Modern Warfare 3's Official Banhammer Looks Like This

Modern Warfare 3's Official Online Code Of Conduct Posted

UPDATE: Afternoon, all. It seems I made a bit of a boo-boo this morning in my post wake-up haze. The code of conduct was actually posted months ago; the news is really the above image, which is what Infinity Ward's "banhammer" software looks like, as shared by Robert Bowling on Twitter. You have my apologies for the error. I'm going to go ahead and blame the Nazis, because video games have taught me to do so.

ORIGINAL POST: Activision's Call of Duty developers have never been shy about denying players access to the online portion of the game when they act like jerks, by cheating, boosting, hacking or being just plain, old meanies. Those bans are actually governed by a set of internally established guidelines, which Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling shared in a post to the Call of Duty forums earlier today.

The Modern Warfare 3 Online Code of Conduct breaks possible offenses down into six separate categories: Boosting, Cheating, Glitching, Hacking, Offensive Behavior and Offensive Gamertag. Offending players risk incurring anything from a stats reset to a leaderboard or multiplayer ban. Some categories have an escalating series of punishments for first, second and third offenses. Hacking is not tolerated at all, however; any confirmed hacker will have his or her console immediately and permanently banned.

But hey, I'll make this real easy. Don't cheat, don't be an ass. Then you won't have to worry about any of this!

I think it's a great thing that they are banning people. At least IW cares enough to make sure the leaderboards aren't completely false.

OR... OR ... they could have just made the game good ... and allow the dedicated servers WHICH MAKE THEM MONEY ... to be ranked... instead they have to be flags and force us to use that crappy matchmaking. Maybe we want to play more than 9-9 ?? Maybe we who purchase the f'n game WANT to be able to play WHATEVER MAP we want on WHATEVER GAME MODE WE WANT. CoD 4 was the last good CoD ... they'll get not another dime from me... and watch MW4 fail ... they put NO effort into this game it's incredibly boring. I feel betrayed as a supporter since the first CoD.

I find it really worrying that there are so many people are up in arms about this. Cheating, in any sense, is something that ruins the experience for the players who either don't wish to or don't have the chops to figure it out. Now, I agree that the devs shouldn't ship a game with exploitable glitches, but heck, last time I checked, exploiting something for your benefit and to the detriment of others was considered a bad thing. It also show lack of raw talent with the game play. It does show talent in exploitation and creating a unfair advantage, but not in playing the game.

As for the offensive language, I have a story to share:

When I had an Xbox, I was playing Black Ops and killed an opponent a number of times. Now, I am by no means a good FPS player, average maybe, but my K/D is not in the positive, so me getting more than three kills before I die is a feat of magic. This guy took such offense to me killing him, that he started slinging every single slur n the book at me: racist, sexist, homophobic, it didn't matter. I tried to calm him, seeing as I don't like offensive myself, I did it as nicely as possible. It didn't matter though because he just kept going. I got sick of it and muted him. When he realized it, he started flooding my inbox with nasty messages.

Now even though this is an extreme I had a lot of nasty things said to me in derogatory manner. I think that something should be done to an extent.

I think that people just need to learn to be understanding of others. There are ways to brag online other than trying to take someone down a notch. That just show a lack of maturity. It also makes the people outside of the gaming community look at us gamers as nothing but immature. I guess this was just meant as a "think before you speak" kind of thing.

I don't understand why this is getting people's panties in a twist. I don't cheat, hack, boost or glitch. I probably couldn't even if my life depended on it. I chose not to represent myself in my gamertag with references to sexual acts or racism. And the occasional time I do put on my mic, I don't immediately begin using racial slurs, talking about someone's mother in unfortunate situations, or questioning someone's sexual orientation. I'm pretty sure that most of these, if not all of them in fact, are easy to not do and still enjoy playing a simple little game like Call of Duty.
So it stands to reason that if this does get your panties in a twist, then you are guilty of one of the infractions listed. And I have to say that I hope you get banned.
There's no need to cheat just to enjoy playing this stupid little FPS. Who cares if you you're at the top of the leader board when its not legit? So what if you got to 10th prestige the fastest if how you got it was sitting in a corner repeatedly killing your friend and ruining the game for the rest of the players with your ill-gotten killstreaks. And people need to learn that if using terms like n^@#$r or f*g aren't acceptable in society, then what on earth makes you think that using those terms to people you don't even know is acceptable? I don't play a game so that people can call me a f#$%t or whatever after I beat them. People need to grow up, realize its just a game, and try and conduct themselves with at least an ounce of self respect.
PS-TYPING IN ALL CAPS DOES NOT MAKE YOUR ARGUMENT STRONGER.

