Xbox 360 Successor Rumor Points To Fall 2013 Release

Xbox 720 Ad Spotted In Real Steel Trailer

Rumors of an Xbox 360 successor have been gathering steam in recent months. Blame part of this on the fact that the six-year-old console is simply inching closer to its eventual replacement. There's also the possibility that there's some actual truth behind the rumors. The latest comes "sources close to the project" speaking to IGN, and it gets pretty specific.

Assuming the unnamed sources are correct, the next-generation Xbox will arrive in late-October or November 2013 packing a GPU modeled after AMD's Radeon HD 6670 video card. That means DirectX 11 and 3D display support, as well as multidisplay output. 1080p too, but that should go without saying at this point. The new console is expected to be roughly six times more powerful than the Xbox 360 and "will yield 20 percent greater performance than" Nintendo's Wii U.

The system configuration should be finalized by August, which is when developers are expected to start receiving their devkits. Given all of this, an E3 reveal is likely, assuming of course that the sources are accurate.

I figure that after some market testing and/or small group studies they will find that people aren't ready to buy all new equipment and games, so they'll postpone it. The 360 hasn't had an affordable price for long, I don't think It will be a good idea to put out an expensive system now. They will probably take extra time to develop the affordability of the technology before they release it. Plus there are still games coming out that wow people, they won't want to cut the lifespan of the 360 short if it still has legs. They will probably wait until it's on the decline first. Besides, they still have Halo 4 coming out this year. So it should be two years at least before we see a new console.

There is also a chance that they are just getting a head start, but putting it on the backburner. On standby. They've said before that they want to release the next system before Nintendo and Sony release their's, just like they did for the 360. So whenever they hear that the PS4 is on the way, they will switch Xbox 720 development to top priority. Their plan would be to be prepared to release the 720 first, without having to rush and release a system that isn't completely ready this time.

Modeled after. Modeled after. The GPU will be modeled after it. They are making a new one modeled after that GPU. They are just reusing the designs of that GPU, they will most likely use newer, more powerful components. Hence 6 times more powerful than 360. Although I'm a little skeptical that they will really be able improve it as much as is usual between console generations, while remaining buyable by the general public. Yes, I could have written that a little clearer, but my mind is a little tired right now. I hope it makes sense to other people.

Dude, there's been new console speculation since 2010. At the moment, neither Sony nor Microsoft seem to have any reason to want to build a new console other than new for the sake of new. I can't speak for Sony, but I know Microsoft is going hard with the whole Kinect thing as well as getting television streaming on the 360. They've put so much work into increasing the lifespan of the 360 that it just doesn't seem to make sense for them to release a new console.

I also feel like developers have yet to push the current generation to its limits, but that's just me. I distinctly remember how hard God of War 2 pushed my PS2 (granted, it was like 6 years old at the time), and I haven't had anything remotely close to that happen on my 360. I'll just believe it when I hear MS say it.

Psh. AMD is entering the 7000 series GPUs (granted, they're not too good right now) and Nvidia is gonna premier their 600 series cards soon. Microsoft, don't use the 6670, use something good like a 560 Ti (or a 6950). At least that can actually handle stuff.

I'm noticing a few good arguments from people saying that if rumors are true that Microsoft might be jumping the gun on releasing a new console first. I just don't see it that way...

    1. in today's technological age, it's actually better to be first to strike before your competitors i.e. the Ipad. Unlike when the Dreamcast came out, only to be swallowed up by the PS2 and their dominating sales, and overall more superior technology. Nowadays, since most technology is practically the same give or take a few specs, to be the first to do something right, all others after will be considered clones unless they can come with something much better at a better price.

    2. One thing Microsoft is good at is keeping quality products at a reasonable price. They've always remained ahead of Nintendo and Sony for no other reason except for the pricing of their consoles. Nintendo is the cheapest of the three, but also the most limited in features. Sony is an amazing console, but way too many consumers just couldn't get with their hefty price tag when the PS3 was originally released. So if Microsoft can come out the gates with a middle-of the- road price on the new console like they did with the 360, then they will get a great head start against the competition.

    3. Microsoft coming out first might just force Nintendo's and Sony's hand to finally release something new. If Microsoft is the only company on the market with a new console, that will place Nintendo and Sony officially in the last gen category. So the longer they wait to release something new, the longer Microsoft will be bringing in new console profits, with no competition during the predicted 2013 holiday season when it's supposed to be released.

Overall, I still feel like if the rumors are true then it's a good move on their part. Because if announced during this year's E3, they will be the only topic of discussion during the entire event. Because neither Nintendo or Sony will no new news except for more talk of the Vita and Wii U. Which we know all we need to know on both.

So long as it stays true that it will have all of that, and a Terabyte(maybe) worth of memory. That will be my Christmas gift, also no red rings.

I better not have to pay to play online.
And yes im cheap thats why the only reason i bother to pay for xbox live is for halo other wise ill just use my ps3. And of course this will be better than the wiiU nintendo is just not trying hard enough. I mean wiiU really? The coolest thing on there is the Zelda "Experience"

If its 6 times more powerful shouldn't they call it the Xbox 2160? Because its the Xbox 360 times 6?
