Capcom has issued a statement about the on-disc DLC contained in Street Fighter X Tekken. To catch you up on the story: Gamers recently discovered that the Street Fighter X Tekken disc contains 12 additional characters--previously revealed as PlayStation Vita exclusives. This means the characters will definitely be available on PC and consoles. According to Cacpom, you'll be able to play this dozen fighters "shortly after the Vita version launches later this year."
But why are the characters there in the first place? And how can you call the "DLC" when they're not downloaded as much as unlocked? And how long will it be before someone cracks the disc and opens the characters? Capcom issued a response to the first question. It's below the "Read More" tag.
Capcom's official Statement:
"Capcom has confirmed that 12 new fan-favorite characters will be available as Downloadable Content (DLC) on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of Street Fighter X Tekken later this year. The playable characters will make their debut on the PS Vita system when the game is released this fall, with the console and PC versions receiving them as DLC soon after. The character information and files were intentionally included on retail versions of the PS3 and Xbox 360 game to save hard drive space and to ensure for a smooth transition when the DLC is available, allowing players who choose not to purchase the content the ability to play against players that did. More specifics regarding pricing, dates and other additional exciting DLC plans for Street Fighter X Tekken will be shared at a later date. As a reminder, the retail version of the game will be the only disc-based version consumers will need to own and all future upgrades will come from post-launch DLC. The new characters fighting their way onto Street Fighter X Tekken are... from the Street Fighter side... Blanka, Cody, Dudley, Elena, Guy and Sakura will be playable and from Tekken... Alisa Bosconovitch, Bryan Fury, Christie Monteiro, Jack, Lars Alexandersson and Lei Wulong will all be available."
Hmmm... this is an interesting situation, eh, gamers? How do you guys feel about "DLC" being included on discs, which you later have to pay to unlock? Does the fact that 12 morce characters will be added to the game make you more excited to buy Street Fighter X Tekken? Or does the DLC being on the disc make you less likely to buy it?

For many years I have read forums with Street Fighter fans complaining about something CAPCOM did. bashing the creators. And yet their thumbs are sore from playing and they anxiously wait for what SF game CAPCOM brings next. It's clear on the back of the case. 43 playable characters (5 exclusive to PS3 System). HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. So that's what you pay for. Whether extra are locked onto the disc or not. The characters they have kept out are all amazing fighters for advanced players.. DLC can be used to see who the community really likes. Gives them ideas on who to keep and leave out of next game.

Only one word for capcom....KEEP ALL OF YOUR GOD DANG DLC! All I want is the characters and extra characters at reasonable prices. And I will debate for more dlc fighters to make up for this dlc catastrophe! UNACCEPTABLE! Just... why?

Here's what I don't get; games like Oblivion and GTA get blasted by the ESRB for content "locked" on a disc that we, the users, can't even access via standard gameplay. Nude character models that never get seen are forcibly patched, or rated mature. Yet this content is still viewed as "owned" by the person purchasing the game, from the powers that be...
Yet, when a company purposefully locks content for the sole purpose of asking us to repurchase a license for content we have already purchased, that's ok to do?
How is this a fair business model? Consumers purchase something like a GTA game with content/assets on the disc, that lead to a "Hot Coffee" mod, and suddenly the producer/developer has to answer to people about this stuff, because the end user has purchased said assets in the EULA, whether they are being "used" or not. But when they do the exact same thing, and then charge people MORE money for a code to "unlock" and "use" this content, that's practically normal now.
This whole BS about "saving HDD space" is a complete load. I refuse to purchase DLC, and I also refuse to purchase games with locked content. I am not whining. I do not feel entitled. I simply refuse to partake in shady business practices with company's that make decisions based solely on their bottom line, and not the fans that keep them running. If enough of us stop buying their product, they'll either adapt, or fade away.

I could equally give a structured justification on why I would download a torrent of the game instead of buying it.

If Its on the disc and I paid for the disc, i paid for the content, its that simple. You want to hold back characters and charge for them later? FINE. You keep them as downloadables, you keep them OFF my disc.
This BS about saving space, you aren't worried about saving space on my Hard Drive, you are worried about saving money. if I choose to download these characters then it is MY responsibility to ensure I have enough space on my hard drive, not yours. If not buying the DLC means i'll be shut out of matches that include those characters then that is MY choice, and I will accept that burden. Its not your choice to make for me. and its not your choice to use MY disc as storage space for your franchise milking scheme because you don't wanna fork over the cash to have the content hosted on MS's/Sony's/etc's servers.

i just wanna know are the ps vita people gonna have to pay for there characters? i highly doubt it. How can they call it DLC, when DLC stands for DOWNLOADABLE content, its pretty much "hey we made a deal with sony, they threw money at us, we gobbled it up so we could promote people to buy there shiny new system. Every other fan of this game can shut up and give us more money for stuff that was available at launch."

