BioWare took a huge gamble on Star Wars: The Old Republic, and it's paying off, according to EA's Q3 report. "Star Wars: The Old Republic is developing a committed community of players with more than 1.7 million active subscribers and growing," said Chief Executive Officer John Riccitiello in a statement.
Not only does SWTOR have 1.7 million subscribers it has also sold through more than two million units in a month.
The creation of a top-tier, subscription based MMO is an incredibly risky endeavor, especially when it's an MMO based on a fictional universe that already had an MMO--remember Star Wars: Galaxies? You can bet EA and Bioware were keen to make a very different kind of game than that one, with a different result. You can also bet that nerves were on edge at both companies while they awaited the results of the The Old Republic launch. Today's financial announcement makes it official: SW:TOR is healthy.
Here are a few more just-released SW:TOR facts:
- Over 239 million in-game hours, or over 332,000 months and over 27,000 years of in-game time
- Over 20 billion NPCs killed
- Over 148 billion credits spent
“We’re truly honored and humbled by the incredibly strong support from our players who are enjoying Star Wars: The Old Republic,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder of BioWare and General Manager of EA’s BioWare Label. “Our entire team worked very hard over the holidays to deliver a smooth experience at launch, and the resulting response to the game from our fans and critics has been exceptionally gratifying.”

I can't wait till 2-3 years down the line when I can flaunt my founders title and laugh at people who though this game was a wow clone.

I plan to play swtor as soon as the starting price is not $60 for the first month. I understand they want to make back the massive money they spent, but they will do it alot quicker if I didn't feel like I was buying a full game for one month.

I like it more than wow, I like how you get more into what you're doing (quests/missions) by just listening to the npcs instead of skipping a book like in wow. I'm actually following what's going on, not just grinding.

It will be interesting to see how this game will grow. so far so good. I enjoyed beta aside from the extremely long wait times when beta invitations increased. I plan to revisit SWTOR this summer after Bioware has had time to work out the some of the kinks.
