The next PlayStation console, the PS4, may be called (or codenamed) Orbis. The next-gen Sony console rumors come from Kotaku's sources and reveal a holiday 2013 release date.
According to Kotaku's sources, Orbis will have an AMD x64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU, a high-end PC card. The Orbis would also have a resolution of 4096x2160. Most households don't have HDTVs that are capable of displaying that, yet. The Orbis will be powerful enough to play 3D games in 1080p.
That's all the good news. The bad news: The system reportedly won't be backwards compatible with PS3 titles. If you think that's surprising, then you're not going to like this. The Orbis will have some type of feature that will prevent gamers from playing used games. Supposedly, games will be purchased on a Blu-ray disc or via PSN download and only be playable on one PSN account. It's not clear how Sony would limit the use of retail copies. It's possible a used copy would only give you access to a trial of the game.
So what does Orbis mean? Wikipedia says it's a Doctor Who audio play. That doesn't help us at all unless Kaz Hirai will be the 12th Doctor. In Latin Orbis means "circle, orb, ring, disk, orbit, coil/ round / rotation." This could indicate the shape, the logo of the console. Orbis could just be the codename, similar to the Kinect's first name: Natal.
No matter what it's called, I'm going to be honest; this doesn't sound like a console I would buy. The anti-used games policy seems to punish gamers. The Orbis is rumored to be a few years away, but Song will still have a strong showing at E3 2012. Are these the features you want from the PS4?

A lot of you guys are not looking at the overall picture. Backwards capability is let's face it folks, a dead technology and no more then a novelty made when the Ps2 came out for reasons not relevant to today, and before the rise of online arcade gaming. When it made sense for the PS2, it was because there was no real online console gaming, so games lost their luster and appeal pretty fast after you beat it. Or the really good ones that was on the first playstation, wasn't all that far behind in graphics compared to the PS2. Also the PS2 made the PS1 literally obsolete in regards to what the PS2 was capable of doing besides video games, and they knew people will not use their first playstation but still wanted to possibly play their playstation games, and they were still making games for the playstation while the PS2 was out and in full swing. So there were actually legit reasons to wanna play backwards at times.
Today with PSN, XBLA, and the Wii Store the need to keep your old games to play on the new console is pointless. For one, neither Xbox or Sony has their entire list of last gen games even available for backwards play. With current gen consoles game marketplace, you can just find the game you're looking for and download it. If they don't have it, tough, just move on because everyone else has already. I'm only assuming this, but I'm pretty sure Sony is aware of all the time and money consumers have invested into the PS3 library. For all we know they might even have a system to where through your PSN accounts, proof of purchase or registration to the games you have on PS3 could probably carry over to the new Playstation if that game is available for full download on the new console. But even if it's not, who said you have to throw out your old console just because a new one is out??
If you're so hurt over backwards compatibility for your PS3 games. Why not just keep your PS3, and when you are just dying to play a last generation PS3 title instead of the over the top awesomenes of whatever new game that will come out on their beast of a next gen machine, then you will have it there for your enjoyment. Yeah that means you'll have to either have to swap out consoles to do it, or have both hooked up at the same time...but seriously, what true gamer haven't done that before or isn't doing that now??
As for no used games, I would miss the ability to buy a game I'm not too sure of at a really low price. However, the death of used games will not only force gamers to pay full price for a game, but it go both ways in forcing developers to do a lot more to convince gamers why their game will be worth the 60 or maybe even 70 price tag we may see for a new title or else risk gamers not buying a new title at all. Causing less shovelware, tacked on multiplayer for certain games, and short lived campaigns...Which are some of gamers most common gripes when talking about current pricing on new games. Also we have to understand that we pay high prices for games, not because of the game data alone, but also for packaging, and putting all that data on a cd-rom, or dvd formatted disc. Take away the cost of making a game, by reducing it to digital download, then you eliminate high cost for a game. So a new game could be as low as 40 maybe even 30 bucks if all you're doing is downloading the data. The inclusion of that new tech, will also allow the option of a gamer to pay to play, meaning through your account subscription you can have the option to play the game and save all you want, but you never really own the game outright...Onlive anyone?? Or you can choose the option to pay a higher price and download the full title to your hard drive. Again, all of these are just possible ideas, but they will definitely come up with new methods to better fit the new console. Just like with this current gen of consoles, everything changed, and we were okay with it.

