All the awards shows and fan polls in the world can tell you one thing, but video game rental service GameFly offers what is perhaps one of the best barometers for what actual people were actually playing over the course of a given year. Today the company releases its top 10 GameQ lists for 2011, with the rankings based on how frequently each title appeared in users' "I want to rent this next" lineup.
The top-requested game across all platforms is WB Games' Batman: Arkham City, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Dead Island in the two and three spots, respectively. Skyrim, G4's own Game of the Year, is ranked seventh, likely because anyone who wanted it recognized the timesink involved and just bought the thing. Arkham is also the top game on the Xbox 360 list, but it's number two on the PlayStation 3 list, behind Uncharted 3 (of course).
Hit the jump for the full platform-by-platform breakdown, also including GameQ rankings for the Wii, 3DS and DS platforms.

So I can see that Arkham City's obnoxious online pass for offline content really paid off for them.
(Disclaimer: I loved Arkham City and bought it new, but the whole Catwoman set-up is asinine.)
jediapprentice
I call on G4 to ban fanboys, trolls and all other mental defectives from this site. It's really getting out of hand, you don't want your site to become the video game equivalent of Yahoo!.
phillyguerrilla
Gears of War 3 is the only system exclusive game that made the Top Ten list for cross platform games. That speaks volumes!
Hyphnip
Am I the only one who wishes lucidity and Liquid Swords would shut up? Jesus, who cares which console you like better? PS3 and 360 both have their good points and their faults!
cloudMAN75
lol no psp?
lucidity
I prefer the highly rated games:
Gears of War 3
Forza 4
Halo Anniversary
as well as the highly rated games that run better on the 360 ( in some cases, Skyrim, after a point they barely run at all on the PS3)
MW3
Skyrim
Rage
etc
Keep the shovelware:
Dance Star Party
Tomb Raider trilogy
White Knight Chronicles 2
NBA 2K12
Ridge racer 7
DC Universe Online
and all the Move titles
Liquid Swords
You heard it folks. According to Lucidity, the Xbox had nothing but shovelware this year except for 2 games.
lucidity
That's all shovelwear, unlike your list of "must haves for 2011".
You can add LBP2 and KZ3 as they came out half a year before Forza and arn't far ahead.
Still waiting for your 2011 must haves:
Agent
Twisted Metal
The Last Guardian
FF Versus
Liquid Swords
You also forgot:
Gunstringer
Rise of Nightmares
Liquid Swords
You forgot:
The Last Templar
Kinect Sports Season 2
Disneyland Kinect
Sesame Street kinect
Michael Phelps Push the Limit
Hulk Hogan's Main event
Kinectimals Now With Bears
BlackWater
Raving Rabids Alive and Kicking
Motionsports Adrenaline
Self Defense training camp
jungan
I got Arkham City for free when I built by new gaming PC and I still haven't installed it, thanks SWTOR and Skyrim!
elgranconde
Skyrim has more glitches than having Missingno as your starting Pokemon
lucidity
Then given your statement, other "no buys" from 2011 would include:
SOCOM 4
Resistance 3
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Yakuza 4
Infamous 2
ICO
MLB 2
just to name a few from your "must buy 2011" list.
BONERJAM
I don't use Gamefly but I can tell you the last two weeks have been dominated by Arkham City at my house.
Liquid Swords
"One does not simply rent Forza 4"
True, but judging by sales one does not simply buy it either.
Uncharted 3 has won GOTY awards. Research before speaking next time.
ChomskyKnows
idiotic metric since games that came out earlier in the year would have an obvious advantage over those that came out later, and Batman obviously came out earlier than Skyrim...best barometer? that's dumb.
plus, everyone knows RPGs, especially and including those by Bethesda are mammoth affairs, therefore renting one seems dumb since it will take many ppl months to get through...
dumb
EspenUlv
This is so retarded it's not even funny.. MW3 as #2? Really?
lucidity
One does not simply rent Forza 4
One would barely scratch the surface.
Where are the Halo killers, R# and KZ3?
Liquid Swords
The PS3 had an exclusive at #1.
Where was the GT5 killer, Forza 4?
lucidity
@Lynxan
Gears of War was so popular it transcended to the multiplatform list.
In other words, it had sufficient numbers.
