In this Project Fiona preview, I was among the first people ever to get their hands on a new gaming form factor. At CES 2012, I got to play around with a working prototype for a new kind of gaming computer. Razer is calling it "Project Fiona," and it's a hybrid tablet and gaming PC.
As you can see from the video, Fiona looks like the unholy offspring of an iPad and a console. It has your by-now-standard touch screen, and all the tablet-y goodness that that implies, but also offers game controllers attached to the sides. You grip the handles of the device and employ the dual analog sticks and buttons, but the whole thing is portable, so you can play games on the bus. When I say "games," I don't mean Cut the Rope and Angry Birds. Unlike most existing tablets, Fiona is meant to play AAA PC games, right out of the box, that usually only show up on desktops or laptops. But there's oh so much more...including a Project Fiona photo gallery that you must see.
"This is the only tablet in the world designed specifically for PC gaming, explained Hilmar Hahn, an associate manager of project marketing at Razer, ""A lot of companies are coming out with tablets this year, but we believe there's not much innovation."
That innovation is not streaming games from a PC to a tablet. The tablet is powerful enough to run high-end PC games itself-- there's no emulation or porting. This is the real deal. For that, Razer had to make Fiona powerful.
How powerful? Check out the specs:
Intel® Core i7
10.1" 1280x800 display
Full-screen user interface supporting multi-touch
3-axis gyro, magnetometer, accelerometer
Force feedback
Dolby® 7.1 surround sound
WiFi 802.11b/g/n
Bluetooth® 3.0
Those numbers would be respectable for a desktop. But a desktop wouldn't have the gyros, magnetometer, accelerometer and touchscreen of a tablet. Should the gaming tablet take off, developers will have the option of adding movement and touch-specific content to their games, which could lead to very cool innovation.
I got my hands on Warhammer 40K: Space Marine for the device, and was very impressed. The game looks great - as you can see from the below shot from off the screen - and the controls will be immediately familiar to any console gamer. For a game running on a tablet, it ran very smoothly. I didn't notice any dropped frames or slow-down, even when the firefights got pretty hectic.

The device might look pretty heavy from the pictures, but it's actually lighter than you might think - it's no iPad, but, given the games you can play on it, it's more than light enough. I imagine the finish product will be slightly slicker looking and less blocky.
Project Fiona is just a prototype now, but Razer told me that they intend to listen to gamers feedback on the device, tweak the design a bit before release.
"Right now it's a concept device," explained Hahn, "We get feedback from the community, from the gamers themselves, and then we see what exact technology we can implement in the actual product, but we are intending to ship the product late this year. We'd like to ship it alongside Windows 8," Hahn said.
You might expect to pay out the nose for a thing like Fiona, but Razer quoted me a pretty reasonable price. "We believe we can ship this for under a thousand dollars," Hahn said.
I realize it's pretty early in the year to make a 2012 Christmas list, but I'm going to go ahead and add Fiona to the top of mine anyway.
What do you guys think? Leave your opinions of Fiona in our comment section if you get a chance. And don't miss the rest of our awesome CES 2012 coverage!

okkkk so its and ipad with two modified wii controllers? and around $1000? Are you kidding me?!? Just go to the store get an Xbox360 or a PS3! That thing looks cool but its not a console. I will stick to my consoles where I know I will have fun and not risk spending a bunch of money on something that will get all scratched up.
AWESOMEgamer875
I will stick to consoles any day compared to a 1/2lb piece of junk with two PS Move Navigation Controllers welded to it...

Assassins creed, Mw3, Skyrim, anything that isn't a console only game I prefer to play it on my gaming PC. It just seems faster and prettier. And even though I like the idea of having portable "Graphic intensive" games, I feel as though they're forgetting the most important part of PC gaming....CONTROL. The best part of playing any game on the PC is using the keyboard and mouse. It controls faster and gives you more options via hot-keying and macro setup. It's just ergonomically more sensible using 7 to 8 fingers simultaneously than being constrained to using only your two index fingers and your thumbs like you would with a controller. I would be shocked if you cant take the two boom sticks off the side just so you could have the option to use K&M. Besides, If I needed to have my long library of games I have through Steam with me at all times, I would invest in a Gaming laptop proper. This is a good idea, but limited in it's functionality. The only way I can justify the price of a gaming rig to anyone is because it can do A LOT more than just play games........this thing just plays games. It's a toy made for those who have cash to throw away. A cool toy......but a toy I'll pass on just the same.

