Nintendo Reveals Nintendo Network

During an investor presentation held last night, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata gave the world a glimpse of what we can expect from the Wii U when it launches later this year. One of the most interesting pieces of news concerns Nintendo's online plans: The revelation of The Nintendo Network, Nintendo's online platform.

The Nintendo Network seems planned as a fully functional online hub, like the PSN and Xbox Live. It will allow "competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content." On the Wii U, you'll have personal user accounts, too.

This should come as a relief for Nintendo fans looking forward to the new console, as it seems the plan is for the Big N to finally install a fully-baked online system in one of their consoles.

Check out this demo of other Wii U functions:

If people are shocked about what nintendo is doing there idiots. Nintendo is famous for take huge innovation before any one else,(example: joysticks) then other companies use what nintendo did and make it better, no matter how you look at Wii U is a good thing for everyone. If it does well then great for nintendo, and sony and Microsoft because they can take it and make it better like the playstation move and kinect, If it does bad than they know to not try it, thats how video games word nintendo seems like the only one that REALLY thinks out side the box. So you should thank nintendo for being crazy.

The idea that so many want to count Nintendo out is completely ridculious. They were the company that helped bring gaming to the masses and helped pioneer new ideas from the start. Some of which is and has been utilize by the other two.The have also always made a profit off each system they've sold unlike the other two that gamble big and sell their systems at a huge loss.To think some people actually thought Nintendo would never get a descent online was ridicuilous as well.Aspecially since theres so much money to be made from that huge market.Which was provin by Xbox live and PSN.Has Nintendo been prefect and not made any mistaskes? No of course not, but nether has Sony or Microsoft. Its when companies learn from them is when they grow to be better in the long run and help what befits the consumer.

I think this system is very cool. It might revive the Wii generation for two years maximum. I could be wrong, but who knows. This might do better than most predictions, but we'll wait and see.

All this talk about which console is better is stupid. Have friends come over to play Mario thats cool, play online with Halo, thats cool too. Kill Zone? Yup, cool game as well. I seriously don't understand why people bash on other consoles that they probably never even played. And by "played" I don't mean played it for five minutes at Gamestop that doesn't give you enough time to discover all the great and horrible things of a console.

You go Nintendo. Ive got an xbox 360, ps3 and a wii and i still play the wii just as much if not more than the others. Its a system that u can use when anyone comes over. Mum and dad to younger brothers and sisters. Friends of all ages. I play a bit online but i come from a time where your network was joining a couple of tvs and consoles together and playing the original Goldeneye, while mum went and got us all pizza for tea on a sat night. I love Nintendo and always will.

    @Gomez16

One would have to live in obscurity not to see all the Xbox720 news.

    Ever hear of:

    Windows 8

    Windows Mobile

    MS office

    XBL TV

easy to make money on a fully developed system and online infrastructure. I don't see xbox developing any handhelds, new console, or new online service.

    Everyone hates on Nintendo.

I think Nintendo has been taking notes and are trying to make their next system great in all aspects. People complained about the technical power, so they're beefing it up. Many complained about the poor network, they're promising something better. But I'm still skeptical.

Personally I'm hoping they deliver and make some changes. I grew up on Nintendo, but now find them to be really stale. Change is good, N. Change is good.

Gamers today have no respect for Nintendo and it's absolutely ridiculous. Once again no night with your online friends playing Call of Duty will ever be better than having some friends over with pizza and playing Mario Kart.

Gamers growing up these days are spoiled with all this online stuff. I remember as a kid in the 90's inviting a friend or two over to play Streets of Rage 2 on the Sega Genesis. Kids think they're so old but it was a simpler time.

I love online play and am glad that Nintendo is seriously going into it but it's not a necessity

Wow... i just think its funny how some people are saying that Nintendo is behind. Need i remind you also that when Nintendo came out with motion controls and such, a lot of people didn't think it was going to be a good idea. years pass and that's when people start to realize that "hey, Nintendo is making a lot money on this!!" so what did Sony and Microsoft did? they made there own motion based techs to boost sells. so don't bash Nintendo saying "They are way behind." and yes I'm a fan boy just in case you guy's are wondering. but don't get it twisted I'm a Xbox fan boy as well.

Ninty is slowly moving in the right direction. Hopefully they change the name too and make a couple of more cool announcements and maybe....just maybe I will buy at launch...

What's with all the Nintendo bashing? While it's true that they are behind the times with the whole online stuff, You gotta remember that they were running a different business model: They wanted people/families to play together, rather then connecting with someone across the globe... it didn't exactly hurt them, ya know. Besides we all know that Nintendo has marched to the beat of their own drum since they entered the video game market.

With that said, I'm glad that they are shifting their focus now to be more competitive with the likes of Sony and Microsoft. I'm really hoping this Wii U is a smash and they become the dominate force they once were!
