If you're a gamer, then there's a good chance that you're very much looking forward to the March 6 release of BioWare's trilogy-capping sci-fi RPG, Mass Effect 3. Console gamers only have to worry about inserting a disc and starting the game, but PC users will want to check out the game's newly revealed hardware requirements before spending any cash. Fortunately, the underlying technology powering the upcoming game hasn't changed much since the original. Which means that PC gamers are looking at a forgiving set of specs.
For the seven of you out there who are still running Windows XP, Mass Effect 3 supports that version of the OS (with Service Pack 3) and all subsequent ones. The minimum CPU requirement is a 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (or AMD equivalent) and the minimum GPU is a GeForce 7900 on the NVIDIA side and an ATI X1800 on the AMD side. The only catch: all PC versions of the game also require the use of Electronic Arts' digital distribution client, Origin. Hit the jump for the full set of minimum and recommended specs. Note that this info also applies to the upcoming PC demo, available on February 14.
Minimum Spec:
- OS - Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1, Win 7
- *Supported chipsets: NVIDIA 7900 or better; ATI X1800 or better. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 9300, 8500, 8400, and 8300 are below minimum system requirements, as are AMD/ATI Radeon HD3200, HD3300, and HD4350. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required.
- CPU - 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (equivalent AMD CPU)
- RAM - 1GB for XP / 2GB RAM for Vista/Win 7
- Disc Drive - 1x speed
- Hard Drive - 15 GB of free space
- Video - 256 MB* (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support)
- Sound - DirectX 9.0c compatible
- DirectX - DirectX 9.0c August 2009 (included)
Recommended Spec:
- OS - Windows XP SP3/Vista SP1, Win 7
- CPU - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (equivalent AMD CPU)
- RAM - 2GB for XP / 4GB RAM for Vista/Win 7
- Disc Drive - 1x speed
- Hard Drive - 15 GB of free space
- Video - AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB or greater, NVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512 MB or greater
- Sound - DirectX 9.0c compatible

well got crossfired Radeon saphire HD 5700 and 4 gb of ddr3 ram+AMD Phenom II x6 and an asus lightscribe+blueray player speed is 2x so ya my PC can handle most likely max specs
the reason for disk speed is you might have to have the disk in while you play the game som PC games are like(no streaming option) that and the disk speed will help ease the burden and make it run smoother also can help load times and ease burdern on the disk drive when playing or installing

G4 thinks this is quite reasonable? Maybe in 2005, most computers today should be able to met the recommended specs, I mean really, Intel Core 2 Duo and 2GB of RAM? You guys got to upgrade your PC gaming rigs, maybe then when you guys review multiplatform games, it's not always the Xbox version you review the game on.

I'm glad the specs are reasonable. Since I don't have a 360 I needed to play the PC version of Mass Effect 1, and I'm glad I'll be able to import my saved games from the first two rather than start a new profile on the PS3.

Damn I guess I'll be forced to buy this on PC because I want to import my saving from ME2. Oh well, at least the specs are reasonable.
IntelliMoo
Too bad the most UNreasonable PC spec is the requirement of origin. :/
creaper1
Yes Y include disc speed x1? They are all at least x1 speed!

Since Mass Effect 3 still uses the same engine from Mass Effect 1 the requirements are very similar. Sure BioWare has made some tweaks here and there, but it s still Unreal Engine 3 running Direct X 9b. That is why it can still run on Windows XP, because it s only Direct X 9b. I can safely say my PC absolutely dominates the recommended specs. A downside to all of this is Origin and lack of Direct X 11 features, but I will put up with it. Mainly because all of my save games are on my PC and because I am so excited to play this game!

Well, let's to see who does want to play this:
At 8 weeks back it currently has more PS3 preorders than Twisted Metal which is just 5 weeks out.
Well over 700,000 preorders just in North America.
Looking really good.

Nice to see I can still run most games on max settings with my 3 year old laptop. Just about the only thing I cant is Crysis. I think this says a lot about the engine they built for Mass Effect and how good it is. theyre able to deliver pretty impressive visuals with little improvement to the Engine and without raking us over the coals on system specs

Stop assuming I want to play this! I don't. There's too much better stuff coming.

So basically, the same as the original ME from 5 years ago?

Disk drive? Why do we need disk drive speed?
