Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Guide; A Simple Strategy To Survive

The ending of Mass Effect 3 continues to spark internet debate. Earlier this week, we let you know of the petition drive to change the ending of ME3. Today, BioWare community manager Chris Priestly has made a post on Mass Effect 3's message board letting gamers know that the company is listening to the critics.

He posts:

We appreciate everyone’s feedback about Mass Effect 3 and want you to know that we are listening. Active discussions about the ending are more than welcome here, and the team will be reviewing it for feedback and responding when we can. Please note, we want to give people time to experience the game so while we can’t get into specifics right now, we will be able to address some of your questions once more people have had time to complete the game. In the meantime, we’d like to ask that you keep the non-spoiler areas of our forums and our social media channels spoiler free.

Is this the set-up for a later announcment of a change to the ending of Mass Effect 3? I stand by my assement that it's perfectly fine to dislike the ending of Mass Effect 3. It's fine to comment on how much you hate it. It's fine to tell your friends not to play it because of the ending. But expecting Bioware to write a different ending so that you can be more satisfied shows a weird level of entitlement and a lack of understanding of how art works.

But hey, maybe you feel differently. Feel free to let me know in our comment section below.

Mass Effect is not art, it is a product. As a consumer I have every right to ask for what I was told I was getting when I purchased it. Namely, endings affected by my choices, not a single ending with a few minor differences.

I thought the ending was fine, the world isn't perfect and it usually doesn't turn out the way you want. C'mon Shep saved the galaxy and ended the cycle, what more is there.....

The damage is severe, and is getting worse by the day, a resolution needs to happen. This is the companies future on the line.

I would think Bioware would appreciate the request to make a new ending. Save the consumers and get more money in future. Or stick to there ending ignore consumers, and lose the consumers and in the long run lose future business and money.

"But expecting Bioware to write a different ending so that you can be more satisfied shows a weird level of entitlement and a lack of understanding of how art works. "

I disagree. Art isn't about the creative expression of the artist, it's about using that creative expression to forge a relationship with the audience. Art is supposed to be experienced through the filter of individual experience. That's why there's no lengthy post along side the Mona Lisa stating "Well, I wanted her to have a larger smile, but her cheeks got tired, and then it was kind of hot, so she ended up with this little smirk instead." It's up to us to look at her and decide just what was going through her mind at that moment. It's up to us to decide whether Romeo and Juliet is a tragic story about a transcendent love, or a cautionary tale about two stupid kids that should have listened to their parents.

Plus, we've never had this opportunity before, to turn art from a static experience set in stone into one that can evolve based on the audience's participation. Video games are so unique in the entirety of human existence that I don't think you can apply classical definitions to them. Especially a game like Mass Effect. Because of the way it was written, the audience is no longer a passive observer. We are now active participants. The story molds and shapes itself to our decisions. In a very real sense, we are as much artist as we are audience. Each of us crafts our own unique version of the story by the choices we make. As such, as the person telling the story, we absolutely should be able to tell Bioware that the story's ending doesn't feel respectful of the rest of the story.

I'm not saying that we should be able to dictate a script for them to follow. But the concerns many of us have are valid concerns, thoughtfully laid out with supporting evidence and well reasoned arguments on why we feel it needs changed. At that point, as the primary artist, Bioware should be free to craft a new story, one which takes the criticisms into account, but that is still their unique vision.

Also, as much as we want to extol the purity of the artistic expression, the fact is that this is a commercial product as well. In fact, art has often been a commercial product. Many of the masterpieces of art that we know were created specifically for someone else, and with a set of instructions. The Sistine Chapel was painted by Michelangelo not because he felt like it, but because Pope Julius II forced him to. He wasn't really a painter, he was a sculptor, but the pope made him do it, and because of that, we have a seminal work of art, a true masterpiece.

As a paying customer, I have the right to go back to the company, express my displeasure at their product, and expect them to do something to make it right. I agree that they shouldn't try to give us exactly what we've pictured for the ending. Otherwise, we'll end up with a few million endings sometime in the next century. And most of them will be a cross between bad fan-fic, worse fan-fic, and what you'd see on an adult pay-per-view channel. But I think that most of us are smart enough to realize that, and to be satisfied if we get an ending that takes all our previous choices into account, provides a significant distinction between all the available outcomes, and provides at least some possibility for success.

The last might be a controversial statement that sounds like "entitled whining for a rainbow and puppies ending". And maybe it is. But there's enough bleakness in the world as it is. Frankly, I play games to escape that. if I wanted an existential lesson on the futility of life, the insignificance of the individual, and the illusion of free will, I'll go watch a political debate. This series has always been about hope. That one person can succeed despite overwhelming odds, and make the galaxy a better place. I'd like an ending that reflects that.

