Mass Effect 3

Some Mass Effect 3 fans have been up in arms over the way the March 6, 2012 release's story concluded, and BioWare's Casey Hudson, director and executive producer on the game, has responded. Be aware before reading on: there are no specific spoilers, but there are some light hints in Hudson's comments. You have been warned.

Hudson makes no apologies for the way Commander Shepard's story turned out in his interview with Digital Trends. "I didn’t want the game to be forgettable, and even right down to the sort of polarizing reaction that the ends have had with people–debating what the endings mean and what’s going to happen next, and what situation are the characters left in," he explained.

"That to me is part of what’s exciting about this story. There has always been a little bit of mystery there and a little bit of interpretation, and it’s a story that people can talk about after the fact."

Be sure to check out the rest of the interview, which includes some talk on how BioWare processes fan feedback and an address of the day one DLC concerns. You can also hear more about the ongoing Mass Effect 3 conversation from our very own Adam Sessler in the latest Sessler's Soapbox.

    Game Informer Question

With the ending in Mass Effect 2, there were so many different variables and possibilities for the outcome and what could happen. As players reached the end, they started comparing notes and trying to figure out how it worked. A few months after it came out, we ran a chart in the magazine that showed the layout of how to get the different endings and how things happened. Is that same type of complexity built into the ending of Mass Effect 3?

    Casey Hudson Answer

"Yeah, and I d say much more so, because we have the ability to build the endings out in a way that we don t have to worry about eventually tying them back together somewhere. This story arc is coming to an end with this game. That means the endings can be a lot more different. At this point we re taking into account so many decisions that you ve made as a player and reflecting a lot of that stuff. It s not even in any way like the traditional game endings, where you can say how many endings there are or whether you got ending A, B, or C.

It s more like there are some really obvious things that are different and then lots and lots of smaller things, lots of things about who lives and who dies, civilizations that rose and fell, all the way down to individual characters. That becomes the state of where you left your galaxy. The endings have a lot more sophistication and variety in them. It would be interesting to see if somebody could put together a chart for that. Even with Mass Effect 2 s..."

    My Opinion

This interview was done before the game released and can be found on GI's website. If this does not make you rethink the so called crappy ending, then you can remain to be unhappy, but please don't ruin it for everyone else.

Everyone's opinion matters, but take a step back and consider how many variables their have been in the three games.

The problem i have with the ending is not how it ends, it how the ends were executed.
    --SPOILER ALERT--
All the ends, well, with the crew getting stranded in the middle of (-insert name here-). It left a lot of plots whole like:
    1. How are the other races going back to their home planets? (With the relays destroyed it will make the other races take a long journey back to their homeworlds and colonies.
2.Where was Joker going anyway? Why was he escaping through the relay to begin with?
3.How did your squadmates survive the blast from Harbinger, plus they were nowhere to be found.?
4.Why were the cutscenes like a copy/paste of the same scene just with different colors?
    5. Why couldn't their be like a memorial service or a celebration scene of all the races after they have had their victory?(Or defeat if u take too long).
6.You are told of the consequences of your choice, but you are never shown the entirety of it. Why? Did they not have the time or money to actually make full-fledged endings, or were they just lazy?

I really hope that these indoctrination theories are correct, cause this could mean the ultimate plot-twist for the series, then i can redeem them.

I really hope they can redeem these endings by having them be changed after a few DLC.( Either Downloadable content, or Disc-locked content)

Remember, its not that i hate the endings, it the very execution that bothers me.

Though I have not beaten the game yet, I am now even more curious to see how the ends. I just hope they did not make the ending like it is just for the sake of it. No matter how much people complain about it, the truth is that people wanted it to end in a way that fits there vision of the game and not everyone shares the same vision. I suppose people should ask themselves if the ending they want fits the narrative of what has come before in the franchise. You just cant expect to introduce anything into the story and expect it to fit and make sense in that story. If this is BioWare's vision for the end since the inception of Mass Effect 3, I don't see how you can change the ending without it effecting the overall tone and narrative of the entire game.

I can't believe people are so up in arms about the ending. I thought the ending brought a very satisfying end to the story. I think they stayed true to the idea that there would have to be great sacrifice to defeat the reapers. It is also one of the first real times out of games that I have played that has a plan go wrong. I feel that Mass Effect 3 is the best out of the trilogy, as far as game play and story.

    *Spoilers*

I'm coming around on the ending, because I see the Indoctrination theory as being most likely true. Even still then, that assumes a cliffhanger ending. People who are clamoring for ending DLC though.....weren't you the same people complaining about the "From Ashes" Day 1 DLC and calling it "integral" even though it wasn't? If they actually cut out the ending and planned to sell that as DLC, wouldn't that be more of a travesty then "Hey, buy this add on character?"

Honestly i feel Bioware should have left taking back earth and the finale for another game of its own..There is just to much to cover in one game and what should have been a massive fireworks type finale ended up being a small fiecracker that was half wet.

"Some fans", no it is the overwelming majority of the fans. By the way Hudson talked in the entire interview it is hard to tell if there will be any DLC that changes or explains the endings. Here is hopeing for a Fallout New Vegas style epilogue. I also never thought that mystery and interpretation were a big part of Mass Effect.

There is no polarizing effect, the ending is UNIVERSALLY HATED!! Those who claim to like are so few it breaks down to people not wanting to agree with the masses. How could anyone play all three games and honestly not feel robbed? All of the galaxy uniting and assest gathering mean nothing in a final battle where none of it is shown. Where are the asari, drell, elcore, krogan, volu s bombers ,geth primes, biotic units, fighter units,spectres,rachni,n7 multiplayer ops,and all the weaponry Shepard gathered when he finally takes back earth. All this and more is missing from our finale, how could anyone be satisfied with an ending that felt so empty?

Then what's done is done. For those of us that want retribution, we should just let it go. Any kind of compromise BioWare could give us won't really remove the sour taste we've experienced.

The series itself was memorable, and had already secured that place is gaming culture. Perhaps my judgment is not sound and clouded by my own emotions on the matter, but this response tells me Mr. Hudson was more concerned with securing his own career's legacy than creating a memorable ending, in the positive sense. This game series will now always be infamous and any Mass Effect article will always have "controversy" included in the writing.

BioWare, whether you extend the main story or not with your DLC, please get back to your goal of providing a unique, diverse experiences as you had been supplying throughout the series prior to the conclusion. Those experiences give each player their own memorable experience that they want to share with other gamers out of curiosity of how their story unfolded differently. You don't need to take notes from the Matrix, ergo the god child thing. Making your games infamous is going to hurt your IPs and your reputation.

Didn't see a problem with the ending personally. I'm glad they are sticking by the ending that they decided and had a vision for.
