Guinness, the standard-bearer for world records, has declared that the 2010 Call of Duty release from Treyarch, Black Ops, ranks at number one on the Top 50 Video Game Endings of All Time list. So that happened. Science wasn't used to determine the winner; instead, the game won in a poll that "13,519 fans of gaming" participated in. Moral of the story? More of you should get out and vote next time.
I'm a definite Call of Duty fan, and Black Ops is one of the series' superior titles in my own book. Best game ending ever though? Ehhhhhh.... Does such an objective judgment even belong in the Guinness record book, especially when it's just decided by a poll with a relatively small turnout?
No, I don't take any of this seriously. Any list that names Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II the best at anything is immediately suspicious. But since we're talking about best game endings, why don't you share some of your favorites in the comments? You can also hit the jump for the full list.

Any list that has Black Ops over Shadow of the Colossus in "Best Endings Ever" has completely no cred in my opinion. Plain and simple as that. Who did they poll? People who are still currently playing on the Black Ops servers? Wow....really saddened by this one Guinness. I feel completely underwhelmed...

heres my top ending in games
1. metal gear solid 3- the adversatiy this guy faces is ridiculous. ive never seen anything like it in a game since. bigg boss is the shizz nizz
2. god of war 2- fighting the sisters of time is one of the coolest points in the god of war series, or any hack and slash game for that matter. and how can you not love the ending with you teaming up with the titans and climbing up mt olympus.

I honestly think that most of the people that voted for Black Ops had never played any of these other games (aside from the other COD titles.)

It's funny that they include EVERY Call of Duty game and I cannot remember the ending to a single one. That how memorable those campaigns were. I love the Mass Effect endings and don't think that 3 is going to disappoint. I would say the best ending ever though is Half-Life 2: Episode 2. What a cliffhanger!

The only first person shooter I would award for anything story line wise is: CoD Big Red 1. Maybe something for F.E.A.R.. Call of duty has went downhill after CoD 4 MW. Hopefully once some new development teams get put on them I will be able to enjoy them again.. (Prob not for a long time)

No. Also, Reach's ending wasn't that great either. The whole story needed to be about 20- no, 40% cooler.
Looking at the list, I actually think this whole thing was just tossed together.

I think this also brings up another conundrum... What exactly constitutes the ending of a game? It varies from game to game. For the most part I would say the ending is when the story gets to it's resolution in the third act. But then what constitutes a great ending? Would we merely be satisfied by an exceptionally climactic gameplay sequence or do we want our story to wrap up nicely? A truly great ending will give us both. Unfortunately, those are few and far between nowadays. Of the games I played this last year... Infamous 2 did it. P.S. Sucker Punch, you guys are awesome.

I don't know how people like the Fallout 3 ending. I really liked the first Assassins Creed ending but I don't think its top 5 for me.

Interesting.. Well given the "story ending" I can see this that it would make sense. I wouldn't personally vote for this but it has a very good cinematic twist ending. Alex Mason is/was Viktor Reznov and maybe possibly an assassin who killed JFK.
Personally I loved, and yet hated MW3 ending. I thought it was rather stupid on how you made it too the top, but I loved it at the same time. I wouldn't of course voted it for #1 either.

Gotta ask how do any pure shooters have the best storyline ending when 99% of the game is played simply for multiplayer. Best ending for games always come from RPG or story driven RTS games whether it it Mass Effect or Starcraft.
Btw Planescape: Torment had the best ending ever along with the best narrative and story to go along with it.

I'm quite baffled about this list, there are many other games like with great story like Batman Arkham City, Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid series, StarCraft series, Red Dead: Redemption, and even L.A. Noire . Though I did love the campaign in Halo Reach (Just because Noble 6 fought to the last breath, which combined story and gameplay quite wonderfully at that), it shouldn't be on the top 5. Which also surprises me is to see Pokemon Black/White on there, I played it and loved it, but bleh it wasn't "that" amazing.
Though this is all in my opinion, and I could be completely wrong.

It was probably too late to include it, but Batman Arkham City was the best ending of any game ever. The entire Arkham story line was incredible, but that ending was beyond all expectations. It was absolutely brilliant, and showed off their relationship perfectly.

The Black Ops story was basically just a rip-off of Fight Club. Also as much as I love Halo: Reach it shouldn't have number 2. Everybody should have already known how it was going to end!
