Skyrim Bugs Prompt Bethesda To Promise That 'Greater Care' Be Taken With Patches

Skyrim hasn't exactly been behaving itself in the weeks since its November 11 launch, something that longtime fans of Bethesda Softworks' open-world RPG efforts are painfully aware of. The game's latest update seemed to cause more problems than it addressed, and while moonwalking dragons are hilarious always, they don't exactly belong in a finished and presumably polished $60 video game.

Bethesda is aware that many of you are dissatisfied, and has promised to be better in the future about such things. An update on the Bethesda Blog reveals that a patch will be coming to all platforms over the next week or so that will fix the issues created with this week's patch. More fixes are promised for after the holidays, both "full title updates" and "incremental 'gameplay updates' to fix whatever issues come up, along with rebalancing portions of the game for difficulty or exploits."

The publisher also promises "to treat our updates with greater care" in the future, since there's a tendency in a game as complex as Skyrim for a single fix to create new problems, as we saw this week. The focus of the team's bug-squashing efforts will be on "code side fixes... over data fixes" for now; for those who are wondering, "quest and balance issues" belong more on the data side.

In other words, in-game exploits that let you cheat your way to success are lame, but they're far LESS lame than any number of issues that could flat out break your experience and turn your 80-hour gamesave into a giant waste of time. That's the right mindset to have, I think.
