PS Vita Won't Be Updated To Run PS2/PS3 Games, Sony Confirms

PS Vita

The PlayStation Vita is out next week, on February 22. Yes, technically it's out as of earlier this week, but that's only for people who ordered the First Edition bundle. Next week, everyone can get their piece of the pie. Sony has a new Vita FAQ up on PlayStation Blog to get you prepped, and one of the Qs addressed reveals that "PlayStation does not have plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point."

The reasoning behind this should be fairly obvious, even if Sony never admits it: if games from those platforms are made to simply work with the Vita, how will anyone ever release Vita-tweaked "remakes" for them? Duh, guys. Seriously. PSOne support is coming, though there's nothing to reveal yet on that front. Sony pledges to announce further details "when they are ready."

Stop looking at me like that. I know this is minor news. What do you want? Friday's off to a slow start.

    Time to educate the masses!

The Playstation Vita WILL be able to play Playstation 1,2, and 3 games REMOTELY via remote play!

The Playstation Vita WILL NOT be getting Vita conversions of PS2 and PS3 games unless under the discression of the third party companies.

Example (The original Little Big Planet for ps3 will not be PORTED to Vita, however, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 has already been ported to the vita)

Sony has already said that they already support a few games now, and are continuing to work towards making ALL PS3 games available to PSV Remote Play.

I'm gonna break down a few remarks and show you the error of your ways...

Gripe - "The PSV internet browser doesn't work with flash!"

Reasoning - The PSV Internet browser will support HTML5, which (for those of you not too savvy on the lingo) is what most websites are changing their flash too. HTML5 uses simpler code, and has a better compresion ratio. Adobe flash, though "flashy" is bulky on code and requires framework a majority of high end devices (Namely the iGeneration, yeah Apple and Adobe don't get along) don't, can't, or will not support.

Gripe - "Why did sony have to choose AT&T instead of leaving options open for us to pick our carrier?"

Reasoning - Ok, this one's not the most fun for me to explain, but it's very understandable given circumstance. Sony originally wanted to be open to all carriers, but mostly to both Verizon and AT&T. Unfortunately Verizon "screwed the pooch" when releasing Sony's Xperia Play (I know, I have one)

Verizon Purposefully limited certain stock abilities on the Xperia Play AND loaded it down with it's own custom firmware port congested with bloatware (bloatware is all that default software you prolly never use and CANNOT DELETE!) The reason for the limitation is obviously clear, it was a push to third party game developers to make their games available via verizons app store instead of letting sony claim it's share of profits from leading game developers like EA. On AT&T, you can the xperia play store to purchase dead space, on verizon, you can only lay claim to it through verizon's app store, which, if your phone gets formatted, means you cannot re-download that game, you HAVE to BUY it AGAIN!

Did Verizon stop there? NO! They also took off the Xperia Play's own emulator for ps1 games and removed the ability to search for ps1 games via the android market. They ALSO stopped supporting the device shortly after it's immediate FAIL on their market so newer firmware that was meant to address a few features andd core errors never got their silken gloved touch up and release...oh yeah, I rooted mine, I rooted it hard! LOL!

AT&T doesn't have the best coverage area, yes we know that. AT&T does have some outlandish prices (it's right at the top for most expensive provider). But that pales in comparison to the positives they offer.

AT&T offers developer freedom for devices, meaning what the developer of the original device wants on their device, goes on the device. AT&T sweetened the pot by giving Vita players FREE access to their Hotspots (which are quite a lot by the way since AT&T is very friendly with offering services to restaurants "um, starbucks, gametstops, malls, get the picture?") Though AT&T doesn't have UNLIMITED bandwith available, the $30/3GB per month price tag is actually not bad considering other providers are charging up to $50 for only 2GB per month. AT&T is also NOT requiring a contract, possibly because they want their consumers to have the freedom to choose when and if they want to continue service.

Basically, if you honestly feel it's too much, take the hit like employees that go on strike and refuse to pay for the service, If a good percentage of Vita owners don't buy into it, AT&T will rethink it pricing in hopes of making a profit on it's exclusitivity. Some of you may understand what being an exclusive provider really costs a company.

ok, so a lot of you have been watching videos of "unboxings" and such and heard a lot of complaints about the Vita thus far. It was a month earlier that you're seeing (japanese models released mid january). Sony has always catered to their UK and US labels so just BE PATIENT. A majority of the features you are looking for will prolly be in working order VERY SOON after you get your Vita via a fw update. Honestly you should know by now Sony is infamous for giving us next gen hardware now, and the software takes a couple months to catch up, then the software expands beyond our imaginations and out performs other consoles on the market continuously. Look at the current battle between PS3 and XBOX 360.

