Baseball player turned gaming impresario Curt Schilling has ambitious plans for his company’s first product. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a huge, open world RPG with action combat elements that is planned as the first release in a franchise that will span consoles, PCs, mobile games, and the MMO space. The problem: Many gamers’ first real taste of Amalur was in the form of a demo that is reportedly very, very buggy. So glitch-ridden, in fact, that Schilling has apologized personally to gamers on the popular NeoGAF forum.
“The demo? Ya, it is way way WAYYYYY more buggy than anything ANYONE should ever release, much less a demo,” Schilling posted, going on to promise that, from a bug perspective, the demo is “in NO WAY representative of the final code or product.”
By way of explanation, Schilling gives some insight into the difficulty inherent in releasing a demo, posting:
“In a partnership there is a lot of give and take, and I believe in my team, they are world class, but when you have a publisher there are things happening you'd rather not choose. Shipping old code out 3 months prior to gold master to a 3rd party with no stake in the demo success can be problematic. I am sure they made the best demo they could but as a studio packed to the gills with gamers, we refuse to believe code has to be unplayably buggy at launch, it doesn't.”
Make no mistake: Schilling isn't pinning the blame on publisher EA. Schilling says that, ultimately, "it's on us."
Schilling’s apology came after reading NeoGAF's less than stellar reactions to the demo while flying from LA to Boston, returning from a media tour promoting the game. It must have been a rough flight. Before he left Los Angeles, Schilling seemed very happy with the demo, telling X-Play:
“One of the challenges around the demo, which has gotten phenomenal response --EA absolutely, nailed it with the intent of doing this demo. I didn’t believe you could do this and show – how can you show 300 hours of gameplay in 45 minutes? It’s like watching one pitch of a baseball game and saying, ‘I don’t like this sport.’.”
Check out the rest of X-Play’s interview with Curt Schilling on February 6 at 6:30 PM EST. Schilling goes way in-depth about the game; it is not an episode to be missed.
Glitchy demo or not, we love Curt Schilling because of his uncompromising honesty and his legit hardcore-gamer tendencies. We also love him because he posts things like this:
"Generally people that post the real bad stuff about me are Democrats and Yankee fans, and that's cool, I get it. But you Yankee fans, keep hating, that's cool, I understand. Please don't come here and post 'You" have 27 or 28 rings or whatever, unless your Derek Jeter because YOU have none, I have 3, I was honored to play with 3 very special groups of men and be a part of 3 World Championships, and that made some folks mad..."
That's how you silence haters! Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning comes out on February 7.

Buy games waste your cash. Why not boycott this new releases and play all these free version games that is available for play, you will never ever have enough time free in any day to do that and it may just make the prices drop and full player single player offline much more attractive to make who
ever pay just for a percent of a game then have to finish playing it online to finish is just a gimmick to grab more money out of your pocket. Boycott all new releases play only the old games that have been tried and proven their worth.

i dont know what they saw in that demo but i am going to buy KOA because of it

Despite the 360 demo version of the game freezing on me towards the end, I'm still going to buy this game. Combat was smooth and fun I can see myself loosing plenty of hours in this game and I understand that the demo is not what the final version will be like. Curt is a stand up kind of guy for taking responsibility for the demo released. And that's coming from a Democrat ;D

Great demo.;. I see lots of potential. I honestly think the sequel will be amazing. This one will be very very good. The only demo bug I got was one freeze, but that wasn't as annoying as the dialogue rushing by in most conversations once you leave the first main area of the demo.

Played it on PS3 and was annoyed with some of the glitches but played through to the end. This game has the potential of being 4/5 if the delevoper puts a little more TLC into the game.
BLACKxX33
Played the demo on Xbox Live saw one glitch other then that it was fantastic

I played the demo when it came out for xbox live and only saw one glitch. But other then that it is Game of The Year contender
yogi_bear_rules

So he's a Republican.....Now I don't want to buy his game anymore. Feel like I would be supporting his beliefs in some way, and I can't support right wing beliefs, or as I like to call it, bat shat crazy backwards delusional beliefs.
May just rent this baby or buy used.

Meh I just played the demo for the Mass Effect 3 items but it is a good game and had no bugs in the 360 version.

one more thing to add, skyrim was the most glitchy game ive ever played and still won goty awards and rave 10/10 reviews so dont hold a few minor demo glitches against them
nerdcorenoob
played the demo about 4 times and experienced nothing, got the game reserved and paid in full, its gonna be great, way to go bhg!

Dragon Age Origins has spoiled me ,I don't think there will be any Flirting or Romance in KOA so I think I will pass.

Luckily I will not be able to pick up the game on day one even though I have it pre-order so I will be able to see some reviews before my final purchase. I played the demo and it took me about three to four play through to get to the end of the game. I realize it isn't a finished product with bugs I saw it makes me nervous about purchasing the product. I hope that the game does get the fixes needed to be a real good game.

I don't think I've had any bugs in the demo whatsoever. This game's gonna be fantastic if the demo is anything to go by, though.

lol i love how he gets mad at yankee fans.
im a Jays fan and i hate that im in the same
division as those rich azz mofos.
that being said, you can see the intent of this game,
even through its buggy beta, and its solid.
its nice for RPG fans to have a new world to explore.

I played the demo on the ps3 and the only glitches I encountered were some trippy visual ones. All in all, I enjoyed it and am definitely picking up the game. I probably wouldn't have if I hadn't played the demo.

I played the demo on PC via steam and had no problems with it. I enjoyed the demo and am looking forward to the release.
The only bug I really saw was the graphics bug where it was blacked out due to the post processing issue, but 2 mins on google and I found out about it and continued on.
KingGainerXan
Couldn't even get it to run. After the 'Connecting to EA Servers', the screen went black (except for the swirly blue load icon), and stayed that way for 3 minutes, at which point I quit out of the game...
randallmcginness
I'm not a huge RPG fan (the more I play them, the more i'm starting to like them) but I am a Curt Schilling fan so i wanted to check the game out. I actually really enjoyed it. It was buggy and my character would often times bounce to different locations on the screen but it was overall fun.
I most likely won't buy the game when it comes out - due to a backlog of games I need to play, but will one day pick this up.
