Here's the rumor: Ninteno's Wii U, which should be coming sometime this year, will feature an online app store that offers more than just games. The Daily reports via an unnamed source that some apps will live on the console while others will be meant for the tablet-like control device.
No other details were provided, but the basic fact of the Wii U including some kind of app store seems like a no-brainer. Consoles are already jam-packed with content-adding apps of various types, and the Wii U's tablet controller offers some unique opportunities that wouldn't otherwise fit on an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
It's tough to put any stock in a rumor, but this one holds more water than most simply for making complete and total sense. Is it true? We'll find out later this year.

My only worry is that they will continue how they have been working with downloaded games. Since the Wii, I've been avoiding there downloaded games, not because of the games them self, but because when it started they didn't seem to have an easy way to move to a new system if the one I'm using breaks. In the last couple of years I had started to think that I might had been a bit too worried about this until I got a 3DS when it came out, I had gotten the ambassador games and after a few weeks the system was stolen. Thanks to the lighter price I would had considered replacing it sooner if I could had gotten the second ten games (most of witch I'd not played before and was looking foreword to) to look foreword to but now... well, I'm just not as into the idea. Looks like whoever had decided to take it will be enjoying the new games and I'll be completely left out.

Well given the fact that the Wii U is a tablet for the most part, it'll only make sense that they would offer an app store for it, so the consumer will have some use for it other then an oversized Wii remote. Looking at the design of the controller, it would be cool to see some retro Nintendo games on there which is something none of the the other tablets will offer. They all have emulators, but to have official old school Nintendo games on the Wii U controller would be pretty awesome.

I think that will be cool. I don't know about having 10 games come out every month. That could get a little much, but it sounds cool. At first, I thought this would be an odd route for Nintendo, but then I thought, Nintendo owned the motion gaming, and now they are doing this, so it will be good. Props, Nintendo. And to everyone that thinks the console controller will cost $200+ or something outrageous like that, I garuntee you the most it will cost is $120 and that is pushing it big time. I mean, its just a controller with a little 6inch touchscreen with much less technology than the 3DS and that is basically $160.

Well considering the Wii had non game apps, and same with the 3DS it really doesn't come as a surprise. Especially when you go back to realizing the controller is basically a tablet.
What Nintendo should is is invest in their own version of XNA, and make it seamless to port tablet/phone games.

Sounds like Nintendo is just trying to merge mobile gaming with console gaming... and I don't like the taste of it

Unless this thing has a 300 game library right from the start and a promise of at least 10 games released per month, every month, R.I.P. Nintendo.....

I am still a bit skeptical of the Wii U but I was also skeptical of the Wii when it was first announced. I eventually bought one and enjoyed it and it went on to sell millions. So I will wait and see what happens. Not surprised if this rumors turn out to be true. I would kind of expect it.

It would be pretty cool to watch Netflix on the controller.
