I've developed a serious problem over the last two weeks. I'm normally the sort of gamer who can sit down and have fun just picking any old title out of the stack. I have my favorites, sure, but I appreciate having a varied gaming diet. Star Wars: The Old Republic has completely destroyed that, as it probably has for many of you.
The number certainly support it, as we learn today with the release of a set of stats and figures on the game's official website. Collectively, we've poured more than 60 million hours into The Old Republic, which is apparently the rough equivalent of watching all six Star Wars movies 4 million times. It also seems that folks are more into being Sith than Jedi Knights, with more than 850,000 embracing the Dark Side vs. 810,000 fighting among the Republic's Jedi.
As for the rest of it: together, we've all completed a total of 260 million quests, participated in 44 million PvP battles, fought in nine million space combat missions and killed a whopping *three billion* NPCs. In the words of a certain Sith Lord, most impressive.

People almost always want to be the 'bad' guy so they can express themselves in a way our society prevents unless we want to go to prison. Its almost kind of like the Rebels are a partisan group fighting against the Nazi's... most people on the Axis side felt what they were doing was right.
Any way you look at it, sides will always be un-equal, a better subject would have been age range for players. I've met a lot of people my age (30), on the Republic side, and most of the people I met on Imperial were 18 or younger. Personally, I like having a guild to pvp and run ops with that doesn't have a 8pm bedtime or 20 minute mom aggro to do dishes.

i got this game with 2 months play for xmas, but i have to wait for italian christmas to get my alienware. so i had a question. i dont understand the moral alignment thing. this is my first mmorpg. ive played games with karma like fallout, and games like bioshock which your decisions effect outcome. some people are saying you can be a bad jedi or a good sith? how so? ive always wanted to pull a darth vader and kill jedi then switch sides backstabbing the sith :)

No news there, teenagers always feel the lure of the evil/dark side, even when they are just misunderstood (a la Horde in WoW) Freeps in EQ, or Destro in WAR, not counting Defiant in Rift, always the "evil" side has more people, thats why when i roll on pvp MMOs i always choose the good side, cause i love the underdogs.

Proud Jedi Defender, Light Side.

This really isn't all that surprising to me. From the trailers, the Dark Side looked more awesome, stronger, more fierce... cooler. As long as the "good guys" look so lame next to the "bad guys," people will want to be bad guys more often.

The Darkside will win in this world, and the next!!!
Such is true with real life as well...

You know some how I'm not surprised by the gap..

Guys you have to remember, that that is Sith "WARRIORS" vs Jedi "Knights" that is only 2 classes, that doesnt include the other 6 classes
UNrealx007
really only by forty thousand!? i was thinking like a million siths to hundred thousand not forty. Dumb article.

My favorite thing about playing the light side is that you have to make difficult choices. Being sith/evil/bad is easy. You can make selfish choices, you can hurt or kill people, and it all fits in. Your path is very predictable and easy.
Not so on the light side. Good choices aren't meant to be easy, they aren't straightforward, and you have to make compromises. Not much is clear cut paragon, and I think that is awesome. I'm playing a trooper, and I think the paragon/renegade decisions have been my favorite part of the game so far. I've sat at conversation options for minutes trying to decide how I should handle them. I'm not trying to play as pure Paragon, instead I'm making the decision that seems "right" to me, and sometimes it's a Renegade decision. It's made the game far more immersive than anything I've played in a long time, and I'm really enjoying it.

It is obvious in beta that the game developers loved the Republic as well. They did almost nothing to help the Sith especially in Dark side points.. The game is basically Republic and Republic/Dark since there are very little true dark options.. unless you think embezzlement, murder, theft, slander, perjury and law breaking to be somehow "dark" points. It's like the developers really wanted to do the Republic part and were forced to the dark stuff as punishment. Out of the dozens I know personally who tested the game in beta.. only the Republic pre-ordered and are very happy with their decision. The Republic/Dark characters all either canceled their pre-orders or never pre-ordered to begin with. The lone few who did buy it stopped playing after only a few days. If it isn't a straight Paragon/Renegade.. why bother doing the game in the first place? Call it Republic Wars and get it over with.

This should surprise absolutely zero people. Who was the most popular character in the original trilogy? Darth Vader. People only like the Jedi because they can use the force, no one ever grew up saying "I want to adhere to the Jedi code and have zero fun with my powers." Give me a break.

I play a Jedi Consular and so far I am very pleased with the time I am having a wonderful time with it. Even though people may enjoy playing sith more, I like my Jedi just fine! Of course I will also play sith to check out the story and everything, in fact hopefully I will get a chance to play all classes and get there story!

I love the game and will be rolling on both. Faction fanboys aren't what matter, it's what alignment you choose Dark side or Light Side. For the Darkside ;)

You know I have to really disagree. I really think that being a Jedi is a lot of fun. I got the game for Christmas and haven't stopped playing it. Granted I will also create a Sith character to experience that as well, but I really think the Jedi story and missions are pretty awesome. Good job, Bioware.

I am Jedi but I am Dark Side (moral alignment); I sense a flaw in these numbers...
