Next week, Sony will try something a little bit different with one of its most popular first-party titles. The multiplayer portion of Guerilla Games' Killzone 3 will be broken out as a standalone PS Store download, and a free one at that.
The confirmation comes from the latest PlayStation Blogcast (via Eurogamer), with the U.S. release launching on Tuesday, February 28. The download includes all maps, but the free version includes an unspecified level cap. Yes-- there's your catch. You'll have to shell out $14.99 for full access to the multiplayer.
With the full game selling at around $25 new right now, this isn't a bad deal at all. Whatever the level cap may be, the free download is certainly a better taste of the game than you'd get from a proper demo.

I came up with the idea for downloadable standalone multiplayer a while back and did a blog post about the idea back in December. Don't believe me? Here's the link,

I think it's a great idea! Read about it and spread the word on who came up with it.

I like this a lot even though I've already purchased KZ3 day one. However, it's not an RPG or MMO so 'level cap' doesn't seem to matter as much when you think about it. There are no higher level enemies to worry about that make the game impossible to progress or unlocks that drastically change the way the game is played. As long as the person playing makes smart decisions about the perks and weapons they unlock, a lot of people could be getting away with one hell of a fun online multiplayer title for free.
I definitely don't think paying $15 for the multiplayer when the retail price for the whole game is $25 is worth it though...

well i already played it.. traded it in, so when i download this free version.. would i keep my level or would the level cap lock my level? or will it start me from the beginning even tho i already played and already have my saved data on my ps3 and account

"The free version includes an unspecified level cap."
Actually, it was specified to be at Sergeant I. I don't really know how much playtime that is though, could someone tell me?
"Yes-- there's your catch. You'll have to shell out $14.99 for full access to the multiplayer".
Lol well it's not like they'd give it away for free and most free 2 play games have micro transactions or make it EXTREMELY long to level up, in order to make you cave in and buy things.

I already have KZ3, love it, but this is a really good idea buy Sony.

Another ditch effort move by Sony to recoup their many losses that span this entire generation.

Should read...
"Killzone 3 Multiplayer Coming To PS Store Next Week....FREE 2 PLAY"
The title as is means nothing. Read this story on some other site and there's tons of people commenting. Nice work Adam...

I tip my hat to them and would like to see this done more often as i find this to be a great idea, not only for us gamers but as a sales pitch too.

Thank god! KZ3 multiplayer is awesome and it was a shame it didn't sell more but hopefully this will spring life back in the MP.

Yep. Even better deal for the people that skipped out on this title like me. Played KZ2 and loved the online play, so this might very well be worth the money. Lets just see how many people are going to play it.
And as to the "other" game, ya it is always a rip off.

Clever.
So ALL maps and MP for the price of a certain "other" games single map pack release.
I wouldn't mind seeing this done more with other games.