Xbox 360 - We have Cute lil Avis
    PS3 - We have HOME!
Xbox 360 - Well we have party chat (that crashes...often)
    PS3 - We have HOME!
Xbox 360 - Um, we have... Xbox Live? ($60/year)
PS3 - Playstation Plus (free online gaming no matter what and Playstation Plus members receive 20x + (in free games and such) what they pay out which is... oh wait! $60 per year!

you ppl need to relax. (yea you erob90)

G4 arent the ones making these choices about the psV u morons their simply reporting it. so take ur fanboy bull and save for an outlet that cares about your single person opinion do u own stock in sony? are an employee at SCEA.? are u sucking on someones jock at sony on the side for free games? then can it bro. hiding behind a fake name on g4tv.com so u can bitch is pathetic.

now on to the story. my only gripe WITH SONY is that they know their psv console can do this and do it very well. the fact that again as always they let their pride and old school way of doing things cloud their judgement and make themselves out to seem like money hungry evil execs. we know they need to make money we get that. but in the way they do it is a slap in the face to the very ppl that pay their wages. having seen many many many videos that showcase the vita using remote play to play titles like Batman AA and battlefield 3 and even infamous2 is obvious that they know ppl want this feature. example. i own both the 360 and a ps3. if i have a choice to lets say purchase a copy of Prototype 2 for either console..... if my vita can play said game using remote play then my choise is obvious. i will buy it for the ps3 for the fact i know that if im at work or just somewhere that has wifi i can turn on remote play and keep playing that same game any & everywhere. they have this huge marketing push for play everywhere and never stop gaming.... yet they have a chance to really make themselves stand out by supporting this new feature over other game consoles. another example is i own a windows phone also. if i could play a 360 game using some kinda remote play app on my phone there would be no question which platform id be more likely to spend my money on. that fact that now in order to use this very cool feature users are left with no choice but to hack and use non official sony firmware on their ps3 to make this work is insane due to that is the very thing sony has been fighting to stop. if you dont want ppl to do this then why limit what you allow them to do. its like a uber religious family trying to tell their rebellions teenage daughter to stop dating said badboy. the more you tell someone what they cant do the more they will want to and find a way to do it anyway.

Wow a negative article about Sony, I must be at g4tv.com... pfffff

BTW, one of the earliest features of the PSVita is connectivity and cross platform gaming with PS3, there's even ads that show that with games like MLB, so this article is plainly wrong...

But what is more serious is the quality of trash these people at G4 talk about anything related to Sony and the beloved Playstation brand, you guys are really s!ck and I hope that at least you are getting good money for it... top job, pitiful losers.

I was getting excited when I heard about the cross platform play but for a different reason. I play xbox online so I wouldn't care about the online factor. What I'm really interested in is weather or not I can play any ps3 game via the vita. I'd love to be able to pop in skyrim on ps3 and play it on my vita. That way my wife can watch teen mom all she wants and I can be free to play when I want without getting griped at! LOL!

Wait, aren't PS3 games supposed to be compatible with cross platform play on the Vita? what would be the point of that being one of the features of the Vita otherwise? as long as Cross Platform Play's compatibility is with more and more PS3 games that's all I care about.. not downloading a whole PS3 game to the Vita

I do not understand why there is so much ignorance between game media and gamers on the Playstation Vita. And what I mean when I say this is that most sites that are not retro game heavy and gamers who focus only on the new, give Sony so much credit and trouble for you to play current gen console game on a handheld. But this vita console is the forth handheld console to do this. It nothing new. So when I see morons on here acting like it is, It irritates me so much because they act like they know it all. The first was NEC / Hudson soft console TurboGrafx-16, which you could take the game card and place it in there handheld the TurboExpress. The next company to do this twice is Sega with the Master System, you could buy an accessory for your game gear and play master system games on there. The third was also by Sega and was the nomad a portable genesis. The Vita is not new, actually its worse because with all the other consoles I stated above you could buy a game for one and play it on the other due to it being a cartage. With the vita that's not the case. The vita not a walkman it can't play blue rays, and I doubt sony will allow you to buy a ps3 game and download it on the vita. You will probably have to buy two of everything. This right here is why the vita fells not playing console games on the go like adam said which makes me wonder how much does he know in this industry. Its the fact you have to buy two of a game is not going to help so the vita on this principle.

here's a positive story from IGN on the same topic..
Ty IGN for not making us Playstation owners feel stupid like G4..

Cross Platform Play: 2 Consoles, 1 Price
You do get somethings for free. Sometimes.
    UK, February 16, 2012

    by Daniel Krupa
    IGN UK
Sony has announced that when PlayStation Vita launches on 22 February you will be able to download MotorStorm RC, Hustle Kings, Top Darts, WipEout HD and HD Fury DLC for WipEout 2048 and Capcom's, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DLC on the PlayStation Store that will let you play them on both PS3 and PS Vita for one price.

And if you already own any of the above games on your PS3, you will be able to download the equivalent software to your PS Vita for free, and vice versa. So there's no longer any need to purchase the same content twice.

It's all a part of Sony's push to stress the relationship between the two consoles, and the importance of Cross Platform Play, which lets players compete against one another regardless of which console they choose to play on.

Leave it to G4 to point out something Nintendo has been doing for the last 20 years...
If it was the "Microsoft Vita 720" they'd treat it like it was the second coming..

G4 hates Sony. They always have. They Always will..

I was hoping to download PS2 classics on the Vita. Playing PS1 classics on the go was half the reason to get a Playstation Portable. Clearly, the device is capable of running PS2 classics, with titles announced like Metal Gears Solid HD Collection and the FF10 remake. At least this means I won't have to get rid of my physical collection of PS2 titles (what's left of it after god of war, metal gear solid, and shadow of the colossus got hd remakes), but this makes me nervous about whether or not the PS4 will be backwards compatible with PS2 titles. I still love going back and playing my Mega Man X Collection for the PS2.
