As you probably already know, the hero of Assassin's Creed 3 will be a half Blackfoot Indian, half British man named Connor Ratohnhaké:ton. The only way he could be more of an outsider during the American Revolution would be if he was a She. Ubisoft thought about the possibility of having a female Assassin's Creed protagonist, but ultimately decided that a female wouldn't work.
"It's always up in the air," Assassin's Creed 3 creative director Alex Hutchinson told Kotaku. "I think lots of people want it, [but] in this period it's been a bit of a pain. The history of the American Revolution is the history of men."
"There are a few people, like John Adams' wife, [Abigail]—they tried very hard in the TV series to not make it look like a bunch of dudes, but it really is a bunch of dudes," It felt like, if you had all these men in every scene and you're secretly, stealthily in crowds of dudes [as a female assassin], it starts to feel kind of wrong. People would stop believing it."
While I totally understand that a female assassin isn't possible in the universe of Assassin's Creed, it makes me a little sad. I love having the choice of playing as either sex, and I think a girl protagonist in Assassin's Creed would really shake things up.

I think taht a female Assassin, at least at some point, would make a lot of sense and perhaps expand the series' fanbase a bit. Because, when you get down to it, there are only eight female Assassins mentioned throughout the entire series, both games and literature. The women from the Sanctuary, Claudia, Lucy and Rebecca, and that chick from the comic. (I never could remember her name.) It certainly has interesting possibilities and would shake up the series. Perhaps, like Mass Effect, SWTOR, or every other MMO out there, you could choose to be a male, or female. And perhaps, in the future (if there is a future) there could be female Assassins. However, one thing to not stray from is consistency. Meaning no race (color of skin, not species. I'm not racist, trust me.) choosing or classes to pick from. Because when that happens, Assassin's Creed ceases to be the game we all know and love, and turns in to WOW.

obviously there's no female protagonist in AC3 cuz they are to busy being in the kitchen, DUH, what a dumb question is this?

I was hoping Assasin's Creed 3 would feature a female Assassin. Little bit disapointed. Maybe in the next series. If we survive 2012 that is.

I had to just read the line, 'History of Men' and just shake my head.
Although I take what's written in Wikipedia with a grain of salt, even IT has several entries on women who fought in the Revolution:
Margaret Corbin - fought at Fort Washington when attacked by Hessian troops. Took over firing a cannon after her husband fell. She was actually the first woman in US history for be awarded a pension for military service.
Deborah Sampson -impersonated a man to fight in the Continental Army. Wounded in 1782 and honorably discharged from West Point in 1783.
They may be exceptions to the rule of 'a history of men' but at least there would have been a precedent. Not to mention, a woman back then would have been invisible to most men back, a good thing to have, especially if one were an assassin.

A history of men, huh? Apparently, Hutchison knows nothing about the American Revolution. He should check Wikipedia, because a lot of women contributed to the war.
However, I can't take anyone who uses the word "dudes" seriously during a press conference. What are we? 15? And perpetually stuck in the 80's?
There was a female assassin in the game, Lucy. However, they killed her off pretty quickly. I, personally, would have liked to have seen her in the animus. I'm pretty sick of Desmond by now.

A future female assassin in the series would make sense but just not while a male modern time or future protagonist is in the animus. There are multiple comments that already state the awkwardness that would happen in a cross gender transition thruogh the animus. such as romances that would just be strange or just a mangoing through the life of a woman. Just like you wouldnt say hey heres a female protagonist thats really awesome but im a guy so i want to have a protagonist the same gender instead, so that i can connect better, nobody would because why change just one thing if you can connect to the character regardless of his or her gender. i know girls who play the AC games and wouldnt really find a point to having a female protagonist.

RIIIIIIIGHT ...
And Connor fits in... He doesn't tho.
That is weak sexist logic... "the history of men" ...give me a break. It's purely simply sexist. Period.
A part Native American protagonist could easily be female.... AND BLEND ...that's what assassins do.
At least give players the choice and keep your ignorant assertions to yourself.

