(This post contains Minor Mass Effect 3 Spoilers)
Mass Effect 3 hasn't even been on shelves for a full week, and there's already a movement growing to change the ending of the game. Disgruntled ME3 players have created a "Change the ending of Mass Effect 3 twitter feed," a facebook page to "Demand a better ending to Mass Effect 3" and flooded polls on Bioware's forums. There's even a petition to change the ending of the Mass Effect 3.
Apparently, the ending of the game is a bit too dark for some gamers, and they'd prefer a more upbeat ending, as well as an ending where Commander Shepard's in-game actions have more bearing on how the game finishes.
Here's how the Facebook page describes the issue:
"Mass Effect 3 is a great game until the last few minutes; they destroy everything fans have been playing for in the past 5 years."
The Facebook page alone now has over 13,000 "likes," and phase two, a letter-writing campaign, is planned.
I haven't finished ME3 yet, so I don't personally know how well the ending works, but I hope that BioWare doesn't decide to change the ending of the game based on the complaints of gamers: That's not how art works. The audience doesn't get to pick the ending. If you like a certain kind of game ending, you can make your own game and end it any way you choose. I have faith that the great writers and producers at BioWare are better at deciding how their franchise will end than the people who play it -- they've earned that kind of loyalty and respect through years of making impressive, story-driven games.
But that's just my opinion. What do you guys think? How do you feel about the ending of Mass Effect 3? Do you think it should be changed?

Everyone who is mad at the {[(ONE)]} ending. Emphasis on the ONE, are angry neck beards who still live with there parents. I my self have not beat the game and I already know that there are multiple endings. Those who claim to be fans of the series and are complaining about the ONE endings. Once again emphasis on the ONE, are not fans of Bioware. Mass Effect 3 is the conclusion to Commander Shepard's story not the Mass Effect universe. Do some research before you complain about something. You guys are making yourselves look like idiots.

I read lots of complaints and still don't get it. Was it really too dark? You think a game about planet-wide genocide should end with a rainbow? What does it mean to "affect the ending" of a game that is over? Fable did a very similar thing with their ending, and it worked because it followed logically with what that game focused on. People who dislike it: I'd love to hear of a game ending that you really loved, because almost every one of them suck. At least this one gave the gamer closure and, more or less, resulted from themes discussed throughout the three games. They ended it with answers and a logic based in science fiction (unlike Lost, for example). I think the backlash here is very difficult to analyze, but it stems from a psychological reaction rather than a logical one. Shepard was literally MADE to defeat the Reapers; without them he has no purpose. And once again, you DID affect the ending, you just didn't get a bunch of crappy epilogue clogging up your great story. What did you want to hear exactly? You could always write fan fiction instead of yell at the developers. And what a way to congratulate the folks at Bioware for making a risky RPGish space-opera without any previous backstory and working diligently for 5 years on an impossible feat. I'm sure if the Groundlings had forums and blogs in Elizabethan England, Shakespeare would have saved Hamlet and let him and Ophelia live happily ever after. Honestly it comes from getting spoon-fed messages by sub-par entertainment all these years. Don't take that personally, anybody.
I'm no apologist; that day-1 DLC BS is damned irredeemable evil if you ask me. Let's tar and feather them for that greedy business instead of an artistic risk.

Artist dont always get final say on the art they create. Read below.
Let me pose the issue of it being art and therefore only the artist gets any say like this: If I commission a painting that takes several years to complete, the artist holds a consistant direct with the painting that I like and then when it comes time to paint my face he does a poorly done, silly job that doesnt fit the rest of the painting, I do have the right to say change it. Just a way of viewing it. I can handle dark endings. What I cant handle is poor workmanship on something I paid for and was promised to be something it wasnt (aka my choices matter).
Respectfully,
Daniel Keating

Ok. I think that the ending was great. But the only part i didn't like and hope they will change is that the Mass Relays don't get destroyed. Cuz now all of the aliens that survived the war is now trapped on one solar system. I hope they change that. Hey in 15 and im a big Mass Effect fan. So I know how the other people feels. Even my dad wants it changed.