the only thing this game needs is skill level matchmaking like Halo: Reach did. All Problems = Solved. Glitch can have epic 40 kill ground war games while average people can enjoy themselves and the twelve year olds can play with the other low skill level players.

You know what I love? When I get a 2 week ban for cheating because I have a fast trigger finger on my semi-auto. Ya, this system works. 1 kid gets pissed when I'm faster than him and I get punished for it. Great.

This "Code of Conduct" is a bit ridiculous. I can agree that hackers/cheaters should get banned from the game. No argument here, if you try to use external code or hardware to gain an advantage then you should be banned. Glitching/Boosting on the other hand, should not result in a ban. Sorry but as a programmer it is not the players fault for the crappy programming error that got released in the game. It is a legit strategy. Don't get me wrong here, I don't do this and it does annoy me to no end but if you can do it in the game without it being hacking then it is part of the game and is strategy.

Now for the offensive behavior/GT, I have a lot of disagreements with this. First off, you can't ban people for offensive things because they don't define what is offensive and you can't just let everything be treated as offensive. Second, banning people for offensive gamer tags is ridiculous because it isn't your job to do so, it is Microsoft's because it is there policy. Thirdly, this game is rated M for mature not T for teen or lower but M and before I see it again I know there is no rating for online play. Well let me give you a little insight since you have to be 17 or older to buy an M rated game you can't play it online unless you are 17 or older or perhaps with parents approval but then they should know better. It is rated M, meaning blood, gore, adult situations, adult language, etc. If you can't take the trash talking there are many ways to stop it before it hits your ears. Microsoft provide a way so that you can only hear your friends or party. CoD provides a way to mute players. So there is no reason to ban people for offensive language or behavior. If you don't like how someone is playing then after the game go and select avoid playing with this person. It shouldn't be a bannable thing to trash talk in a FPS.

These are my thoughts on the subject. You may or may not agree but it doesn't matter. All I know is if I get banned for trash talking in a game I paid for along with their ELITE service then they can guarantee that I won't purchase another game from them and I'll convince my friends the likewise.

I just got called racist for corner trapping on cod..... how stupid can that community get?

Call of duty has a simple concept. everybody tries to be better than everyone else and for many, many players that means taking short cuts. So instead of joining that childish group who takes things way to serious i would rather mess about and have fun on cod.

Also if you don't think kids take cod to seriously i have about 40 abusive messages from cod players since the release of mw3. some of them are about my mother, some being extremely racist and homophobic and some that just call me every name in the book.

So if you really take cod seriously than you probably are part of that group of kids who wont stop swearing and probably shouldn't play games.

I just find it sad that the CoD community is bad enough that IW needs to crack down that bad.

How about shipping a game that makes it nearly impossible to cheat like almost every other dev team has seemed to manage to do the past few years?

IW is terrible when it comes to this stuff. Cheating/boosting was huge in MW2 and is still bad in MW3.

But when I was playing Black Ops I didn't see any of this stuff happening.

IW aka the most overrated Dev team in existance should ban themselves for being as lazy as they are year in and year out.

That prestige token glitch has already ruined the leaderboards, the damage is already done. I'm amazed how they did not catch that one in development. In my opinion worse than any gameplay glitch the COD series has had.

way to take my freedom of speech from me in the virtual world!!! The game is rated MATURE... so if your going to be a little sissy about trash talking or seeing a name that offends you get the hell out of the gaming world. There is a mute control!!!!
