Plenty of questions preceded Sony's reveal of the upcoming new IP from Naughty Dog, The Last of Us, at last year's Video Game Awards show. The trailer confirmed a few facts, but it ultimately did what any proper tease should do: raise all sorts of new questions. More answers will be coming next month when Game Informer showcases The Last of Us in a cover story, and the first few facts (and screens!) have slipped out to whet your appetites.
I know I wasn't alone in guessing that, based on what we saw in the trailer, gamers could expect some kind of co-op component. While the GI teaser story points out that the game "is not one long escort mission," the young girl Ellie who was seen in the trailer will be entirely AI-controlled. That probably rules out co-op play.
The GI piece also confirms that combat in The Last of Us is a mixture of gunplay and close-quarters head-bashing. It's probably oversimplifying things to label the game as survival-horror based on such a small detail, but that sort of resource management is definitely a staple of the genre. We also now know that at least some portion of the game will be set in Pittsburgh. It's not clear how much, but I would guess that it's a fair chunk, based on how last year's trailer ended.
What do you make of all this? I don't want to say I'm disappointed since so little has been shown, but I'll be honest: after the trailer reveal, I was expecting something a little different. Naughty Dog has done a great job of turning Nolan North-voiced characters into Heroic Guy protagonists, and I was really hoping that The Last of Us might flip things a bit. Maybe with co-op. Maybe with young Ellie in the hero's seat. Maybe with you controlling a vast army of fungus-zombies bent on destroying what little remains of humanity.
Okay, I never really entertained that last possibility. Cool idea, though.
Again, it's SUPER early to be making any judgments. That's why I'm not. But I'm also not feeling over the moon for The Last of Us just yet. Based on the trailer and these first details, it just seems like another pretty Naughty Dog game that I'll almost certainly play, as opposed to the truly special and eye-opening surprise that the first Uncharted was. Nothing wrong with that at all, but I'm hopeful that some of the still-to-be-revealed details will step things up a bit.

Not sure if this is of any interest but I think that game is in Wisconsin and/or Minnesota. I saw highway 53 in one of the pictures. This could be wrong because 53 runs into Canada.

If they want to make this a survival/horror type game set in Pittsburgh then they need to have it set during a winter rush hour with folks trying to get to a Steelers/Ravens game before a blizzard sets in- and you still have to get to the Giant Eagle to get bread, milk and TP. That- is a believable setting...

Now all you people say is how companies put to co-op in games that don't need it. Now there is no co-op in this game yet you say there should be since there are two characters. Story driven games especially new IPs shouldn't have co-op in my opinion. If you wan't to introduce a new IP, having a good story is the best way to go. Uncharted and Bioshock came out with no co-op the first thing G4 asked was. Will there be co-op? The same group that says most games should have it. And anyone judges a game on how a trailer shows is a complete idiot. You guys can give me a 100 thumbs down i don't care.

I'm kind of scared about this game, I've seen the trailer and screenshots, but it seems like they are trying to cover things up by not showing gameplay footage. It's on my "50%/50%" list, looks good from what I've seen of it, but I haven't seen any gameplay, so I'm not really sure. I'm sort of leaning towards buying it since it's my hometown, but it all really depends on the gameplay, the gameplay is the deal breaker.

That's why GI is the only site/mag that carries any weight with me. And I hate Gamestop.

I'm thinking this is going to be like Heavy Rain plus Uncharted, with Zombies. A huge improvement over something like Dead Island.

I was really hoping for co-op but I would guess no co-op will make for a stronger story.
