Minecraft: Pocket Edition Plans Include Crafting, Mobs, Actual Game Stuff

Those who have Minecraft: Pocket Edition -- doesn't matter if it's the iOS or Android version -- have probably noticed that there's not so much going on with it yet. Longtime fans of the blocky world-building game would probably compare it to the early days of the PC game, when there was little more to do than just... build stuff.

Mojang is aware of Pocket Edition's feature shortcomings, and is working to correct that. A new blog post on the company's website runs through some of the planned additions, in-game features like mobs and an inventory system as well as behind-the-scenes fixes to make everything run better. You can get the full breakdown on Mojang's website, or just hit the jump for some friendly bullet points.

  • A new file system – to make sure we can support items and mobs in the world
  • Item system – to be able to pick up items
  • Crafting – we know you want this :) This will probably need some iterations since the interface will be customized for the touch devices
  • Inventory system
  • Mobs – animals and enemies!
  • Optimizing rendering code – we are experimenting with caves but need to make it work better before we are able to release it
  • Clean up of code and overall optimization

Mojang's Daniel Kaplan also writes that fans SHOULDN'T expect to see a complete reproduction of the PC game on mobile platforms. Survival features are coming, as you can see from the list above, but Kaplan notes that a full port is "not possible and does not match the touch platform."

Unfortunately, there's no word on when we might see some of these new features roll out. Stay tuned for more, hopefully soon.
