Skyrim: How To Level Your Skills Through Exploits... Not Quite Cheating, But Kinda

Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim

The massive world of Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim features 18 separate skills of various levels of importance. They are leveled through use. The idea is to reward you for skills you use often in the game -- practice makes perfect and all that. This allows you to create a very unique character based on what you actually do as opposed to what you'd like to do. If you play the game honestly, you should organically end up with a character that reflects your playstyle. So, if you sneak around a lot, you'll get better at not being seen. With a game this complex, though, the opportunity to boost skills artificially is just too tempting for some players to ignore.

Back in the days of pen-and-paper Dungeons and Dragons, when a player took advantage of loopholes in the massive rule-set to create artificially powerful characters, they were called "Munchkins" and drew the ire of DMs and other players alike. They didn't exactly cheat, but they did take advantage. So it is with Skyrim skill exploits. You can can stay within the letter of the Skyrim law but ignore its spirit, and artificially level most of the game's 18 skills, without any kind of hacking.  I don't know if the techniques detailed below are technically cheating, but it's a one-player game, so knock yourself out, and level up your skills artificially with the guide below.

One thing before you start:  Over-leveling single skills can really skew the Skyrim's monsters' auto-generated difficulty levels, potentially leading to some very difficult, unbalanced encounters, so be aware.

With this in mind, please enjoy the following guide to legitimately and illegitimately boosting your Skyrim skills.

