Here's something that I'm guessing none of you expected. Gears of War 3, Epic Games' trilogy-capping shooter that was released on September 20, now has an Xbox Live demo. The free download is only available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers, offering a taste of the game by way of the early "Shipwreck" level.
I kinda feel like anyone who was going to play Gears 3 already has, what with it being the first marquee sequel released this holiday season. But hey, it's a kickass game and you should definitely play it if you haven't. The demo ought to convince anyone who might still be on the fence, though a BETTER demo would have been a single-map taste of Horde 2.0. Just saying.
Also, yes. This is a slow week for news.

I plan on buying Gears 3, as soon as there's a REALLY cheap copy on eBay.
After the "Strategic Shift" they pulled I don't want to support Microsoft/Epic with my money.

I have wanted to play Gears 3 for quite some time now and I haven't been able to, due to being a broke college student. Please don't assume things people. This demo is great news.

I'm pretty sure that anyone that wanted to play Gears 3 already has.

I bought the first two Gears and enjoyed them a lot but i wasn't compelled to give the third a chance when it launched. Still, i will play it down the line and i won't download this demo because when i finally do get my hands on it i want to play it from beginning to end not just one level. It would be like finding a chest full of treasure and only taken one gold coin.

Demos can be a great marketing tool. I first bought Max Payne (quite sometime after the release I believe) after playing the Demo on PC after finding it on a Free Game Download Site (It was a basic site that just linked you to games and game demos. Nothing fancy)
Love Max Payne to this day.
I got Fable 2 (and alter 3) based on the 'Free Episode 1/Demo' on XBL. I got into a few Star Trek PC games because of Demos.
But then there are games like Mafia 2 that have a nice good Demo and then the game turns out to be garbage.
I bought Mafia 2 purely on the Demo and I regret it.
Anyway if you are a gears fan you've either got GoW3 already or are waiting for it to drop to 20 Bucks. Unless GoW3 is going on the Games OnDemand soon I don't see a reason for this.
I'm not a gears fan. I finally bought GoW1 about 9 months ago just to see what it's about and I haven't finished it yet. I'm sure I will, but I've been busy and GoW isn't a game that is in my taste. I'm very picky about monsters, demons, aliens and other things that are a little further out of the realm of reality and GoW is just a game I haven't gotten into. At least yet.

Great game.

Any achievements or unlockables attached to it?

It's a demo people. It's not supposed to be meant for anything except to be an interactive advertisment of the game. If you've never played it before, then here's your chance to give it a go, and see how you feel about purchasing the full game.
Companies still release demos for no other reason except for that one. I can only assume that Gears of War 3 took so long to come out with a demo, becasue it would've defeated the purpose of the big beta campaign they ran to sell more copies of Bulletstorm. Why release a demo, when the multiplayer beta was being played by so many people who were actually true fans of the game?
Now those who may be looking for a new game to play, and still may be on the fence about Gears of War 3 might actually enjoy being able to play the demo and see first hand what all the fuss was about over this game. My older brother is a big fan of the Gears Franchise, but he never got around to playing Gears 3, more less even seen what it even looks like because of his new baby and his job. So he was really excited when he called me and told me that there was a demo.

Dang, when I saw the headline I was hoping it might be an online multiplayer demo like Halo: Reach. I pop onto the Halo: Reach demo once a week or so, since I don't own the game anymore and it's a great way to play for free. Only one map but if you only play once in a while, it's great.

I played half the campaign with my buddy before we both got bored and quit, horde mode was pretty fun though.

I think companies don't release demos anymore before games come out is because they think its going to affect their sales. Not a problem for me as I don't buy games I'm not completely sold on before trying them which means they won't be getting my money anyway. Releasing the game demo a month after the game comes out is just stupid. Everyone that wanted the game bought it already and everyone else probably doesn't care enough to buy it.

The xbox demo selection is horrible. Thanks for releasing demos months after their release. :D
