Karateka Announced From Prince of Persia Creator Jordan MechnerThis morning, gaming legend Jordan Mechner (Prince of Persia) announced the development of Karateka, a re-boot of his 1984 title.

Karateka will be available for PSN and XBLA in 2012. According to Mechner's blog:

"The new Karateka is much more than a port; it’s both a remake and a re-imagining of the original game for today’s consoles."

“Making the original Karateka was a labor of love," Mechner said in statement. "To have so many people embrace it and share the impact that game had on them has been incredibly fulfilling. In remaking Karateka, I want to honor the original with a compact, pick-up-and-play game that is fluid, atmospheric and beautiful.”

The original Karateka was a fighting/action game renowned for its fluid, lifelike animation, its impressive (for 1984!) graphics, and its plot. It will be fascinating to see how the original creator of the game updates it for the modern age.

Here's more of the philosophy behind the reboot from Mechner:

"I want to show that a game can be simple fun while also telling a human story in a way that’s emotional, atmospheric, and beautiful. I’ve been encouraged to see gamers embrace downloadable titles like Limbo and Braid — games that stand out because of their design integrity and strong artistic choices, although they were made on modest budgets and don’t represent technological breakthroughs. The industry is changing fast. It’s an exciting time for indie."

So what do you think? Are you going to pick up Karateka?

wOw.! Felt excited when i saw the title on your website..
immediately click the link and i wasn't wrong..The Original Karateka..

Feeling nostalgic all of a sudden.
"The first game that had me smashed that 8-Bit Nintendo controller" haha

Looking forward to this game! If all goes well this will be the first and only
downloadable content I would ever purchase. (*not that I hate PSN/XBLA content or DLC,
I'm just an "Old School" type of gamer who loves to see physically all my hard-earn dollars
    with title collections. ;-) Cheers!

I remember this game...the obligatory kick to the nuts if you didn't jog up to the girl at the end, vice walk up to her!

This was one of my top 10 worst inadvertent blunders in gaming: An infinitesimal distance from victory, only to be humiliated in the most painful way! :)

One of my favorite C-64 games, but I always get nervous when someone uses the words "...it s both a remake and a re-imagining of the original..." That almost never goes well.

I love Karateka! He could leave the graphics the same for all I care. Just change the gameplay. I got my assed kicked thoroughly on my Atari 7800 and I enjoyed every second of it!

Probably one of the best comment threads on this page. For no other reason except that I am willing to bet that the majority if not all of the commenters here, were born before 1988.

Long live the original gaming generation!!! And I can't wait to see this game!

Remember when you first encountered that damned bird? The bugger has, like, 4 health while your hit bar fills up the bottom of the screen? Talk about getting schooled! I hated that bird.

What always puzzled me was if the Princess was capable of a one-hit kill, WHY COULDN'T SHE RESCUE HERSELF?! Seriously! What the what, Princess! I'm over here getting schooled by a damned bird with 4 hit points while you're rockin' the five fingers of death!!!

    Ah, Karateka.

Who could forget going through the entire game, killing the final boss, reaching the princess but forgetting to lower battle stance, resulting in her panicking and killing me in one hit... Forcing me to start the game from scratch to get to the ending again.
