According to a report from Nikkei, Kazuo Hirai is about to be named the President of Sony. Howard Stinger would continue to act as CEO and Chairman. Rumor has it Hirai will take over as soon as this April. Hirai is currently the Executive Deputy President.
I assume Kaz (we're on a first syllable basis) is so psyched about his promotion he's going to gift everyone a copy of Ridge Racer. That joke is still funny, right?

@magos2k7 "The PS3 has been locked firmly in 3rd place since day one"
Hmmmm. well, when millions of people have to go through multiple Xbox's do to RROD that can help a wee bit.... couple that with the year head start. Sony is where the quality is and the games.

Bring back Kutaragi.

we all new that playstation is better than nintendo, no matter how much we loved it. i have a feelin, that with the new president, sony will become a better "nintendo" than nintendo ever was. the gaming business is leading toward sony. nintendo fans, like myself, are growing up and a lot of xbox fans are converting over to playstation. props to sony for finally taking over. us loyal fans of nintendo will soon be gone, as will the xbox fans.

Does this directly effect Sony Computer Entertainment?

Kaz Hirai, a.k.a. Mr. Microtransaction. His influence was immediately--and negatively--realized by PlayStation owners the moment Kutaragi-san left. He is not "fresh blood" at all. This is, in fact, Sony doubling-down on the same leadership that brought us firmware 3.0; removal of Linux, backward compatibility, and other features from PS3; the PSP Go; and the Great PSN Outage of '11.
Mr. Hirai should have been given his walking papers 1-2 years ago. Does not bode well for PlayStation users.

Yeah, a $600 price tag for a console, a crab, and a memory of a classic racer. Considering the iphone launches at $500 and etc.. you wonder how so many people became haters. Plus, this guy has been in the spot light just like Jack Tretton. He's just what they need for the PS Vita launch in NA. Plus, you consider the next gen consoles are probably going to hit that +400$ mark either way, Sony managing their whole company with a man who has experience with public speaking sounds like a good idea.

Sony is in crisis. A change in leadership is exactly what they need to bring them back.

Let's see what he can do before making wild accusations and presumptions in the from of rambling walls of text, I suspect you are in no position to be casting despersions on the character of others, think before you are so cavalier with you ignorance.

Playstation consumers lost its freedom to customize ("hack") our systems, lowered the downloadable content sharing from 5 playstations to 2 playstations, and lost there current Sony President... I think the Japanese are up to no good...
magos2k7
I like this guy, but I don't like him. Like much of the upper echelon at Sony, he makes loud, childish comments and ends up eating his words. Remember when the PS3 launched, and he said "The next generation doesn't start until WE say it does"..? The PS3 has been locked firmly in 3rd place since day one. Or how about when he was asked if he could have an Xbox 360 exclusive, which would he take? Kaz said "None." This kind of redneck rhetoric may have played well during Sony's "Hey plummer boy!!" days, but it's time for Sony to grow up a bit, stop acting like rednecks and just focus on their systems and their games. I hear their PS Vita is sucking wind in Japan already. I'm sure he'll have something loud and stupid to say about that. And aside from the fact that he apologized and bowed (a serious sign of humility in Japan) when Sony's security was breached, I have to ask where he was BEFORE that became a problem. Probably writing some loud, stupid, arrogant speech about how "cool" Sony is. Do yourself and your company a favor, Kaz. Grow up and change your tone. 3rd place is nothing to be arrogant about. The PS2 days are over.

"joke" wasn't funny when it started really
rikkuster
Sure, Nikole, the joke is still "funny" :P
lucidity
Not surprising as management shakeups are common for companies that fail to meet expectations.

Wow that joke is so old. Hope this means that more of an investment will be made with future Playstation products when he takes the reigns as president of Sony. I wish him well, and hope there's less "Ridgggeee Raceerrrrrrr!!!" moments.
