Sony announced that PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts will now be renamed Sony Entertainment Network accounts as of February 7th, coinciding with an update to its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. Other than the name change, there does not seem to be any other changes to service, so rest assured PlayStation fans, all is well online for gaming and PSN as a name should still exist.
"It's just a change in the name of the account," said a Sony Spokesperson. "When PSN users log in after the update, they won't experience any changes in the XMB as they know it." They continued, "The goal is one login in for all Sony devices; It helps clarify the unity between PSN and other Sony Entertainment Network services."
If anything, the rebranding of accounts is perfectly timed for Sony's U.S. launch of the PlayStation Vita, which is aimed not only at gamers but as a cross-media device that offers music and movies as well. In a statement issued by Sony, the company shared:
This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with “Sony Entertainment Network.” This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.
PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita system owners will be the only ones experiencing the update. PlayStation Portable (PSP) owners will not receive an update for these devices at this time. Sony Entertainment Network accounts will also enable access to Sony's Music Unlimited, Video Unlimited and PlayMemories Online (currently called Personal Space).
Worthy of panic? No big deal? What do you think of the name change?

I'm pretty sure the name PSN is not changing. In the Email Sony sent out they say "account name". I think their just doing away with your Playstation network account, Not the name of PSN. "The name of your "PlayStation Network account" is changing to a "Sony Entertainment Network account." - From the Email.

I'm still going to call it PSN, SEN or saying it as a name doesnt feel right. If you going to change the name, give us a 1 time deal to change our PSN/SEN ID name then. Fresh start with a fresh name

This is Sony s next step towards the system that does everything. Games, movies, music, social networking, and anything else that they can send over a wire will arrive on this system. The Sony Entertainment System (PS4) is not going to be a game console; it s going to be a router that connects to everything in the house including the fridge. Some people don't like the idea of having a video game console as their media source. It s not very grownup and sounds difficult. The SES will not use a kiddy PSN handle with a juvenile play on words, Mr. Seemor Butts. It will use a facebook login so all your friends will get an update that you are watching reruns of Grey s Anatomy on Netfix or Hulu. Paypal integration is next on the agenda so you can consolidate your micro transactions with your Amazon and iTunes accounts. My wife is going to love this thing. I just hope I can still use it to play games.

Honestly, this doesn't effect us gamers so I don't really care. They can call the network whatever floats their boat so long as it doesn't disrupt my service.

Actually scratch that haha, just needed to change how you approach the abrivation :P
Instead of pronouncing each letter S-E-N like we did with PSN, you just need to say it like a word "Sen".
It's not nearly as bad that way, but I still don't care for it much as a new name.

As far as names go, SEN hardly rolls off the tounge like PSN does. It's actually feels a bit awkward to say.

As long as it doesn't effect the credits or the games I have previouly downloaded on the PSN...I really couldn't care less. What's in a name anyway?

You know what would be cool Sony? If with this name change you could let people who created PSN accounts before they were 18 to go from Sub to Master Accounts. Cause you know its not like that's not a growing problem since people usually are introduced to gaming at a young age and they continue to enjoy the hobby as adults. Just a thought!

D: can't call it PSN anymore SEN just doesn't roll....

Not much to be worried about... Just a slight name change... I'm excited for the Vita release...Looks amazing.

And this will get them their numbers for Qriocity. I know I didn't care to sign up for qriocity when it came out. There's no need to buy into a second service and having to rebuy all the songs I already have on my first service.

Do you think this means that their next console will be named something different than Playstation?
Cryptomaster420
once they knock vita down to @ least $250 or $275 i may get it we all know the 3DS is very overpriced not worth getting besides for OoT 3DS
CommunistSnake
I might get a Vita as long as it has Metal Gear and a fairly good amount of racing games.
