Tomb Raider Reboot Won't Be Coming To Wii U

The Future of Action / Adventure Games: BioShock Infinite, Max Payne 3, Tomb Raider And More

Both the Wii U and the Tomb Raider reboot from Crystal Dynamics were revealed at E3 last year. The thing about the Nintendo console is that it's finally going to be able to compete on the level of the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 in terms of raw power. With Lara Croft returning later this year, some of you might be hoping that her next adventure comes to the Wii U as well.

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. A newly posted FAQ from Crystal Dynamics confirms it (via CVG). "When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform," studio community manager Meagan Marie writes.

"Given that we’ve been working on the game quite a while before Wii U was announced I think it would not be right to try and port it across. If we started building a game for the Wii U we would build it very differently and we would build it with unique functionality." It's certainly likely that Lara Croft will eventually have a Wii U-based adventure of her own, but this upcoming game will not be it.

"Given that we ve been working on the game quite a while before Wii U was announced I think it would not be right to try and port it across." I just ran this by one of our marketing people for a translation and she says it means "can't be bothered".

I personally don't play the laura croft series because I have always thought of her as a gimp who wouldn't do what you told her to do so i have not played her game since it was on either dreamcast or playstation I can't remeber which. I don't plan to even try this game once it come out without at least good portion of alcohol involved then at least then it would make it more fun to play.

They're in talks with another company to do a Mac version and they can't be bothered with WiiU?

They're making it for 360, PS3, and PC (woo!).
It seems rather disingenuous to say that another one is just too much trouble and that they're building it for specific platforms.
I can almost guarantee the PC port will use DX9 for instance.

Lara Croft was getting too old the other games. She was 38 or 39 in Underworld and would be 43 if they put another game out now.

Crystal Dynamics didn't want to try to sell a 43 year old Lara Croft. Sooooooo REBOOT

Odd, would have thought Squeenix and Nintendo would be talking more with all those 3DS games they announced recently. (Crystal Dynamics publishes thru Squeenix)

Dear Wii U 3rd party devs.

It's ok to not use the tablet.
It's ok to fill the Wii U's library with ports.
It's ok to forget about new ways to play.

Why? Nintendo's first party will show you how it's done first...

Personally I don't understand the reasoning for a "reboot" I enjoyed the last few games and honestly I don't care about a "prequel" game to see how Laura became the Laura we know.

Smart move, the WiiU's announcement was a little too late for there to be any chance for things to happen that way...

This is both good and bad, it's great because it sounds like developers want to make a unique experience on the WiiU, it's bad in that the WiiU will miss out on this game.

Wii U controller needs to be portable, with the functionalities of portable devices.

Totally understandable, truly new games can take 2yrs. or more to be finished and released on the console they were developed for. Although I have not been a big fan of Nintendo for a good while, it's nice to know a developer is not just going to make a crappy halfhearted port for a quick money grab. I think those people awaiting the arrival of the Wii-U should feel the same way.

Like the article said, maybe future Wii-U owners will get their own dedicated Tomb Raider game.

Nintendo should stick with the Metroid,Mario, zelda and the pokemon series seems to be working for em
