Mass Effect 3 Action Figures Could Be Bundled With DLC

Mass Effect 3

Here's an interesting bit of cross-promotion, assuming it's for real. I think we can all agree that Mass Effect 3 has transformed into something much larger than a video game franchise. There are books. Comics. An upcoming movie. And, most relevant to today's discussion, action figures. Product listings for the set of eight upcoming ME3 action figures at BigBadToyStore.com (via MCV) all contain an added note about bundled DLC.

"Each figure includes an in-pack card giving you access to downloadable in-game bonus content. Each figure contains different in-game content, exclusive to North American released product. Collect all 8 for the full experience!"

There's no further indication of how the DLC will work -- probably through your personal EA account, since platform-specific codes would require that three versions of each action figure be offered -- or what the content is. It could be anything from weapons/armor/tools to full-blown quest content. I've reached out to EA and will hopefully have some additional details to share soon.

I buy legal registered copies of my Mass Effect then get NO-CD patches. Sure it's not promoted but... I like to keep my actual game hardcopies stored away and safe. Nothing says love like opening a dusty two year old box and having inside a game you absolutely love in mint condition. I intend to play mass effect series now and then for years to come. I don't want to harm my disks.

I heard somewhere that the dlc is multiplayer only.

    The site has new blurb:

"This product contains a code that can be redeemed for bonus content for Mass Effect 3 multi-player that could include powerful weapons to take on the Reapers. The pack could also include character boosters, weapon modifications, and weapon upgrades to make your multi-player squad stronger. (Content applies to multi-player mode on PC and XBox only.) "

Looks as though the DLC will be for online only and will come in the forms mentioned.

This seems to be a pattern, when a game gets to be very big they offer merchandise for people to buy. I don't know about you guys, but I don't need a real world item to tell me that I like Mass Effect. The only thing I buy are the real DLC for Mass Effect. Can't believe that they are using this marketing method to make people buy more things for Mass Effect. I'm still getting the Game but not the toys that cost $5 to $15.

"has transformed into something much larger than a video game franchise" -- Which is extreeeeeemely unfortunate, really.

Chill out until all the facts are released. I'm just as excited about this game as everyone else. They already know this game is gonna be huge. Do you really think they will destroy themselves by doing something completely ridiculous with this stuff? And if it turns out to be a bad deal, show them how you feel with the lack of money you give them.

Something tells me the action figure DLC is going to be action figures for Shephard's cabin or something cosmetic and silly like that.

I find this so funny that people complain about this when we don't even know what kind of DLC it is. This is as simple as buy or don't buy. Plus it will most likely come out for download later on anyway. EA has to make money for Bioware to keep making awesome games. Does it suck? Ya sure. Is it going to stop? As long as they make money on it no way will it stop.

People really like to point out Activision's dlc as being something horrible but Capcom and EA are just as bad if not worse. Seriously, dlc packed with action figures, I don't even want to know what is next.

If its true, then screw that, unless it has a piece of armor to finish a full set then I won't get any. EA and Bioware, you guys are dicks.

My guess is that any bundled DLC with the action figures will be minimal and probably cosmetic. Costumes and skins and that sort of thing. I sincerely doubt there will be any significant or gameplay altering content to go with them. Guess we'll have to wait and see!

We really have to do something about dlc, I'm all for new missions down the road ala Gears 3 or Fallout, but store specific pre-order, toy buying DLC is a messed up thing to do.

Collect all 8 for the full experience? Man if this isn't the most blatant excuse to gouge people's wallets....

Hopefully the figures have some quality to them and are decently priced, less than $10 a piece. Probably may purchase the one that I consider the best looking or has the best DLC attached to it. They seem to be mimicking the brilliance that Skylander's Spyro did with real world toys that bring in content to play in the game; there is a market for that which amazes me.