Mass Effect 3 ending is very disappointing, mostly because the game is all about how your decisions and actions effect the universe. The ending doesn't play true to it, and seriously lacks the feeling that you did something in the universe, especially since all the endings have the exact same consequences no matter what you do. In a game all about decisions that change the way the game world plays, that is the most bs ending ever.
ZeroKyon
Jesus, you may not like like the endings but what? You guys want them to recall the game and then sell the game a second time? You people need to accept the ending for what it is. Either that or ask Bioware for a DLC.

The old man and the the kid were actually talking about golf on the moon. aaaahhh

So, I rarely drop my 2-cents into these discussions, but for this one I feel the need to. I also ask that you take time to read this all the way through before judging it.
(There may also be some SPOILERS thrown in there if I'm not paying attention, so just a heads up)
I have loved Mass Effect since it first came out, and have been a loyal fan of BioWare's ever since I played KotOR when I was 11. So much so that I can even accredit them as one of my main motivators to coming to college and studying to become a Game Dev. Now with that being said, I am in the same boat as most of you, feeling near repulsed by that ending we were presented and shocked that BioWare would feed it to us. We have to realize though that we cannot, and should not, ask for a new ending. After reflecting on it, I even agree with most of it. There is no way after all of this that Shepard could truly ever be at peace, and this not only accomplished that, but also immortalized him in the minds of the citizens of the universe. It truly was an epic ending to one of the most epic gaming trilogies ever. The only part of the ending I truly do not agree with, is that no matter what, the Mass Relays are destroyed, essentially destroying the Galactic Civilization which we worked so hard to save.
We need to sit back and thank BioWare for 100+ hours of sheer awesomeness in every way, shape and form, and stop demonizing them because they took a chance. It's what designers do and it is how games are improved upon. They gave us the ending they thought was most appropriate, just as any writer does with a book or movie script. It would just feel wrong to have a whole new ending to the game that was already presented to us, just as it would feel wrong to have a new ending come out to a movie that has already been released.
Now just as I said we shouldn't be asking for a new ending, that still doesn't mean we shouldn't press on and ask, "Well what exactly happened?". What we need to be asking for is closure. That is what is owed to us. As many people have stated, it takes into account literally zero of the choices you made throughout the entirety of the series. I could have played the game 100% Paragon and you could have played it 100% Renegade, and we would have been left with the same exact results. With the 3 choices the player is given in the end, there is only a slight difference in one of them, where organic and synthetic life has been merged, and as a result you can see circuitry in the leaves and under Joker's skin. A classmate of mine took the Dalatrass' offer to interfere with the genophage cure, but I didn't. So what does that mean? Did my Krogan led by Eve and Wrex rebuild their civilization successfully? Or was I wrong to trust them and another rebellion broke out? These questions are why we, the fans, are so up in arms over this ending.
The design team at BioWare simply needs to show their dedication to the series by sticking by what they have created, but at the same time, they need show their dedication to the fans by explaining to us why they chose to go this route. If you can give me this explanation and closure into what impact I have truly had upon this galaxy which I worked so hard to save, then I can be at piece and happily wait to see what the next epic BioWare masterpiece will be.
Now if you made it this far, I must thank you for taking the time to indulge me and only hope you agree with me or at the very least, see my point of reasoning.
P.S. BioWare has specifically said this is the end to Shepard's story, which doesn't necessarily mean this is the last we will see of the Mass Effect universe. We can only hope that we will see a Mass Effect 4 pop-up somewhere down the road, and maybe, just maybe, it will hold the answers we are all looking for.
ThorGod10
it was a half ass ending

It would be awesome if someone actually listened to why some of us have issues instead of dismissing the claims. I want to know what happened to everyone. Seriously- that's all. I can accept funny colored beams and sub-par explanations if an epilogue were to suddenly appear. If you end a trilogy- you give closure. That's the deal. If not- why should I give a rat's a** about them in the first place?

The reason why I hated the ending was simply because they left SO many holes for a game that was supposed to be the end of a trilogy. Now it does seem like they will come out with DLC for the remaining part of the story but they sure could be in some trouble if they do not put out any official word.

"I haven't finished ME3 yet"
Then you're not qualified to speak on this matter. At all.
I would have said EXACTLY the same thing you just said before I saw the ending. Then everything changed.