Their excuses are a pure load. If it's on the disc, include it in the price. If they want a time delay? Include a timed release no-charge code. While their excuses have some small technical merit, do they really think a gamer is stupid enough to believe this is a justification for charging us more?
Quite frankly, this is no better then (back quite a ways) when Beautiful Katamari released half a game at a budget price and then charged us to unlock the rest of the game via DLC, bumping the game to full retail price. For a more recent example, at least Skylanders (a game guilty of this same sort of gimmick) gave kids a toy for their money that they could take with them to the house of a friend. No, if I buy this game at all, I'll wait until they include a version with a code to unlock these fighters. Otherwise, I have more than enough fighting games to keep me busy.

" allowing players who choose not to purchase the content the ability to play against players that did" I am ok with the way they did this based on that statement

Ive never really understood the concept of DLC anyway. I have never bought any extras and do not think I ever will. I believe that these characters should be available at launch for free like the rest of the characters. However, I can understand DLC if the content was added as an after thought or there wasn't enough time to add content prior to launch.

I'm going to called this EXACTLY what it is...BULLS#*^!!!
Not to mention just plain wrong...I'm seriously hoping that gamers start speaking the (bleep*) up, and stop these companies from screwing us over time & time again. What Arc Systems did with the latest Blaz Blue release comes to mind. (all that money for ONE character...come on?! 0_o)
As much as I love fighting games, and competition...all I will say is...unless someone buys me a copy, this will be the first time you will NOT see me in the checkout line to purchase this game anytime soon.
Seeing Capcom's track record, I think I'll wait for the "Ultimate", or "Super" version with everyone UNLOCKED is released.
In the world of gaming there's four factions:
The Good = (The Gamers)
The Bad = (The Pirates)
& The Ugly = (The Corporate a$*ho!es that screw it's consumers over time & time again!)
Gamers all across the globe, lets stop supporting this crap!
We need to take back control, and tell them what WE want.
Enough of the nonsense. politics, and lies.
ENOUGH!!!

I was initially very annoyed to learn of this. I respect the companies need to make money but it "feels" rotten. And this company has a well known habit of doing things that feel rotten. But as many of you have pointed out, so many of us have supported practices similar to this. I flat out refused to buy Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 but thousands still did. I so wanted Capcom to fall on it's face for that. It only had about one character I wanted anyway.
How many other companies need to do this though? Or claim they NEED to do this. I don't think hardly any other fighter pulls this stuff.
I don't know how they plan to dull out these characters but I'm not interested in most of them anyway. I wonder if this will cause problems for me. What If I want to play against those who have them online? Would I be forced to pay for content I don't want just to be up to date? Sure it's already possible to let me fight against characters I don't have online in some fighters but Capcom could always claim otherwise.

Show me the characters in combat, and I'll see if it's worthy....

I guess it's Capcom's new business strategy. When I read the statement, this is what I got from it, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, it cost money, blah, blah, blah, we doing anything to make money, blah, blah, blah....

It seems like a total rip-off. I'm more of a Soul Caliber kind of guy, so I wouldn't have bought this one anyway. But if I was into this series and on the fence about buying this game, the DLC factor would totally break the deal for me and I wouldn't buy it.
Bethesda by far has the best DLC model. Why can't Bethesda just make all video games?

I really don't know how this is even news. Capcom has always been known for milking the fans. Why not do this fans...Just wait a few months after the release of the game, when they will release a Super or Ultimate version with not only all of the characters, but even cheaper then the original release. They did it with Street Fighter and MVC3, so I really have no idea why anyone would think this would be any different.

I love how their response doesn't try to justify their actions at all.

Thankfully, none of the games I like have ever had a big issue with locked on-disc content. If they did, I'd probably still buy the game, just not the extra content.
I understand their reasons behind including the content (so everyone can see these characters online) but the fact that was made prior to the disc being manufactured is the issue I have with it. To me DLC should be an afterthought, worked on after the game is complete. If it's on the disc, it straddles the line between being additional content or content cut to make a quick buck. With games being $60 and the 2D fighting games being somewhat simplistic when compared to the big blockbuster releases, I feel there should be as much content as possible on that disc.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this processes could also be done with a patch. It only affects people online, so they would all have the ability to download a patch. I believe LittleBigPlanet does this with all its extra costumes. The process seems a lot less shady that way.
Regardless, this will all be water under the bridge when Super Street Fighter x Ultimate Tekken Arcade Edition comes out in 6 months. Capcom has been pretty shady about releasing updates to many of its franchise not long after they hit the market. I haven't played a fighting game for generations, probably since Clayfighter on the 64. Stuff like this doesn't make me regret leaving the genre.

People say that Activision or EA are the worst when it comes to dlc but I honestly think Capcom is by far the worst.
RageQuitGear
Capcom is already admitting to juicing us upfront. Why should we pay upwards of $100 total for this. Way too expensive!
