Dance Central 2

Instead of watching the big game this weekend, you should have one of your own. All the fancy commercials have already hit the Internet. You could sit through three hours of what’s to be essentially a rerun of a couple of years ago, or you could make history on your own. Nerds unite and throw off the shackles forced upon you by the jocks of the world. We must join forces and grills to take down our tyrannical sports-hungry oppressors with our own Anti-Super Bowl Party!

Food, friends, and fun are the only things necessary for a great party. Football never needs to enter the equation. You already have the food and friends coming over. Skip the inevitable disappointment of a terrible Super Bowl this year. Turn your party into a competition with a couple of quick rules and some games you probably have around the house. Cheer as teams race to the finish line. Laugh along with your friends as you compete in some of the craziest games around. And feel better about yourself for not having to sit through another terrible halftime show.

Our First Look At Mario Kart 3DS From E3 2011

The Setup:

Here’s the easy part. As people come to the party, pass out red and blue slips of paper to correspond with the competing teams. I suggest splitting up couples. Nothing gets the competitive humors flowing like people who know each other a little too well being put on separate teams. You should probably play ref just to keep things moving. Sorry, but being slightly outside of the game helps to move things along such as switching out games or serving up food. While one team goes home a winner, hosting a successful evening of entertainment may just be the biggest prize of them all.

Now, it’s time for the games. Obviously, I don’t know what in your living room so I’m presenting to you a smattering of games across the board. The best games don’t always make for the best party games. Think fun, visual, and quick. There’s no need to spend the whole party on one game alone. That’s why we’re skipping the Super Bowl in the first place. Keep scoring consistent. An expert in Super Street Fighter IV might not be the best Mario Kart player. Everyone needs a chance to shine.

Here are some gaming suggestions for your Anti-Super Bowl Party.

Happy Action Theater

Pre-Game Show – Happy Action Theater

Points Rewarded: None – just have fun

Let’s start off slow. As people arrive, you want to get into the spirit of play and try not to get on people’s nerves. Tim Schafer’s new downloadable game, Happy Action Theater, lets your guests ease into the cool waters of competition. Players get to participate in a number of events such as crushing cities, playing in a virtual ball pit, or trying to avoid the lava floor. There’s no score to beat or achievement to gain here. Happy Action Theater is pure senseless entertainment that anyone can quickly jump into for a couple of minutes of fun before the big game.

Castle Crashers

First Quarter - Castle Crashers (Save the Princess)

Points Rewarded: 20

Almost everyone can wrap their heads as well as their hands around this colorful hack-and-slash adventure game. Up to four knights, two members from each team, venture out into the kingdom besieged by the evil emperor, they’ll need to work together to get through a blood soaked battlefield, past the mechanized ram, and through the door-toting boss of the level. The real competition occurs at the end when all four of them must fight for a kiss of the fair princess. The one that gains the smooch wins the points for their team. Even if you’ve never played Castle Crashers before, it will take only minutes to get to the princess.

Second Quarter - B.U.T.T.O.N.

Points Rewarded: 20

Get up. Get ready. You’re going to need a lot of room and a couple of devious players to win at B.U.T.T.O.N. - Brutally Unfair Tactics Totally OK Now. Follow the on screen commands to win. It’s as easy as that. Sing, dance, and then hit your button or be the last to hit the button to win. Of course, everyone else gets the same instructions. Winning can still be simple if you are willing to cheat. Push people out of the way, cover your button, or push the button of other players. Half the fun of the game is figuring out the best way to cheat. The other half of the fun comes from watching people do anything to push a button.

You Don't Know Jack

You Don’t Know Jack

Points Rewarded: 20

I don’t need to point out that quiz games make for excellent party games. You always know the answer when you’re not playing and stare blankly at the screen every time your turn comes up. Now you’ll have a whole cheering squad with hopefully the right answer rooting for you answer a question in You Don't Know Jack. Fun, quick, and you get a clear winner at the end of the game. What’s not to like?

Metagame

Metagame

Points Rewarded: 20

We’re taking this one off the grid as we hit the cardboard madness that is Metagame. Think of it as a message board coming to life as you argue over some of the best games to ever grace a PC or a console. Each player gets a series of cards with games printed on them as well as a couple of cards with statements like “most educational” or “most influential.” With the cards you have in your hand, you have to be able to argue the point for one of them while someone else gets to use a game in their hand to argue the same point. As ref, you’ll have to make the call. Remember, it’s not always about facts. A good performance can go a long way.

Rock Band 2

Halftime – Battle of the Rock Band/Guitar Hero

Points Rewarded: None – We need a break.

It’s time for everyone to stretch their legs, get a bite to eat, and rock out. Put away your differences and strap on a little plastic guitar. The party game that took center stage and most of your closet space still rocks when you have people willing to croon, play a couple of licks, or just rock out on the drums. If you don’t have the instruments, Dance Central 2 will keep the party shaking and the partiers happy. Nothing brings people together quite like some good music and a little performance. Somehow the Super Bowl Halftime organizers still haven’t figured out that one.

'Boom Blox Bash Party' Impressions

Boom Blox: Bash Party

Points Rewarded: 20

As one of the best hidden gems in the Wii collection, Boom Blox: Bash Party tests your mind as well as your hand at tossing, building, shooting, or simply destroying your opponent’s structure. Think of it as virtual Jenga without the mess. Players take turn at a variety of games to score points. Practically anyone with a little coordination can get behind this game.

5 Reasons Why You Should Be Excited About Rayman Origins

Rayman Origins

Points Rewarded: 20

Co-operative and competitive, Rayman Origins lets everyone work together while secretly working against each other. Everyone needs to survive, but only one person can bring home all the loot in this gorgeous platformer. If you are looking for an alternative, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One gives you that feeling of working together while secretly trying to backstab your friends. You may spend the rest of the party just throwing people off of ledges. Now that’s what I call entertainment.

LeedMees

Leedmees

Points Rewarded: 20

I’ve touted this little downloadable game before, but it bears repeating. This downloadable title combines the motion tracking ability of the Kinect with something akin to Lemmings. As slightly mindless creatures pop out of one portal, it’s up to the virtual stick figure you to help them to the exit portal. Use your body to move or bridge the gap that these little walkers need to make their way home. Throw a second player in the mix to watch as to people try to bend and shift virtual creatures from one arm to another. Team with the highest score wins.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Revealed

Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

Points Rewarded: 20

This one is a little too easy, but it’s always a party pleaser. Build your own little EVO tournament as you gather the gang together in a little friendly competition. Sparks will fly as some of the greatest fighters across the Marvel and Capcom universe collide on screen. Even if you’re like me and couldn’t pull off a combo to save your life, sitting back and watching the characters of Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 or any fighting game will keep you entertained for hours - or at least until it’s time to go home.

Our First Achievements Ever

Secret Achievements

Here’s the trick to turn a good party into a great one. Sprinkling in random points here and there for good behavior lets you reward your guests or keep a competition from being a blowout. The trick is to make them mean something and to keep consistent with the rewards. Here are some examples that you can use or make up your own.

Waterboy (5 points) – Get two drinks for other people.

Leader of the pack (5 points) – Volunteer to play for three games straight.

Social Bug (10 points) – Talk to everyone once at the party.

Best Boy (5 points) – Help move items for any of the games.

Oh Say Can You Sing (5 points) – Score a perfect for singing in either Rock Band or Guitar Hero
