Real-life treasure hunters will soon have the chance to put their skills to the test and embark of epic adventures inspired by Crystal Dynamics’ gritty reboot Tomb Raider. It’s part of a newly announced partnership between the developer and Groundspeak, the company behind Geocaching.com, the self-described “world’s largest location-based outdoor recreation portal.”
“We are truly excited to be working on a series of exclusive gaming initiatives with Groundspeak,” said Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics global brand director Karl Stewart. “As a longtime fan of Geocaching, it’s the perfect fit for Tomb Raider and to be able to create a series of worldwide Geocaching treasure hunts for Tomb Raider is going to be a lot of fun.”
It isn’t exactly clear what these adventures will entail, but they will evidently be a mix of Geocaching.com’s standard treasure hunting elements and a photo-based project called Geocaching Challenges. So don’t expect to have to shoot dinosaurs while doing backflips (shuck!). Rather, at least based on the info on the Geocaching.com website, you’ll be using GPS devices, smartphones included, to track down a hidden package that contains something Tomb Raider-related. Not sure how many gamers will want to go hiking for swag, but it’s a clever cross promotional idea.
