This is kind of neat. We learned yesterday that the demo for 38 Studios' Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is coming to Xbox Live on January 17 in advance of its February 7 release. There will also be a Mass Effect 3 demo coming before Reckoning's release. Now Electronic Arts confirms that playing either one will unlock content in the other game.
The Reckoning demo will include a gameplay tutorial and a timed 45-minute jaunt through a section of the game's open world. Players will also be given the opportunity to create and customize a character. There's no release timeframe given for the ME3 demo, beyond the press release noting that, by playing it, "fans will unlock... items for Reckoning when the game launches on February 7," which suggests that said demo will arrive BEFORE the release date.
Check out the details for all of this unlockable content after the jump.
Polishing off the Reckoning demo and watching the trailer that plays at the end will unlock the following items in Mass Effect 3:
- Reckoner Knight Armor: This armor will maximize damage done in close-quarters combat while a beefed–up power cell feeds energy into weapon systems to increase projectile velocity.
- The Chakram Launcher: This weapon uses a fabricator to manufacture lightweight, explosive ammunition discs.
Install and play the Mass Effect 3 demo to unlock the following items in Reckoning:
- N7 Armor: Players can unlock special armor inspired by Commander Shepard’s iconic N7 battle armor including Helm, Cuirass, Gauntlets, Chausses and Greaves.
- Onmiblade Daggers: A holographic blade stemming from Commander Shepard’s Omni-Tool, the Omni-blade allows players to stab enemies in close combat.
As if that wasn't enough, be sure to tune into X-Play and G4tv.com on January 17 for some exclusive cross-promotional, genre-bending gameplay of the ME3 armor in action in Reckoning.

Sorry, I mean to wrap quotations around that quote from the official Kingdoms of Amalur forum:
"We can confirm that a demo for Reckoning is coming, and it will be on all platforms. We ll have all the details for you very soon!"
Madav
Apparently this doesn't apply to only XBL, it's just the author here neglected to mention other platforms.
We can confirm that a demo for Reckoning is coming, and it will be on all platforms. We ll have all the details for you very soon!

Do you have to be connected to Xbox Live while you play the demo? No high speed at home, I live in purgatory between high speed internet lines. I usually download and play games online at a friends house.
If I can play it offline and then connect and get my prize that will be cool. If not it's pointless for me to try.

Will this go for PSN/PS3 as well?
I like this and would much prefer this over all the pre-order and DLC nonsense.

Kind of cool. I mean I was late to the ME1 and DA:O Party so most of the DLC was available already (actually none of ME1's DLC was available until well after I played the game. Maybe I wasn't as late as I though).
Anyway I've been dissapointed with BiowEAre products so far. ME2 I didn't like as much as ME1 and it has alot to do with the loss of RPG Elements (ESPECIALLY the Level 30 Cap which is complete garbage especially if it was just so they could have level 30-60 in ME3).
Anyway ME2 had quite a bit of Launch DLC (Inferno Armour, Terminus Armour, Collector Armour and Weapon and Singularity Gun, Dr Pepper Armour Items) but it turns out it was all worthless. The Singularity gun (just like every Heavy Weapon gun that wasn't a Rocket or Grenade) was lackluster and required you to 'stand' in the open (in a game that requires you hide behind cover every second) to charge a weapon. The armour was garbage as well especially since if you had Collector Armour that's all you wore unless you really liked the look of the other armour.
So part of me believes this DLC for ME3 will be petty but what REALLY makes me feel this DLC is be garbage is DA2's plethora of Launch DLC (via Demos, FBook Likes, Video Views, Previous games, Fbook games) and the lack of use I found for those items.
I mean I understand that they are 'free' DLC and I'm not saying they should be game changing but when an item is only good the first level and then garbage after that then why even bother?...
I kind of want ME3 to get the Ubder Launch/Promo DLC that DA2 got because I do love collecting the DLC like some weird nerdy virtual collection but I don't want i to be all garbage.
I've said garbage too much.
With that said I've got my Collectors Edition of ME3 ordered and I'm some what excited for it. I've got it on like 6 day shipping because GameStop charges ten bucks or something or any other shipping. I can wait.

Maybe this means someday we'll get a game kinda like Gargoyles where technology and magic intersect.

I know Reckoning is the right name, but all this time I've been thinking of it is as Kingdoms of Amalur so this article was a wee bit confusing.

Always a fan of free in game content for checking out a demo or something like Dragon Age Legends. I do not plan to get KoA:R any time soon because my current backlog of games, so I hope the unlocked content is available when I eventually get a copy.
Flight_Eagle
That is REALLY COOL, especially because I'm getting both games anyway. Let's hope there is an option to remove the Helmet of special armors in Mass Effect 3. Spending all that time on my face in ME2 and walking around with it covered in dragon(or other) armor was kinda dumb. I mean, I can live with it, but it would still be cool to change.
BONERJAM
I'm not a fan of the Reckoning armor in ME3, it just doesn't fit IMO.
godzillaisyourdaddy
Now I have a very good reason to play the Reckoning demo, besides seeing if the game is good or not. Free content is worth the time.
doinyomama
I meant to say week not weak. It would be better if you don't pay any attention to me.
doinyomama
cant wait to play the demo next weak!!!
Zenjack
That's a pretty cool idea. I look forward to both games so it's a given that I'll play the demos especially with a little incentive thrown in.
bdemell
That's cool. The Knight Armor sounds like it will be a lot more useful than the Dragon Armor you could get in ME2. Hopefully both demos will come out on PSN soon as well.
Namzor
Is this XBL only? Cause I'm gonna be pissed if (A) there is no PC demo, or (B) this isn't being offered with the PC demo.
XxLockePSBxX
are they unlockable for the full game or the demo?
