Upcoming civil planning simulator SimCity will require EA's Origin and always-on Internet, but you'll be able to buy it on other downloadable services. Basically, no matter where you buy the game, you'll need an Origin log-in to play it. The game's focus on multiplayer and the world-wide economy require an internet connection in order to function.
Required internet aside, the game itself sounds amazing, and uses the Glassbox ending to simulate a huge array of different aspects of a city, including the economy, traffic patterns, and daily lives of the citizens of your city. Check out the video under the "Read More" tag for a look into SimCity.

I was really looking forward to this game, but I will not be forced to use yet another service for PC games. Steam is as far as I'm willing to get and even that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. We should start a letter writing campaign and complain about this to EA. Might do nothing but it will express are anger about this issue.

I haven't trusted EA since they started forcing Origin down our throats. Origin is a joke program, the defense I hear about it on the EA forums is that it's still in "beta" which if you ask me is a load of crap! This is a fully operational if still fully flawed program that borders on spyware I have to put on my PC just to run their games. If this was still "beta" then they wouldn't be forcing us to use it. Some suit up the EA ladder got paid an outrageous amount of money for this idea and they can say "it works" and "people like it" simply by saying "look at all the accounts we have" because they are still in the midst of transferring our old EA accounts. "Looks at all the games people play on Origin" could simply be taken as "look at all the people we are forcing to use this service." If we were given a choice we would choose to NOT use it. There are far better services out there they could put their games on and we would enjoy them much more. It's moves like these that are deteriorating the gaming world and punishing hard core gamers. It's a pity the casual gamer doesn't know enough about these issues or they would probably agree with us.
And now we won't be able to play used games on consoles anymore. Greed for Profit, that's what this company represents and that's what this world is coming to. Such a shame!
BOYCOTT ORIGIN!!!!

Nope.

This is not news, it is expected. Afterall, it is EA.

Valve games require Steam so why is anyone surprised that EA games require Origin? SMH. If you have a problem owning your games digitally, then buy them on home consoles where they don't require Steam or Origin. But since most EA games are so good that I never want to get rid of them, I don't have a problem buying them digitally. Oh, and unlike Steam, you only need to open Origin once to buy and download the game and then you never have to open Origin again.

Require an Origin account regardless hmm? Interest gone, sale lost.

So what happens when I unplug my pc while on vacation? If they include som of the old Origin classic games I might go for this- too bad, Sim Sity was one of the first pc games I bought...

there needs to be Sim City: Antarctica,
where you drop 1 building in the middle and always win.

"... and uses the Glassbox ending to simulate a huge array of different aspects..."
I think you mean Glassbox *engine*. Did you type this article on an iphone?

Well I guess EA can keep this game because I wont be buying it. Havent they learned from C&C 4 that BOMBED due to this feature that PC gamers WILL NOT always have a connection. Troops in the war, people on the go.. Not everyone always has a connection..
EA = FAIL
I wish EA would just go away all together. I really have stopped buying there games all together.

It isn't a surprise, but I want this game. EA has unfortunately made the decision that I will never give them money again for a PC game because of all this Origin junk. I just will not be forced to have 2 separate game libraries.
I'm sure eventually they will turn around and be back on Steam. There are plenty of Windows Live games on Steam. EA needs to just get with the program and do the same. If I have to have an Origin account (which I basically do because I had an EA account with Mass Effect 2) inside the game, than whatever, but I want all my games are in one place, not scattered across various services.

I am not going to buy the lasted SimCity if I need constant internet. I do not trust EA after they pulled support for a dozen games a few weeks ago. This means if they feel there IT is too busy with other games they can cut support when ever they feel like it. Funny you want to in courage pricacy keep pulling stuff like this and watch the priated copies growth! EA what freaking joke.

Suppose we can also look forward to them shutting down the servers after a year, do to lack of interest.
Fills me with sadness, Maxis games were some of my favorite growing up.

I like how EA basically has to force Origin on people. How is that going to make it successful again?
Also, needing an internet connection is all well and good when you have a stable connection and all, but there are times when my internet cuts out or just loses a great deal of strength for no reason. I'm sure there are people out there with similar issues as well.

You forgot to tag this "PC Gaming"

and to think I was mildly interested before

I don't really like the ideal of this. Always-On internet doesn't always work out in the end either due to server problems on their end, or internet problems on the ISP's end or some other little thing inbetween.
This should be an optional multiplayer-like mode and not affect those who would rather play quietly without any social interaction from anyone else. They've done offline/singleplayer just fine in previous games, I'm sure it could be done again.
Either way, until it's optional I'm not getting this game... was really looking forward to it as well.

I want to see how long EA can keep on trucking in the PC market the way they do.

As long as I can still run mods that changes textures and models, I'd be fine with this.
On an aside, since a person's cities is constantly interacting with other people's cities, does this mean they will do away with cheat codes? I'll usually start using cheat codes on my successive playthroughs just to change the experience.
