UPDATE: Nintendo has clarified some of the things said in Miyamoto's interview. According to statements issued by Nintendo, he is staying at the company, and his role there is "not changing." He will apparently keep the title of "Senior Managing Director."
Video game legend, Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda has announced that he is retiring from his position as head of Nintendo's game design department, "to work on smaller, more personal projects," within the company, according to an interview with Wired.

“Inside our office, I’ve been recently declaring, ‘I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire,’” Miyamoto said through his interpreter. “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.” He went on to say that he's taking a leave from supervising massive games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword to work on projects that won't take as long to complete.
"What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself,” Miyamoto said. “Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.” He hopes that this small project will start in 2012.
The reasoning behind Miyamoto's retirement is entirely selfless. He wants to send a message that he won't always be around for younger developers to rely on. “The reason why I’m stressing that is that unless I say that I’m retiring, I cannot nurture the young developers,” he said. “After all, if I’m there in my position as it is, then there’s always kind of a relationship. And the young guys are always kind of in a situation where they have to listen to my ideas. But I need some people who are growing up much more than today.”
While we wish all the best for Shigeru Miyamoto in the future, we have to wonder if his retirement is coming because Nintendo has lost so much money this year and he wants to move on to bigger and possibly better things. And now that the face of Nintendo is leaving the company, how much water are they going to be in? Hopefully they'll be okay without one of the men that started it all.

What's your favorite Shigeru Miyamoto memory? Him coming out on the stage with a Hylian shield and Master Sword to promote The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is definitely mine. To show your appreciation for Miyamoto, why don't you go vote for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in our final round of Videogame Deathmatch?

I actually just wrote a report on him a few weeks ago for my business class. Interesting story, for those of you who don't know you should definitely read about him. Hell of an artist that man; modern gaming would be much different without the influences he had, and hopefully will continue to have. I wish him well in his future endeavors.

My favorite memory is when he said in a gaming mag that the Game Cube controller would be the standard controller for nintendo for the next ten years!!! And that the 64 would be backwards compatible with nes and snes. Also the 64dd would be great for his games and be out by fall 1997!!!!!

But seriously, this man invented my childhood. Thank you Shigeru Miyamoto...

Curiously, i wonder if he finished the WiiU Zelda game before "retiring"...

Hey guys. It's confirmed that Miyamoto isn't stepping down. He just wants to start a new project while also encouraging the younger developers to take more initiative.

This is a good thing because Miyamoto is going to be over seeing the new batch of game designers coming in to NCL.
Miyamoto was not going to go on forever and what better education can someone have than to be coached by the greatest games designer the world has seen.

News just in that says he is not stepping down...
man needs to make up his mind

According to Kotaku, Miyamoto IS NOT retiring. Apparently he is just changing hats.

NEWSFLASH: there's an update that Miyamoto is NOT leaving nor retiring.
He's just "reducing his involvement" on developing games to help the starting developers.

Nintendo just printed a denial of this. They say he's not going anywhere.

Thanks for deleting my comment G4tv.com :3

I've always trusted Mr. Miyamoto's judgement and I can't say I doubt his actions now, but I can only see more problems for Nintendo regarding AAA titles with his absence.
Miyamoto IS Nintendo, and for the good people here at G4 to hint that he would even consider abandoning his own company for bigger and better things is low and shameful, he's still going to be within Nintendo but on a lower step on the ladder.
All we can do is hope that this is a temporary retirement, because without him manning the helm for titles like Zelda or Metroid, we may see a slight reduction in their quality of making.

ya!

This is actually a good thing it means new original IPs for us that could turn into something huge one day. I have full confidence in the development teams from Nintendo to still pull off amazing titles without his supervision. Though this does lead me to believe from a programming and film perspective that video games need to be studied deeply at an academic level to advance gameplay and story telling to new levels and keep things feeling fresh for the gamer.

this is good and bad in many ways, good becuase then miyamoto will be doing what he wants and most definitly create another masterpeice, bad becuase this could be a predictor of what is to come in the next few years , i know this sounds bad but i hope miyamoto never retires....................... lol hes the best at what he does and i know there will be a day where he will retire for good, somewhere in the far far FAR future, and when that time comes , i will truly REALLY truly shed a tear, or two, or hundreds,........:(

LOL. "While we wish all the best for Shigeru Miyamoto in the future, we have to wonder if his retirement is coming because Nintendo has lost so much money this year and he wants to move on to bigger and possibly better things."
G4 just loves to come up with silly conclusions. The man is 59. he getting old. he is not an immortal. He's only human. Anyway hopefully whatever he has to offer with these "smaller projects" I hope they are great.

People, he's not leaving Nintendo. He's simply stepping down as the Head of Game Design. He's still working at Nintendo, just at a smaller position.

its incredibly lame how g4 always decides to throw a dig at Nintendo where ever they can. The man is retiring he is really the face of modern gaming yet G4 decides to hop on the fanboy bandwagon whenever they can (feedback anyone, Blair?) . Its very tacky to reference Nintendos stock dipping this year with a legends retirement.... Its no wonder people cant address games being an "art" form when we have people like this representing us.