I will say though that it might be a little awkward for Desmond to use the Animus for a female character BUT it would be an interesting idea if Ubisoft handled it well.
BH16
I'm not very surprised to hear this from Ubisoft considering similar remarks/controversies have started with them around this issue in the past.
But I think I'll just shake my head emphatically, walk away and give someone else my money.
assasinoftheyear
If you think about it in the movie salt anjalina jolie was a russian assasin so it would be pretty cool
Jetblackc22
While reading throught the comments, it does seem like it would make sense for there to be a female assassin. However, it would probably be weird to have Desmond, a male character, going into the Animus and running around with the lady parts. Maybe if Desmond took a break from the Animus, and Lucy stepped in. Haven't played the AC2 sequels so don't know if this wouldn't make sense, just a thought.
cry_of_paine
So let me get this straight, since I haven't played the game. There is a character who is known as the Animus? That makes this a rather ironic conversation, considering one of the definitions of the word:
an inner masculine part of the female personality in the analytic psychology of C. G. Jung
pest3311
Know your history. During the American Revolution many women doubled as spies. So they could not be assassins?
AntiquesRoadwarrior
Why didn't he just say, "Our target demo are dudes." "The history of men?" What the crap does that mean? Yeah, moron, it wasn't the history of Assassins either. So I'm supposed to believe that George Freakin' Washington was an Assassin, but that there might be one with lady parts is beyond my comprehension? That was a very sexist answer, even if the act itself wasn't.
I also think people's argument against a black (or other minority) Assassin is rather convenient. Desmond probably isn't directly descended from Aryans, folks, and if he was that would go against the message of these games. At least, I think it would. Sometimes it's hard to tell what those French Canadians at Ubisoft are thinking.
I would love to see a list of AC characters that were not white or friends of Altair (who seemed pretty white). How hard would it have been to throw in one Asian, one African into a game with hundreds of NPCs? I realize the world was more provincial in those days, but I ran into Da Vinci like 5 times alone. Unless someone convinces me otherwise, Ubisoft Montreal is a pretty bigoted developer.

"Assassin's Creed with a female lead? What is it a cooking sim?"
"No need to hide a hidden blade when you're in the kitchen."
"LAME, why would I want to kill some guys and instead of buying more weapons to kill guys with, I buy jewelry, dresses, and other female crap?! LAME!! *Goes off to watch My little Pony: Friendship is magic while commenting on one of the forums about waiting for a Pony game that has the same things he bashed being in a AC game with a female lead*
BUT SERIOUSLY, A female assassin would make a little sense than they give credit for. History was centered about men, but women did a lot of stuff out of the public eye and being an assassin could of been one of them.
Mashpotaters
At this point I think that a female assassin would have to be done sort of how Catwoman in Batman:AC was, meaning that you get a taste, but they aren't the main playable character. It's just an issue with the time settings, and scenarios that the AC franchise uses. I think it will work if they choose a time period were being a woman doesn't stick out strangely given the situations that a protagonist would be in. If the important players in that history were men, it wouldn't make much sense for there to be a female protagonist.
Present time, we could have a female assassin protagonist because currently we have equality to the point where men perform roles usually meant for women, and women perform roles meant for men, but history is different. Having a female lead completely depends on the time period.
animeandmangarule
While playing as a female in AC:3 probably wouldn't work too well, since they seem to put out a new Assassin's Creed game on a yearly basis, maybe the next one they have can be a female assassin ancestor from a different branch of the modern day Assassin's... with a setting in ancient Japan or Egypt..

"What do you think about female lead characters?" -- I'm a sucker for games with female leads and tend to buy them most, and always play female chars in games when there's the option. I just find it cool as a guy gamer, but then I'm attracted to strong female personalities in real life I suppose.
frontrow84
I totally understand what they mean by this. I don t mean to sound chauvinistic but if you look at the time periods and places the AC games have taken place in, most women were not included in social circles or given much of any opportunities at all. Sad but historically true. Even going forward from here I don t think AC games could ever really build a game where you could chose to be a female or male. I think they would have to build a game concentrated specifically around being a female, which I m all for! As they approach the 19th and 20th centuries I think that, should Ubisoft choose, there would be some awesome opportunities to mold a story around a female assassin. I personally think if the franchise continues to the early 20th century the WW 1 era, through prohibition and the women s support (and suffrage) of America through WW2 would be a great place for that. But of course I believe there are other opportunities as well. Gypsies, flappers, pioneers, maybe even a tie to Mata Hari!
jdavis89
It definitely wouldn't make sense to start so late in the series by introducing a female assassin as the main protagonist. At least not to be controlled by Desmond. However, it would make sense if say, Lucy were to get in the animus and play as one of her female ancestors. The back-stories of the side characters isn't well developed, nor is it explained how they became involved with the assassins (unless I just missed that).