I have to disagree. I do not believe there is any room for loyalty/respect in business. You can call it art if you want, but if you're going to charge people to experience that art then you should also be prepared to handle a few disgruntled consumers accordingly. I haven't beaten it yet so I can't say one way or the other and I'm not saying bioware doesn't deserve respect, just that it's not inherent. They already gave you their money, they're not obligated to supply respect and loyalty as well.

Let me sum it up for all of you crazy kids that are saying blah blah blah ending shouldn't be what the fans want....Uh I'm sorry but I didn't spend 150 plus hours through 3 games to not decide how my ending should be to my ME Universe. What would then be the point of making choices that have 0 effect at the end. On a side note how does this make sense, I send the Reapers to purge intelligent life so they do not kill themselves even though I am a synthetic doing the EXACT SAME THING. How the hell can you make sense of that? Also Mr. Johnson I usually like your opinion on this but for you not finish the game and throw that out is just a d!ck move.

I think Bioware needs to respond soon just from a financial perspective. Already prices have dropped for both used and new copies of the game. Also damaging to Bioware are those people who have started their Mass Effect experience with three and are just as equally distraught with the ending. I know a few people who bought the game as a gamble, not having any experience with the franchise, who are now leaving with a bitter taste in their mouth after that ending. The backlash from loyal fans as well as the departure of those just stepping in is going to be hurtful for Bioware and i hope they can remedy this soon for their sake. I understand the your artistic ownership position Stephen, but maybe you should finish the game first before posting something like this to get the full scope of the argument. Hope to hear your opinion on feedback or after you finish the game.

KINDA A SPOILER FOR 2 GAMES
I had the ending of ME3 spoiled for me, so I'll just ask. Why wasn't there this much hate for the end of Red Dead Redemption when John Marston died? Was that game not just as long as this one? and yes I know a lot of people carried their characters across 3 games (I myself did this), but even still aside from that how is the ending of ME3 that different? Like I said I havent made it to the end of ME3, but even if that is in fact how it ends I feel like I'd see it as a heros death.

First of all this blog post is not only premature, it's short sighted ignorant and arrogant. Second, you can't hide behind the thin veil of "art" when discussing videogames and simply go tell readers to make their own. Bioware is where it is with the aid and support of those same fans. If fans hadn't turned out in droves shell out their money for mass effect 1 and mass effect 2 there would be no mass effect three and with the way they dropped the ball with DA2 probably no SWTOR and no Bioware. Gaming is a business and it caters to consumers. No consumers no business plain and simple. The difference is since you obviously can't see it, is that VanGough, Davinci, Rembrandt, and Warhol are all still VanGough, Davinci, Rembrandt and Warhol without their fans. Yes at the times they lived they accepted commissions for work but they didn't color their work, or reduce their work to a consumer product. Bioware is nothing without their fans. Don't believe me, then explain the legions of pay for play mmorpgs.

It's one of the best game endings of all time, just behind Red Dead Redemption and Half Life 2. I can't wait to see what you say about the ending to Assassins Creed 3. The best ending to a trilogy is currently Metal Gear Solid 4. (Big Boss is not Solid Snake.)
Swisspease
For the first time since buying the original Mass Effect I did not want to start a new game immediately. I couldn't wait in Mass Effect 1 and 2 to start again and see how my actions played out Mass Effect 3 left me unsatisfied and not interested in replaying the game with my other Shepards from the previous titles. What happened to Harbinger? He was never seen once during Mass Effect 3. For such a great trilogy and story they blew it in the last 20 minutes. To me there is no replay value and I will be pulling out my copies of Mass Effect 1 and 2 to remember the good old days when your choices meant something.

I am sorry but if you try to petition an ending of something you have not created yourself then you got some nerve telling its creators how they should have done their job. In any form of creating a world such as in writing, movies, and videogames the creators are in charge not the people who watch or play them. That is what they are paid to do. And if the ending is a shock then I have to say they did their job. I prefer an ending that I do not expect than one I can see coming a mile away.
So let Bioware have their dues for creating a great trilogy. They have had this story mapped out for a years and they finally been able to share it with the world. It is the people who wrote the story and all its variations who should dictate how the ending should be, not those playing it. We are just able to play what they wanted us to experience. If you think just because we pay money you have a say in how the game should end, you are wrong.
