Neo Geo X Portable Confirmed, Planned For 2012 Release

SNK has confirmed that the portable Neo Geo X is officially a thing, with plans to release the device at some point in 2012. The original hardware maker will work with Blaze on building and mass-producing the device, according to Eurogamer. The Neo Geo X reportedly features a 3.5-inch LCD screen, A/V output, internal speakers and an SD card slot. It will also come packing 20 pre-loaded games.

Blaze tells Eurogamer that a previously reported price of £500 for the portable device is incorrect. It's not clear yet just how much the Neo Geo X will cost, but Blaze promises that an announcement is coming soon.

You can probably expect the final price tag to fall quite a bit lower than £500; that's more than the price of an iPad for crying out loud! Sure, the original Neo Geo was monstrously overpriced ($650!) when it launched in 1990, but the market's become just a BIT more competitive since then.

Below you'll find the full list of pre-loaded games, as reported by Eurogamer. You can also head over to www.neogeox.com to sign up for e-mail updates as more is revealed about the Neo Geo X.

You people are to dense to see the bigger picture... think if how usefull this will be once the homebrew community gets a hold of it. It will be an emulator from the Gods. Portable SNES/Genisis I say yes yes. Dont get me wrong emulators are technicly stealing. But not if im emulating games I have physical copies of. In the long run this thing will be a god send. Welcome back SNK! people these days dont respect you which is sad...

    One more comment-
As much as I do love Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown, and a number of other great classics, I feel this is nostalgia getting in the way of the reality of business. If they had started releasing quality titles again, and had more than 20 newer hits that could be made into exclusive franchises, I could see a console idea as feasible, but this is a bad idea. Has SNK not learned anything from past console debacles?

Did the guy who decided the pricing on the NeoGeo come up with this? At what point is this even a viable product in the ultra competitive world of gaming we live in today? Most of the best NeoGeo titles are available on other platforms that do much more than just play NeoGeo games, and if they are not doing well enough with the software available as is, then how do they expect to sell a game system (handheld or otherwise)?

I love some of the old NeoGeo titles, but they would fit just as well on the DS, Vita, or Wii U, and they will be no doubt backing their systems with quality online infrastructures that will not be going away 5 months later when this fails, and more than capable than handling old 16bit titles, with filters to clean up the low res sprites.

SNK needs to stick to software (and I don't mean with titles like Samurai Showdown 3d... ugh...).

Unlikely a joke, many other sites reported about this before G4 even put this article up

Why don't you just get the Neo Geo greatest hits for the PSP? That way you won't get a portable that only plays SNK games.

with the level of processing power and transitors out there, they should be packing ps1 era games onto the system, I know they had to have atleast made one back then.

This is obviously an april fool's joke

clearly its a building april fools joke.... King of the fighters '94, Metal slug?

When was the last time you seen a metal slug game?

Side scrollers are not that popular anymore and even that one was kind of obscure only known to people who actually went to arcades.

Why spend 500$ for something you could probably make yourself for way cheaper or just get a emulator.

woulnd't they have a better chance of succes by releasing games on other popular portable systems? Even xbox live, psn, and ninty network is a better idea.

Neo Geo still doesn't get it. Why would any one care about another portable device in their pockets?