this is a stupid stupid stupid idea!!!!!!!!! thats why ps2 was so dope...at least till ps3 came out. it played ps1 and ps2 games. it was awsome. Yes it was disapointing when the ps3 came out and i cudn play my ps2 games on it so i hadda save my ps2 system. i mean what a waste! i have 50 ps2 games and there not compatible with the ps3. the remastered ps2 trilogy games made up a lil....prince of persia, god of war, jax and daxter. but if the "orbis" <-----stupiddddd name btw, doesnt play those games then its all POINTLESSSS. sony your messing up. with the hacks and psn shutdown and name change. its all supppper gay and stupid. and if this system has these functions and qualities you will lose alot of your buyers and supporteers. im out. ps3 is still new. xbox sucks u dnt have to compete that much by making up stupid stuff lyk this.

Here is my problem with this whole "Anti-Used Games" Issues, some older games just can't be found or purchased new anymore. Sometimes you just don't get around to purchasing a game and when it's sequal comes out and gets rave reviews you want to go back and play that first one but it's no longer in print so you have to find a used copy.
To be completely honest I usually buy games new and when I do get a used game it's usually a title that is a couple of years old that I didn't get around to playing when it was new, for instance I missed the boat on Mass Effect but now I really want to play it so I had to search far and wide for a copy of the game.
I currently own all three systems and I'll tell you one thing, in the next-gen I won't own any system that doesn't allow for used games.

No backwards compatibility is forgivable, while totally NOT cool. But blocking used games? deal-breaker. Sorry. Hey x720, new best buddy!

the next gen systems will kill console gaming....im calling it right now.

No backwards compatibility, no problem. I'll just keep my old PS3 for when I get the urge. Can't buy used games ? No problem I'll wait until games go on sale or look for discount offers.
magusat999
I will be happy when the PS4 comes out - maybe then I can afford to buy a PS3...
geomancer21
Why have backwards compatibility when you can release a cheaply done remaster and make you rebuy a game you already own?
People do realized thats the only reason it was removed right?
Fatality97
If microsoft and sony do this, I'll smash my ps3 and go back to my S-NES.

I would never thought that the new PS4,Would not be backwards compatible. Not only that,But not to play used games on it ,Is a disater ready to happen! To many people are talkng about how the ps3 started ,Sony needs to remember that and not make that mistake.I would like to see,And play the ORBIS,But with what Sony said about what it won't have ,Makes me hold on buying it.

Backwards compatibility doesn't really bother me, I will still have a PS3 and PS2 (which are backwards compatible). I don't really buy many games these days either, so I typically buy new as it is. But it doesn't make much sense to limit functionality (or stop the functionality) of used games. I'm also the only person who plays my PS3, so the PSN id specific things don't affect me. But for a family that is going to be a big issue if you can only have one account per disk/download.
After hearing some of these crazy ideas from "sources," I hope Sony takes the consumer into consideration instead of their pockets. I hope they keep PSN free too, that is a pretty good selling point.

I personal have had all the systems PS3 sucks for gaming best blue-ray out there. X-box 360 best gaming system and media center around. People say it cost to be online your right it does! BUT how much money do u spend in a day or a month on crap? Take that money and buy a top notch online gaming console and play. This is coming from any APPLE user.
BeastLord
I don't know if anyone has brought this up yet or not, but this also eliminates rental services. You'd think those companies would be making a fuss about this as well.
swcarr21
I personal don't play used games or buy any old games I buy new play beat then get rid of. I I have a wild hair I go RENT a old game and play it. THEY STILL DO RENT GAMES !
Gungan
Lol. No used games, and only one PSN ID per game? This better be an April fools joke, cuz otherwise, I'm out.
