Behold, BioShock Infinite’s Boys of Silence, the latest, and most disturbing, character yet to be highlighted in Irrational Games’ “Heavy Hitters” reveal series. This supremely creepy foe sports one of the most bizarre yet fascinating character designs in recent memory, what with its metal tube ears, bolted and locked leather neck, and oddly foppish blue suit.
The Boys of Silence design is so striking in fact that it’s hardly a surprise that when BioShock Infinite creative director Ken Levine saw the first concept art for the character, he instantly connected with it.
“Rarely this happens when I see a concept I’m like, 'Oh my god! We have to do that!'" says Levine.
More details after the break.
Art director Nate Wells adds that Levine’s reaction was shared by the rest of the team. “We all thought it was like the coolest thing we’d ever seen.”
“Anytime you completely obscure something’s face,” Wells adds, “there’s a creepiness that falls naturally out of wondering what’s going on in there. You know, is it this hideously deformed child? Is there a head at all? You can only assume that it’s horrible to be inside that mask, and I think that’s where a lot of his scare value comes from.”

As lead artist Shawn Robertson explains, the Boys of Silence are actually blind, but, as indicated by their massive ears, they can hear you. “And the levels that you see them in you have to make a decision on whether you’re going to try to sneak around them or engage them directly. But if you anger them, they can call in backup.”
Levine further elaborates on the Boys of Silence’s role in the world of BioShock Infinite, describing them as akin to walking, talking, and hunting versions of the security cameras from the original BioShock.
“I think he’s going to be scary in the game and somebody the players are going to love to meet but also hate to meet,” concludes Levine.
Makes my skin crawl just thinking about it. Still, I can’t wait to see this tube-eared terror in person when BioShock Infinite releases October 16.
In case you missed them, be sure to check out the Motorized Patriot and Handyman reveals for even more Infinite goodness.
And also be sure to tune into X-Play on March 26 at 6:30pm ET for the fourth and final character reveal video.

I'll be honest here. I am not really impressed by the villains in this game. Don't get me wrong here I do plan on playing this game because of my love for Bioshock, but these characters look weird.

I think the ingame version should look more ragged and neglected. I dont know why they decided to have him wear a perfect shiney suit...

Reminds me of some of the monsters in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

I'd say it looks cooler in the concept art when compared to the in game screen shot. It just looks way oversized on the guy in game, compared to the concept art where it seems to fit better.

I just saw this video on X Play about15 minutes ago. The Boys of Silence look like they'll be tough enemies to try to sneak past and they look very creepy. I can't wait to get Bioshock Infinite when it comes out.
