Alan Wake's American Nightmare was officially revealed over the weekend, but the facts -- episodic release on Xbox Live Arcade -- weren't really anything that we hadn't already heard. More details are floating around today, thanks to a heft preview from Xbox World magazine (via CVG).

Wake's search for his evil doppelganger Mr. Scratch in American Nightmare unfolds around a central hub that players will return to frequently. There's apparently more of an action focus to the game as well. The light-based combat remains fundamentally the same, but new enemy tactics ought to mix things up, as will new weapons like the darkness-piercing crossbow and a variety of more garden variety automatic weapons.

This shift toward a more action-oriented gameplay experience is a big source of the inspiration behind the game's new Fight 'Til Dawn mode, Remedy reveals. All we know for now is that it's a wave-based survival mode. No, that's not a lot. Expect to hear more soon though, what with the game's planned early 2012 release.

Games with an online multiplayer component, such as TDM or a simple co-op mode attached to a game franchise that focuses more on the single-player experience, diminishes the franchise as a whole in the long run. I understand that developers, and/or publishers, want to broaden their portfolio, or to battle used game sales, to garner more revenue. (a blight that has cursed the gaming industry as of late) Unfortunately, with decisions like this the franchise will lose more players to the franchise than they would gaining new one's.

But with this said, I'll still play Alan Wake 2. Sadly, I just won't hold my breath on it being any good.

Alan Wake was such an underrated game with its original idea and story that was spooky. I am excited to dig deeper into Alan Wakes slip into insanity.

Wave based survival mode? More action oriented? No thanks. We play Alan Wake for the story and atmosphere, not the terribly mediocre gunplay. The episode in the main game with the rockstar moment was painful to play through so an entire mode devoted to the worse part of Alan Wake does not sound good at all.