  • One Handed, Two-Handed, Sneak : You can start "cheating" your one-handed, two-handed and sneak skills almost immediately upon entering the world of Skyrim. Once you've escaped the initial dragon attack, your guide (Hadvar or Ralof) will stop along the path when you run into a bear. The dude can't be killed, so feel free to wail away on him with your dagger, sword, axe or mace. He'll complain, but won't be hurt, and you can feel free to boost that score as high as you'd like. You can also stealth out behind him and attack to level your "Sneak" skill too. I probably don't have to tell you how cheap this tactic is, but it works.
  • Light armor, Heavy Armor and Block: As far as I know, there's no real way to "cheat" these skills, so you'll have to level them the way the game intends--either through combat, paying trainers or finding training books. When leveling these defensive skills, keep in mind: The amount you move the leveling needle depends on how much damage you take during a hit, not how many times you are hit. So letting yourself be bitten by a mudcrab 8 million times isn't a good way to level up. Instead, it's best to let yourself get pummeled by high level monsters who have high damage outputs. So, get your armor number up as far as possible, then go bother a giant. Make sure you're prepared for some massive blows, though... you don't want to get one-shotted. Alternatively, you can not worry about it. Who wants to get better at getting hit? As for Block, you can tape down the block button and walk away from the controller, no really.
  • Sneak: Sneak is fairly easy to level in semi-legitimate ways. My suggestion: Find a crowded urban area, crouch down and skulk around. Skyrim seems to reward you with skill experience every time you are successfully not spotted, so the more people not seeing you, the faster your sneak is leveled, even if the people not seeing you are friends. If you want to get shady, sneak behind a stationary barmaid, walk backwards into the wall, and keep leveling "sneak" until you get bored. Alternatively, you can sneak near the bear at the very beginning of the game.
  • Alteration, Restoration: Here's a cool little exploit that takes advantage of Skyrim's dual-spell-wielding mechanic. Set the spell Equilibrium on one hand (you can pick it up from the mage in Whiterun) and a healing spell on the other hand. Equilibrium converts Health to Magicka. Healing converts Magicka to Health. Both skills get leveled up. It doesn't come out exactly even, so you may have to rest occasionally, or mess around with gear that gives Magicka or Health boosts, but the idea is the same.
  • Smithing: This is another Skyrim skill that doesn't seem to have a boosting exploit, so you'll have to do the legwork to get this one up to par. The fastest way to get this skill up is to take advantage of the many animals that attack you in Skyrim. Skin 'em. Make the skin into leather and leather straps. Make that into leather armor. Sell. Repeat. The same for iron or steel. Find bars, make daggers.
  • Lockpicking: There is no way to cheat this skill up that I've found, although Skyrim does provide lots of locked cases and doors to level up your skill. There is also the Skeleton Key, an unbreakable lockpick, gained through completing Thieves Guild quests. Once you have that, it's a matter of just finding enough locks to pick. Skyrim's museums are good choices, as the display cases are locked. Try the Dwemer Museum for many, many cases. Personally, I wouldn't spend valuable perk points in th lockpicking tree. Once you get the skeleton key, making lock-picking easier doesn't make much sense.
  • Enchanting: Here's a great way to max out enchanting and make money in the process. (Disclosure: I saw it on Gamefaqs.com)  1) Get a ton of cheap weapons. Loot all corpses for dagger, pick them up from vendors, etc. 2) Got to Whiterun and buy every filled soul gem from the wizard. 3) Use his enchanting table to add the "Banish" spell to all your cheap weapons. 4) Sell them back to the Whiterun wizard. 5) When he runs out of money, wait a couple days, then do the whole thing again. Before long, your enchanting and wallet should be fat.
  • Alchemy: Here's another awesome tip from Gamefaqs.com. Finding ingredients for potions can be time consuming, so Go to Whiterun, where two enchanting shops are across the street from each other. Buy out every ingredient. Make potions. Sell potions back to shopkeepers -- you should make a good profit here. Wait a few days for the stores to re-stock, then repeat. Alchemy and cash at once! If you want to be really devious, break into Alchemy shops and steal the raw ingredients you need.
  • Speech: The easiest way to level speech is through transactions with vendors. Your speech skill is boosted for each individual item sold, so never sell more than one of anything at a time. The best items to sell: Daggers. Go to a blacksmith. Buy the ingredients to make daggers. Craft as many as you can. Then, sell them back one at a time. If you really want to level as many skills as possible, enchant each dagger as well. Money, speech, blacksmithing and enchanting are all leveled up at once!
  • Pickpocket: The best way to level this one is to just steal a lot. Keep in mind: The heavier and more valuable an item is, the easier it is to get caught boosting it. Here's another trick: Find the pickpocket trainers--Ahkari Dawnstar in  Windhelm (Journeyman), Silda the Unseen in Windhelm (Expert), and Vipir the Fleet of the Thieves Guild (Master) -- and buy some training. Then, immediately use your new pickpocketing skill to steal your own money back. Then, train again. There is truly no honor among thieves.
  • Archery: Before you say "Hire the companion who teaches archery, pay him and get your gold back!" this won't work any more, as of the 12/01 patch. But here's another sneaky archery exploit: If you complete the Dark Brotherhood quests, you will be rewarded with a fine horse from hell, Windmere. Windmere has a lot of health, and it regenerates very, very quickly, so you can lay into him with as many arrows as you'd like. Your loyal steed won't even attack you back. This is a terrible thing to do to your horse, but a great way to level your archery.
  • Illusion: Buy the spell "Muffle" from basically any magic vendor.  Then, cast it a lot. That's really all you need to do for this one. It works with Clairvoyance as well, but that spell uses a lot more Magicka.
  • Conjuration: Get hold of the spell "Soul Trap." Then, kill something. Doesn't matter what. A mudcrab will work. Then, stand over its corpse and case this spell as many times as you can. Wait an hour for the Magicka to refill, and do it again. Easy peasy.
  • Destruction: This is a super-double-cheesed out way to max out Destruction, via this Youtube video. It works like this: Early in the "Companions" quest line, you're tasked with fighting a Companion using weapons and not magic. Ignore this request, and load up a destruction spell on each hand. Blast him with magic. He won't pull out a weapon, but still counts as a "hostile," so your skill raises without danger.
  • Restoration: Here's a trick you should never try in real life: Find a fire trap in a dungeon. There are a lot of them. Ready a healing spell. Then, stand on the pressure plate and allow the flames to overtake you. Heal yourself as the flames take your health. The only danger is in running out of magicka and accidentally burning to death.

I hope you enjoyed this guide, and I can't help but some (all?) of these various exploits get patched in the future... but until then, go to town, you Munchkins.

You don't need to be moving like in Oblivion when sneaking. Just walk to where no one can see you and stand there. I think you might level up faster if moving, but it is not a requirement.

The best way I have found is to finish the dark brotherhood quest, and then buy the torture chambers in the new sanctuary. Then (if you don't already have it) buy healing hands from the wizard guy in Whiterun.
For one handed, use duel wield sword, and attack them until near death, then use healing hands to heal them back to full health. basically do the same thing for all other skills i.e. attack with two handed weapons, destruction magic, archery etc.

