then look at how they are trying to make money otherwise. Online passes and future DLC which is already on disc (it just needs a purchased 'code' to unlock the content) are how they are starting to gain some of that mone back.
Also, games don't sell well or get sold because people need money, so they sell the game back, or trade it in because they don't have enough for a new game. This is party to blame on the bad economy. If it weren't so bad, and people had jobs and were able to make money and spend it on things like video games, then not a whole lot of games might necessarily come back to these stores used.
Look at more facts than just your own opinion on this matter before you form an opinion. That way you're more informed when making an argument.
