Epic Games has revealed its newest franchise, Fortnite, a gothic, action-survival-strategy effort. After watching the below trailer, it’s understandable why Epic’s Cliff Blezinski had some reservations about the big reveal. Not only does it bear zero resemblance to anything Epic has made in the past, but, most curious of all, it looks like a highly polished…downloadable game. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. In fact, I would be super intrigued to see Epic dive fully into the arcade space, especially given the work it’s done with Chair on the Infinity Blade series and Shadow Complex. Or it could be a full on boxed title like its previous console efforts. Time will tell.
As far as the trailer goes, it appears to sport an art style that looks reminiscent of Team Fortress 2 albeit with a gothic, monstrous twist. An action-survival-tower defense game coming from the likes of Epic is certainly surprising, but in that, “Huh. Ok.” kind of way that prohibits passing judgment until more of the actual game is revealed. So make with the revealing, Epic!