    To update your guide.
Blacksmithing: Buy any iron ore, leather hide and leather straps, mass produce leather bracers (do not improve) and iron daggers. When your skill improves, make steel armor, branded iron armor, ebony warhammers, orcish armors and improve them to sell back to vendors for a profit return. Once cash flow improves, travel between riften, windhelm, whiterun and other cities to buy up resources and craft.
Enchanting: Buy a weapon enchanted with "Banish daedra", disenchant the item and begin enchanting iron daggers with petty gems with the said enchant. The turn around is about 1k+ per dagger sale and you can use general store purchased robes to buy soul gems from mage vendors.
Speech: Sell items until your at 25 speech then travel to Riften, talk to the barkeep at the black briar meadery, ask him about maven black briar and "persuade" him. Repeat this process and you will reach 100 speech in less than an hour.
Illusion: Repeatedly cast muffle on yourself, reducing the cost of illusion spells on a set of leather armor will help tremendously, takes less than an hour to do.
Alteration: Find a tome of Telekinesis and reduce the alteration spell cost using enchanting materials on leather armor. Sit at your house and simply "levitate a bowl" for an hour.
Conjuration: Cast Soul Trap on a corpse repeatedly (cost reduction helps tremendously), maxes in less than an hour.
Destruction: ??-25, use flames to level your skill, can level off of the NPC you choose in the beginning of the game or attacking the companion during initiation trial into the companions circle. 25-75, level using fire rune (gives the most experience until 75), can attack your horse when the game is set to master difficulty but be certain to heal the horse. Once 75, buy incinerate and spam it like mad on your horse while healing the poor animal.
Restoration: Heal anything that is damaged (your horse) and improve your spells and repeat until you can afford "circle of protection" at 75 restoration. Just reduce the mana cost and spam "COP" until max, takes less than 20 minutes to max after 75.
PickPocket: In riften, get arrested for punching a guard and go to prison (make certain to get arrested with no items onhand). Save prior to picking the lock, break out and take out the guards near the entrance. After clearing the room, enter sneak mode and pick pocket skibbi black-briar and use apples and whatever you can find. Put it into his pocket, steal it back, rinse and repeat until max (takes 1-2 hours depending on luck).
Sneak: Attack the Beginning NPC when they escort you through the mini dungeon at the beginning of the game, otherwise go into sneak and attack your horse from behind. Every 6 or so sneak attacks=1 level on master difficulty.
Lockpicking: Invest a point into picking locks without getting busted and just run around picking locks or get 800+ and break them on the thieves guild training boxes.
Alchemy: When rich, just run around to each and every town, buy out all the alchemist ingredients, sell your dragonbones to get your money back, use < http://www.alchemyplanner.com/ > and mass produce potions until maxed.
Weapon skills/bow/destro/shield: Attack Shadowmere (obtained from dark brotherhood quests) and you should be fine. Shield is leveled by using shield bash (best with stamina increase and regeneration), weapon skills are leveled by damage done (sneak attacks=best) and successful attacks. Best when using summoned bow or weapons/daedra equipment.
Armor skills: Just get attacked by something strong enough to do damage without one hitting you, best if leveled early on at lower levels for both heavy and light armors to offset the one-hit ko, and heal yourself repetitively with limitless mana for restoration.

I found ways to boost my levels without using this guide and found similar methods. However, I have found other methods as well. . .
ALTERATION: Once you can use adept level alteration spells, buy the spell "Waterbreathing" and stand on the stairs in the pool under the bridge to Dragonsreach. Just keep casting the spell with both hands. *Note: you MUST be in contact with water to gain experience.
SMITHING: Kill animals left and right and skin them. Just travel and wander and take this time to also explore and discover locations. *Hint: Riften Hold has an overabundance of bears, which make 3 to 4 leather each. Build up a massive collection of skins. This may take some time. Then simply take all of the skins and all at once, turn all of them into leather, and a few at a time into leather strips. Then make leather bracers until you've run out of leather straps, then repeat. Only turn about 4 or 5 leather pieces into leather at one time, so that way you don't end up with too many leather strips, and get the most leather bracers made as possible. *Make leather bracers because they only require 1 leather and 2 leather strips.
ARCHERY: If you haven't completed the Dark Brotherhood quests, then here is what to do. Find mammoths, and start shooting them, quickly run on top of an object that they cant reach from. Just lay into them as much as you like, just beware that they tend to, for some reason, just run away if they can't reach you. So you will occasionally have to jump of the object and get their attention. then repeat the process after running back to your safe area.

I haven't finished reading the thread yet, but there is a legitimate exploit to up your pick-pocketing, unless you deem it too time consuming.
The House of Wonders museum (I'm too lazy to get the details past that), the guy will take some Necklace from you. That you can find under some wanted posters when looking into all the murdered women in that city. ANYWAY, you can give him that necklace, and he pays a decent price.1000+, can't plus.
And, keep in mind my thievery was already high-leveled, you can then sit right behind him as he sits in his chair, sneaking, which ups your chance a little bit, and you can steal the necklace back.
At first it sucks because he catches you a lot (so you just reload, assuming you had it auto-save when you walked it.).. and you do this. Every successful grab ups your level by one. (This was true all the way to 100, I believe) And then he'll take the necklace right back from you and pay you again.
Walk outside, walk inside, repeat. As level increases, the times you get caught decreases.

