Xbox 360 Successor Rumored To Go The Tablet Controller Route

Xbox 720 Ad Spotted In Real Steel Trailer

There have been a lot of rumors swirling around Microsoft and its plans for the next generation of console gaming so far this year. The latest comes from the print magazine Xbox World (via All Games Beta) in a report that doesn't attribute its details to any sources, anonymous or otherwise.

The next Microsoft console is described as a "matte-black media hub with... augmented reality, direction sound and a four-player finger-tracking Kinect." It will also supposedly use a tablet-like controller that consists of "an HD screen surrounded by the traditional Xbox 360 buttons and sticks." This contraption will supposedly make its first appearance at E3 in June.

I continue to have serious doubts about any and all rumors relating to the next generation of console, though it certainly behooves Microsoft to enter into the portable realm. The company has long resisted following Nintendo's and Sony's lead on releasing some kind of handheld gaming device, but it has now reached a point where Microsoft risks being left behind if it doesn't follow suit.

Just look at what happened with Nintendo's Wii. It hit the market without any HD output, reduced graphics processing capabilities compared to its competitors and an unwieldy, user-unfriendly interface for online gaming. Had it not been for the wider world's embrace of the console's unique motion control features, Nintendo would have had a disaster on its hands. It's no surprise at all that the Wii U is the first console announced for the next generation; Nintendo has some catching up to do.

Sony's PlayStation Vita arrives now at a perfect time. It's easy to look at the less-than-stellar launch so far -- something I think is more due to the marketing than the actual technology -- and see nothing but doom ahead. Really though, the Vita has the potential to keep the PS3 competitive with the new bells and whistles that the Wii U provides. When you get right down to it, Sony's new handheld is very similar to the Wii U's tablet controller: you've got most of the functions that you would need on a standard controller PLUS an HD touchscreen. The potential is there for the PS3/Vita combo to play the same games that a Wii U will be able to.

So Nintendo is committed now to the Wii U, whether or not the planned fall 2012 release becomes a reality. Sony is similarly committed to the Vita, and likely won't be announcing a new console until next year, at the earliest. All of this leaves Microsoft in a potentially advantageous position, if it plays its cards right.

Xbox Live has the community in place, and the features necessary to keep that community tight and loyal. Microsoft's robust set of exclusives are also complemented by some strong third-party relationships. The increasingly obvious absence in the Xbox catalog is a portable solution. Windows Phone 7 doesn't cut it. Microsoft is going to need a dedicated portable gaming solution to compete on all fronts in the next generation.

And now we're back to the Xbox World report. I'll continue to doubt all of these rumors that pop up until they're confirmed as fact, but I also don't think it's a stretch at this point to assume that Microsoft has some kind of touchscreen-enabled control interface that could potentially double as a portable device in the works. Especially since the upcoming Windows 8 OS is meant to integrate Microsoft products across all platforms. We're living in an increasingly tablet-oriented world, and it's a safe bet that MS realizes it. That gaping hole in its product catalog will almost certainly be filled soon, and I'd frankly be shocked if that tech wasn't a fully integrated member of the Xbox family.

This has to be true(Xbox 360 Successor Rumored To Go The Tablet Controller Rout3).Why would G4 T.V. be talking about this unless some actually seen it at a Micro Soft electronics expo. I do believe the rumor that Xbox 360 Successor Rumored To Go The Tablet Controller Route is true.Honestly why someone make up the Xbox 360 Successor Rumored To Go The Tablet Controller Route as a lie and not the truth? I'm not trying to be mean to Microsoft fans so can you tell me if i'm right or wrong her, that Microsoft is doing exactly what Nintendo is. That's the impression I got from reading this, so can you tell me if I'm right or wrong.

Rumors are lies until officially announced. I could say, "Sony are going to shut down the playstation branch because they are losing money off of playstation, I have a very reliable source that told me so." Would I be right? Partially, playstation is losing money, causing sony to lose money, but that doesn't mean that they are going to shut down the playstation branch, but it also doesn't mean that they wouldn't. Rumors are lies until proven otherwise, plain and simple.

If it is anything like that razer gaming tablet at E3 I am down for that with the option of using original controller.

As long as the D-Pad isn't stiff, and price of the controllers don't skyrocket as a result of the added screen, I don't care what they do.

There's an old saying: "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" The 360 controller is practically perfect, don't change it.

This sounds like the worst possible idea I could think of. Their Xbox 360 controller is one of the reasons I would marry my 360 if I could.

I hope MS doesn't do what Nintendo has always done and not listen to its customers. Xbox fans are pretty balanced for the most part. They see Kinect and don't do the " Internet hate" thing compared to ps3 owners, but many take a wait and see attitude. The same may be try for the rumored new controller.

But we still want our regular controller and we still want hardcore games.

Don't forget us MS. Don't turn into a Nintendo.

if this "xbox 720" goes through and it hits the market...... xbox will still suck!! cause they won't change anything. period! thats how Microsoft is, you will still have to pay for online gameplay, the graphics will still suck... etc. what they need to do is join in on the handheld stuff!! like a handheld xbox thingy...

I don't know if g4 has lookeds at hand held sales from nintendo or sony but microsoft needs to stay far away from handhelds they suck, nintendo ended the 4 quarter of 2011 with nearly down a billion dollars in sales so no stick to the xbox without the motion crap controller let me sit on my irish ass and immerse myself in the game not worry about a 13 year old beating me because he has more energy then me not skills

If they make the controller a tablet and not support their regular style controllers then I will not get an Xbox. Their controllers right now work perfect, layout and the D-Pad have always been great with no problems at all.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!

Note to next-gen consoles: Just give us regular controllers, that fit well in our hands and are comfortable (almost like we have already), improved visuals, and BLAM you have our money already!

I don't see how a large and screened controller, that is probably uncomfortable to hold long-term and is hard as hell on batteries too, could be used or even marketed to anyone other than casual gamers..

As if the industry wasn't already casual focused enough as it is, oh sorry I mean "accessible".

It just does not paint a very pretty picture in my mind for what the next-gen will be, and chances are (if this is true) there's no reason to believe Sony will not be doing something similar too.

im not buying this unless it comes with full controller support. preferably the 360 controller, I dont see anything wrong with the current one besides the D-pad, but the newer model fixed that anyway

Keep it a rumor, lol, Just more things to get people upset about when their 720 is crashing all the time. I say, actually take your time making it and don't try rushing everything to keep up with the competition. Patience is a virtue.