They want us to wait to let the storm blow over. Consumers should do this on opening weekend of their mass effect movie. Wait a month make sure ending gets good reviews. Maybe wait a month on comicbooks, figures, and anime movie. Hey bioware we can resolve this later then we will contribute to your other pursuits. They want to wait till others finish the game. The polls show 86% hate it. And 12% feel it lacks content. Only 3% like it. Why not do ending now instead of subjecting more consumers to what you already know is bad. How do people playing the game now not finished feel about Bioware letting you continue into this horrible 97% hated ending, they dont care about your experience it seems. It has become so ugly I am tempted to find something else maybe the Witcher 2 I hear that one does have a good story.

I don't believe the ending was that bad. Fans might have been just nitpicking at plot holes because they were upset. That first run through the game from beginning to end was awesome. I loved it. There was surprisingly a lot of emotion throughout the game; leaving earth, the end of both the Tuchanka and Thessia missions got to me, as well as finally getting some much needed revenge against a certain character.

Sessler explains it so well. With this last game it was about the legacy of Shepard and how the choices you made in the previous two games affected this one. The ending was exactly how Bioware wanted it to end. I would have loved to see more and the resulting fates of numerous people throughout that galaxy but its their baby and that's their choice.

Now that being said video games should be thought of differently than other forms of art. They are unique in that they can be changed for all consumers of it very easily. MMO's are the best example for what I'm talking about. Many aspects of an MMO are changed through player feedback and regular patches and updates, and not just bugs but cosmetic changes as well.

Personally I would have rather they just give me one ending. If you haven't beaten the game yet I would ask that once you do go to youtube and look at the other endings. You will immediately see what the heart of the problem is and will be right on board with it needing to be seriously addressed by Bioware. I'm actually amazed that variations on the ending got green lit through production.

On another not I think Bioware might be thinking about a change because it could hurt their other franchises. Of course it probably would't hurt it noticeably. But if they are looking for every nickel and dime, which of course they are just look at day one DLC, they have to take it seriously and reassess. Didn't they say they were going to do something similar with Dragon Age? I'm not sure on that. After this though I will definitely will not be pre-ordering future titles from them. I'll wait for reviews and general reaction after releases dates.

Why do I get the feeling DLC will hit an all time high of $20 for a new ending.

I don't know. I think that the community driving to get Bioware to change their ending kind of fits in with the whole idea of the player shaping the ME universe.

With a lot of the posts, the person seems to understand that the "alternate ending" dlc wouldn't be free and a few are saying "charge me for it". I haven't finished the game so I have no say in it but just on the basis of making more money on the ME brand I don't see why they wouldn't add new endings.

I have to disagree with your stance on the complainers having a "weird level of entitlement and a lack of understanding of how art works." While I will agree that video games are art (much like movies, books and what not), they are also software. If a software company puts out a program in which the end result is undesirable, then that company is expected to fix it. This is especially true for when the user pays more than 100 dollars for the product or line of related products.

I understand that there is a major disconnect between Video games and other programs but with how popular DLC has become I don't see anything wrong with gamers asking for an alternative ending.

Anyways that's my two cents. Back to crossing my fingers hoping that Shepard goes out in a blaze of glory in order to kill the reapers (oh and that Joker and Edi get together).

I am going to review the game without the ending here: The game is just awesome. With several epic moments in the game I was wanting more and more everytime i had to leave for work. The beginning started off very well then there were at least 3 more epic moments before the ending. The final battle was not bad either. I had only 1 glitch the entire game and died from it but it wasn't a game breaker since we should all expect 1 glitch or another in any game. I got the day 1 DLC for free because I got the collectors edition but I do not understand why not everybody was getting it for free because I actually liked that From Ashes DLC. Great game that could easily be 9.5/10 if not for the ending. 7/10 with this ending.

the charity is actually a great idea as compared to online petitions. I feel you would get a better response.

Hope Bioware makes the announcement soon so all this can end. Now I'm going to go make a few calibrations.

Two great articles on the so called "entitlement" argument: "Upset Mass Effect Fans: Entitled Gamers Or Responsible Consumers?" http://www.forbes.com/sites/er ikkain/2012/03/15/upset-mass-e ffect-fans-entitled-gamers-or- responsible-consumers/

The Pernicious Myth of Gamer Entitlement: http://www.forbes.com/sites/er ikkain/2012/03/13/mass-effect- 3-and-the-pernicious-myth-of-g amer-entitlement/

Games bring a whole new level of argument over the creative process. There's plenty of precedent for creators changing content, all the way back to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Should it be the norm? No, but in cases like this, it would be flat-out stupid for Bioware NOT to address the backlash and try to make it right. They could come out of this looking wonderful, or minus a whole lot of fans.

I think its getting pretty clear that more and more gamers are upset with the ending of the game, mostly because the quality of the ending is just poor compared to the rest of the game, and the a,b,c aspect of the ending, which really only gives 1 ending with small variants was a dissappoitment.

At least fans have raised over $54,000 for charity already in protest.. So no matter what, the Childs play charity has been helped.