I dont get the point... why not use the current tablets. Most of them accept the PS3 controller via Bluetooth, so why not just start making real game on those. I play the hell out of emulators on mine... just a thought

Since its still in concept mode maybe they'll make the controllers removable or have bluetooth/usb connectivity for say a PS3 controller. I have a Toshiba Thrive with OnLive on it and it s good enough for me.

There is a better model that was created from WikiPad Inc. that I read about. It looks pretty cool. It is a 3D glasses-free tablet with an attachable game controller.

They totally used the navi design from sonys move, but it does look effin sweet!

I was all excited until discovering that the controllers are actuall attached to the thing. How much of an idiot would someone look like pulling that out of their backpack while riding the bus or having coffee at starbucks??!! Portability is the name of the game people...There is nothing portable about that. You would have to be a die hard PC gamer to pick that one up...I'll pass. Cool concept, but I'll wait until the make a more user friendly design.

Looks like they took 2 wii remotes and stuck them on the sides.
i wouldn't be cought dead playing this thing in public, it looks retarded.
Gaming on a tablet should either be using the screen controls or using a xbox 360\PS3 controler.
I'd even accept some generic hybrid ps3\360 controller that they could sell for $10
sksknight1
What GPU does it have? Or equivalent comparison to at least. I dig the i7 and all but that's not as important as a nice Graphics processor when it comes to gaming. And why is everyone saying "just build a gaming PC"? Good luck hauling that thing around as easy as you would this. You're all missing the point on what makes a tablet a tablet: mobility. The controllers do need to be detachable though...
BallsofFURY
Ive been saying forever we need a portable that can take advantage of steam, I would rather it be more of a gaming handheld though, we just need steam for linux and a linux hack for ps vita with full gpu support = Ultimate Portable Gaming Device

If those controllers are attached you can forget it. If they are not then they had better make the insertion point very durable and not some cheap plastic slot. Also if they are NOT attached there should be a way to cover the 2 (4?) big gaping holes that will be there when they are not. As some one said, I am a little concerned about the shelf life of such a device. Will it still be viable for 2 or 3 years or will I have to 'upgrade' to the Fiona 2. Anything above $500 would not be viable for me.
twaddle
wait those things are attached? i thought they were just some wireless controllers like the wii remote or the move.....i may have to retract my previous statements about wanting to buy this....i need more specs like the memory hard drive space, ram usb ports. if it has bluetooth will i be able to hook up my controllers to it battery life, i need more info on the OS too.

Just get an android tablet and download the onlive app. It is a similar experience but much cheaper and available now. Plus onlive has a universal controller that works through blutooth or wired xbox controller through usb. Only downside is that wifi is necessary to stream games. Still better in than this overpriced tablet contraption my opinion.
SonyNmbrOneGuy
So its a tablet with two controllers attached?
Yeah...just take that money and buy a bad ass desktop for $700 and spend the rest on a Vita. I'd never spend that kind of money on a PC that can never be upgraded without buying Fiona 2...
arcticwolf00
This is what you get when you have a company that puts what the gamers want before straight innovation. Nintendo take notes because this is what the Wii U could have been.
TheReal0ne
there is no reason the buy this mite was well get a gaming lap top for the price
ArTex420
Eh, I'll pass on this. I already have a rocking computer. I mean 1000 bucks isn't bad for a price. To me, this is something to show off to your friends. It's like one of those things you just want to have, and then you keep it laying around and never use it. I don't see myself spending a lot of time playing my games on something like this. Good idea tho. Pass.

I'd buy this for home use for sure. I play a ton of Civ 5 and have been keeping my eyes open for a tablet that could play it comfortably on decent settings but never found anything suitable so I don't currently have a tablet except a black and white E-reader.
I assume that this would have all the functionality of a normal tablet as well? Like web browser, video playback, music player etc? Sounds like it if they are trying to release it with Windows 8.
The only thing I don't like about it are those controller wings at the side. I'd definitely get one either way, but I think they should make those wings detachable so it would be more like a regular tablet if your not gaming or playing something that wouldn't require them. I don't think I'd use the Controller wings unless I was playing an FPS or Third Person game and I usually play them on consoles. They don't look like they'd be too handy for web browsing etc. either.
