In this Project Fiona preview, I was among the first people ever to get their hands on a new gaming form factor. At CES 2012, I got to play around with a working prototype for a new kind of gaming computer. Razer is calling it "Project Fiona," and it's a hybrid tablet and gaming PC.
As you can see from the video, Fiona looks like the unholy offspring of an iPad and a console. It has your by-now-standard touch screen, and all the tablet-y goodness that that implies, but also offers game controllers attached to the sides. You grip the handles of the device and employ the dual analog sticks and buttons, but the whole thing is portable, so you can play games on the bus. When I say "games," I don't mean Cut the Rope and Angry Birds. Unlike most existing tablets, Fiona is meant to play AAA PC games, right out of the box, that usually only show up on desktops or laptops. But there's oh so much more...including a Project Fiona photo gallery that you must see.
"This is the only tablet in the world designed specifically for PC gaming, explained Hilmar Hahn, an associate manager of project marketing at Razer, ""A lot of companies are coming out with tablets this year, but we believe there's not much innovation."
That innovation is not streaming games from a PC to a tablet. The tablet is powerful enough to run high-end PC games itself-- there's no emulation or porting. This is the real deal. For that, Razer had to make Fiona powerful.
How powerful? Check out the specs:
Intel® Core i7
10.1" 1280x800 display
Full-screen user interface supporting multi-touch
3-axis gyro, magnetometer, accelerometer
Force feedback
Dolby® 7.1 surround sound
WiFi 802.11b/g/n
Bluetooth® 3.0
Those numbers would be respectable for a desktop. But a desktop wouldn't have the gyros, magnetometer, accelerometer and touchscreen of a tablet. Should the gaming tablet take off, developers will have the option of adding movement and touch-specific content to their games, which could lead to very cool innovation.
I got my hands on Warhammer 40K: Space Marine for the device, and was very impressed. The game looks great - as you can see from the below shot from off the screen - and the controls will be immediately familiar to any console gamer. For a game running on a tablet, it ran very smoothly. I didn't notice any dropped frames or slow-down, even when the firefights got pretty hectic.

The device might look pretty heavy from the pictures, but it's actually lighter than you might think - it's no iPad, but, given the games you can play on it, it's more than light enough. I imagine the finish product will be slightly slicker looking and less blocky.
Project Fiona is just a prototype now, but Razer told me that they intend to listen to gamers feedback on the device, tweak the design a bit before release.
"Right now it's a concept device," explained Hahn, "We get feedback from the community, from the gamers themselves, and then we see what exact technology we can implement in the actual product, but we are intending to ship the product late this year. We'd like to ship it alongside Windows 8," Hahn said.
You might expect to pay out the nose for a thing like Fiona, but Razer quoted me a pretty reasonable price. "We believe we can ship this for under a thousand dollars," Hahn said.
I realize it's pretty early in the year to make a 2012 Christmas list, but I'm going to go ahead and add Fiona to the top of mine anyway.
What do you guys think? Leave your opinions of Fiona in our comment section if you get a chance. And don't miss the rest of our awesome CES 2012 coverage!

I may be the only one who likes this, I mean yeah itll be around a $1000. but thats not really expensive for a computer of any sort in this market nowadays, I would like to know what kinda GPU it has, but it seems really cool. Im a controller fan myself so this would be great, there are some questions still like, battery life, USB support for keyboard/mouse, HD memory, RAM, DVD/Blu-Ray support. We will see when theres more info on it.

this is cool i cant wait and for every one saying its gonna be 1000 razor said there gonna put in under the 1000 dollars price if u read

Not trying to step on anyones shoes, or ruin the nerd fapping over this, however the controller inputs are almost comical in how much they infringe on the PS3 move navigation controller. I can't believe razor would actually attempt this, when they are obvious ripoffs. I mean come on, the backside trigger buttons are 100% identical, and the center ps logo button is also there, not to mention the jsticks location. Add the 4 face buttons from the move motion wand and you have just recreated the controller using 100% patented hardware. I can't wait for the lawsuit to smack razer in the face. XD

yea i dont want to hold my screen while playing games for long periods. so this wouldnt be worth the money as i would only use it when im on the road.

Creo que estoy algo confundido... a simple vista parece un Wii U

At its screen rez 1280x800 it should be able to handle games for a few years.

I think it comes down to MMOs and online multiplayer 3DS and Vita cannot do that and "console only" players cannot play WoW or SWTOR or Starcraft(might not have the controls for starcraft though)
I am a console only player but I am definitely not going to dish out $1000 to pay a monthly fee to play a MMO so I kind of kill my own argument

I like how people try to down play the the PS Vita by saying it costs too much at $250, but this tablet here is going to cost something like $1000. Unless you like playing warhammer a lot, I don't think this tablet will have the games to support it either. How many PC games are going to support the dual analog stick and button layout of this device?

At first glance this thing looks awesome. A portable pc with controllers, and access to all of your pc games. If it is just a prototype I have some suggestions. Move the controllers so they are against the tablet, and make them more ergonomic like ps/xbox controllers.
Also, why is it so hard to post on this site, or read replies?

If this tablet will be capable of running any current pc game, I would choose it over Vita just because of the selection of games.

can this be upgraded? if not it wont be able to handle the newer games coming out in like 2 -3 years after its released so what would be the point of spending a 1000$ on something that will be a obsolete after owning it for only like a couple years
crocodilius
Did steve really just compare that "thing" to my desktop?
first of all, though it may have an i7 i doubt it has 16g RAM.
second of ALL, it's not upgradeable, which makes it obsolete
as a "computer product" unless people are stupid enough
to buy one every 3 years, and hey i wouldnt put it past them.
(also: battery life)
gtosullivan117
Fiona or Vita? It all depends on battery life
wigglyevil
i want one

idk anything other then what was shown on here but wouldn't you figure if its ment to be a portable PC that you could use it for just about anything? People seem to think that you would have to get games for this, it sounds like you could play normal PC games on it, not to mention if its going to have windows 8 on it couldn't you just mod emulators and such on it, that would expand its gaming library
GunGameGansta
Somthing like this would have premire with a big name game, somthing super popular to even get a foot-hold in the gaming market.

Metalhead980
It looks awesome.
But one thousand dollars for a product that will hardly run anything in two years simply isn't worth it.
