World of Darkness MMO Revealed

The World of Darkness MMO by CCP Games has some details emerging from the shadowy depths of CCP Fanfest in Iceland this year, and plenty of them have fans of the White Wolf tabletop roleplaying game cheering wildly. Curious what the fuss is all about? Read on, mortal.

World of Darkness is an upcoming sandbox MMORPG by CCP Games, developers of EVE Online and DUST 514, which both take place in a shared universe that spans not just solar systems, but game platforms as well. Speaking of which, if you haven't heard of a PlayStation 3 DUST 514 player call in an orbital strike from an EVE Online PC player in real time, go check out our DUST 514 preview. It is, quite frankly, awesome.

Taking lessons from EVE and DUST, CCP is looking to create a refreshing new look at the World of Darkness through MMO gaming. How? Some of the first details came during a World of Darkness keynote at CCP Fanfest 2012. Here are the really juicy bits you can sink your teeth into:

  • The game will contain the original vampire clans from Vampire: The Masquerade. That means Brujah, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, Ventrue, Lasombra, Tzimisce, Assamite, Followers of Set, Gangrel, Giovanni, Ravnos, Cappadocian, and Salubri. Which of these are playable and which will merely act as NPCs remains to be seen. Reynir Haroason sort of... spoke more than Senior Producer Chris McDonough probably would have liked, so take all of that with a grain of salt. As Reynir phrased it so simply and vague, “they are the originals.”
  • On a similar note, those who have been unhappy with the 2005 revision to the World of Darkness tabletop game that created Vampire: The Requiem, don't worry; this World of Darkness is based on the rules of Masquerade, not Requiem.
  • The game will take place in real world locations, but don't expect to visit your house. Cities are, as said by Reynir, “kind of boring.” So while the places are real, they've been stylized and re-designed to evoke more of the dark atmosphere the development team wants to focus on. So maybe things will be more claustrophobic, darker, and contain a few more goth-techno-rave nightclubs. You know, that sort of thing. Who knows at this point, really?
  • There will be a political system. Similar to the Live Action Roleplaying (LARP) version of Vampire, cities will be controlled by princes and other figureheads of power. How people earn these positions and what they can do with the throne remains to be seen, but control can fluctuate between individuals or even clans. Expect a lot more social interaction in this game than EVE or DUST; plotting, scheming, double-dealing, etc.
  • Since the game will only focus on vampires in the beginning – sorry World of Darkness fans who roll werewolf or mage – the currency traded amongst clans and individuals will be blood. After all, that's way more valuable to the blood-sucking undead than money. When other races are introduced later down the road, McDonough assured they wouldn't be fighting over the same resources.
  • Finally, there are heavy consequences for failure in World of Darkness. Yes, without proper care for your character and precautions taken, you can permanently die and be forced to start over from stage one. Harsh! I like it.

I personally liked the Gangrel when I played Vampire, but found werewolves infinitely more exciting and badass. But each detail about World of Darkness has me excited nonetheless. I'm an MMO junkie, and I haven't had one that scratches that social itch for a long time. If this game can do that while engaging me in some awesome combat and story, I'm sold.

But what about you? Curious about the World of Darkness? Old veteran of the tabletop game? Let us know your thoughts below!