Easier than running around looking for people to rob. :)

Speech is arguably the easiest skill in the game to get to level 100. All you have to do is go to the bartender in the Black-Briar Meadery in Riften. Ask him about his boss, and persuade him to tell you about her. Press A continuously until you get 100. Takes about 30-40 minutes tops.

Oh --- he also takes fire damage. Just not physical.

I discovered a new one. In the "The break of dawn" quest, in Kilkreath Catacombs, create a weapon with the Paralyzation effect. Kill Malkoran with it. Then hit Malkoran's shade with it. Once he is paralyzed, he'll be permanently paralyzed and will only take magic damage. I leveled my two-handed for several levels until I got tired. Then I killed him with a Shout.

To the restoration exploit, there is a fire trap in the Ustengrav Depths. Collect the Necromancer robes from the apprentice necromancer at the beginning of the cave and you will regenerate magicka about as fast as you lose health.

Another way to exploit Speechcraft skill is to get caught committing a petty crime, and then constant persuade guards to let you off the hook. This does not remove your bounty. You can't ask the same guard twice in a row, but if you have small bounties in two cities, you can go to the guard barracks in one, persuade all the guards, and then go to the guard barracks in the other one. Rinse and repeat.

Level Restoration magic by going to the snowy path at the top of High Hrothgar on the way to Paarthurnax. The blizzard will slowly damage you--use dual wield Restoration to heal at nearly the same rate as you take damage.

Also, apparently having difficulty higher makes skills level faster.

Sneak: At the beginning of the game once you've gotten through the cave and are alone with the companion, set difficulty to MASTER and sneak attack him over and over.

Alchemy: Skill levels faster if you make expensive pots. Remember, collect every ingredient and store them in your house.

    1*Giant's toe : Wheat = 600g+ Potion,
Deathbell, Salt pile, Antlers = good potion
Bear claws, Blue Butterfly Wing, Blue Mountain Flower, Chicken's Egg, Glow Dust, Hanging Moss, Human Heart, Jarrin Root, Nightshade, Spider Egg, Spriggan Sap = 300g ish potion
1*Creep Cluster, Daedra Heart2*, Frost Mirram, Giant's Toe, Histcarp, Juniper Berries, Large Antlers, Silvwerside perch, Skeever Tail, Wheat
Creep Cluster, Giant's toe, Hawk Beak, River Betty, Scaly Phoilata, Wisp Wrappings

1* = Combine Giant's Toe and Wheat with any of these to get a 30+ gold bonus
    2* = DO NOT USE DAEDRA HEARTS FOR ALCHEMY. DO NOT EAT THEM. They can be very useful if you get smithing to 90 and get the Daedric Crafting perk. They are a REQUIREMENT for making Daedric Armor;

Smithing: Iron Ingot + Leather Strip
Usually you only need around 10 to level starting around 45. I got to 100 within an hour of constantly smithing. You can find tons of iron near markarath. Just go outside of it and go right to a camp (the buildings are dwemerish) You should also look at the Halted Stream Camp near Riverwood. Ask the bartender for work.

Barter: Using the above guide sell each iron dagger individually? I hear that in Skyrim value > quantity apparently so this may not be the fastest.

Just do this when in a fort. First activate the stone (by Riften, I think) that allows you to raise the dead once a day. Then, kill a few guys in a dungeon. Dont loot them. As you kill one, drag the corpse back to your pile of bodies. When you get in a sticky situation with a boss, just use the power to raise your army. After they die when the spell wears off, move to a safe spot and rest for 24 hours, remake/restock your corpse pile. raise em and pick up where you left off.

Also notice that if you use grand gem with enchant for helm, body, ring and amulet, you can make 100% off mana cost of any of the 4 spell class. Image destruction with out have to worry about mana.

on a side note, sneaking is real nice when in a hostile environment. done with 2+ people around and the thief stone active, its super quick to level up. when they begin to notice u, then dont find u, u get a nice little bonus. like the difference between breaking a lockpick and actually picking an expert lock. if u see people, find a rock or a corner of something [a wall perhaps] and do it from there. ull be running in place, but sneak will go up. did the same thing in oblivion. haha
