Dead Space Getting An FPS? A Flight Combat Sim?! An ADVENTURE Game?!

Dead Space 2

Would you play a first-person shooter set in the Dead Space universe? How about a space-based flight combat sim? Or an Uncharted-style adventure game? These are all distinct possibilities, assuming Kotaku's unnamed Electronic Arts insider is legit.

The source explains that EA brass commanded the Dead Space team to go bigger with the franchise, to bring it to a wider audience. Which of course means FPS, something the source says is being actively worked on. A space sim and adventure game are also apparently being planned as well.

Obviously this unsourced information should be digested with the appropriate helping of salt, but Kotaku's certainly had a good track record this year with its insider sources (MW3, anyone?). More than that, we've already seen plenty of info about the next core Dead Space game leak over the past six months.

First, a logo and some artwork for Dead Space 3 slipped out of a videotaped studio tour. Plot details followed less than a week later, revealing that the next game's setting will allegedly be the ice planet of Tau Volentis. Then even MORE details got out, about what happened to protagonist Isaac Clarke leading into Dead Space 3 and who he'll be meeting on his next journey.

How do you feel about the possibility of Dead Space expanding beyond its survival(ish)-horror trappings? Personally, I don't care what franchise it's connected to; we've gone too long without a quality space-based combat sim.

Personally, I like Dead Space AS IS.
Deviating from that will risk losing the essence of what makes Dead Space, DEAD SPACE.

Dead Space is about dread & terror.
It's about the mechanics of limb dismemberment (rather than head-shots).
It's about not having a pause menu/screen HUD, but having it appear in-game, while playing, as a hologram projection, in order to intensify the feeling of dread.
It's about being able to see the cool-looking weaponized tools (how they fire & whatnot).
It's about the being able to see the cool suit upgrades you get as you progress through the game.
It's about being able to see Kinesis & Stasis affecting the environment & Necromorphs.
It's about having that Zero-G experience.

Bring the franchise to the FPS, Space Combat Sim, & Adventure experience, and it will lose most, if not all, of the above core tenets of Dead Space.

Making an FPS Dead Space, you would lose being able to look at how cool your tools & suits are; we'll be forced to have a screen HUD; and Zero-G would just make us puke.
On the other hand, if Visceral Games can manage to make the 1st person perspective a lot scarier, while the rest of the game/gameplay stays true to Dead Space, who am I to get in the way of improvements?
If they can make firing the weaponized tools, and Kinesis & Stasis, like how DS:E (sans being on-rails) or BioShock did it, then it may just work.
If they can retain the dread, the dismemberment, & the rest of the original experience, then go for it.

As for a Space Combat Sim? NO.
Ask/Wait for 343 Industries to do that with a Halo game, the way they did that space mission in Reach.
    Otherwise....NO.

Adventure? I don't get it....Isn't Dead Space ALREADY (somewhat) an Adventure game? I mean..it's in 3rd person..idk how much more "adventure" you can turn Dead Space to. Unless they're talking about taking the horror away & making it something more like Uncharted? Then....
    ....NO. Just..NO.

Dead Space should stay the way it is.
EA should just come up with new IP's in those fields, if they want 'em so badly.
NEW FPS IP; NEW Space Combat Sim IP; NEW Adventure IP.
Don't milk Dead Space off like that....that's just IRREVERENT.

I love me some space sims, but how would that work?

As long as they can keep the scare factor I wouldn't mind seeing an FPS. Sometimes I feel the third person makes it less scary (though still scary).

I see no problem in expanding an already spread out universe because we have seen the ships and a moon base, I wouldn't acutally mind leaving Issac and Flying around in a ship or FPS as an earth Gov, it enhances the story of the universe I am invested in.

An FPS maybe. Sim and adventure? Nope.

This is what happens when business people try to make creative decisions. Just let Visceral Games do their thing and you just worry about how to make more money EA.

I like when there are INSTANCES of going beyond the third person perspective of just walking around, like jumping between train cars, or chasing after the space ship around the giant pillar. But I think anything more than that takes away from what Dead Space is. I usually don't say this, but I think Dead Space is great the way it is. I really hope they don't TMNT 3 this game.

Expanding the franchise is fine, but it must be done respectfully, and there is nothing respectful about what EA is doing with the Dead Space franchise.

The motive for the expansion is not about improving Dead Space, but it has more to do with the bottom line. The kotaku article states that EA was going to kill off Dead Space 3 because games like Dead Space are not as profitable as the more successful adventure and action game genres. The article implies that this move by EA is about making more consumer friendly games instead of one that might take risks. Dead Space and other horror titles seem to be devolving into a shadow of their former selves.

There must be a balance between making money and creating art to make a successful franchise. It seems like marketing has too much influence on the Dead Space franchise. For a game company with a name like Electronic Arts, they should know better than that.

A large portion of my interest is based on the third person perspective, and its affect on game play. If it goes strict FPS, I am done with the series. I pre-ordered and payed full price for the first two titles.

This whole idea that Dead Space would be even scarier if it was in the first person perspective is idiotic. The perspective you play in isn't what determines scariness. DS Extraction was done in a first person perspective and it was less scary than the original (although I still loved it for expanding on the story). Besides, why would you want to play in first person? You wouldn't be able to look at the cool space suits your character wears or enjoy the animation of watching them move through zero gravity as the background lighting reflects off of them.

I'm also not sure I understand what they mean by making an adventure game out of Dead Space. Was it not already an adventure when you were going through the Ishimura and Sprawl? If by adventure they mean platforming and climbing like a monkey then no, keep that in a galaxy far, far away from Dead Space. No consumer is asking for such a game, so there's no reason to make it.

Ok hear we go, I Iove DEAD SPACE and to try and make it a FPS and god knows what other changes they have in mind sux. Try and reel in the casual gamer by trying to fix something that is not broke OMG! Thats what happend to socom4, and thats something I belive that is starting to become a new trend in gameing. By makeing DEAD SPACE into a FPS changes the game play. If they want to make a FPS in the DEAD SPACE universe and not call it DEAD SPACE that would be ok. It just makes me nervous. Imagen If Infinity Ward and Activiosn wanted to change MW by makeing there next game in 3rd person? I would love it, but lets face it Modern Warfare is a game for the casual gamer and they would lose lots of fans. Im just saying, leave it alone PLEASE!!

Dead Space FPS... It can still be terrifying. I'm cool with it. Not with an adventure game though. That just doesn't sound... Horrifying. lol

I think a FPS would be pretty neat, but 3rd person should be an option too. When mentioned like this It makes me think of Dead Island. If it becomes "adventure" in the rpg style with quest and all there will be a lot of RPG's out there but they are popular. They kind of incorporated that with the Bench in Dead Space 2. Just thoughts.

Dead Space is about the horror. All other genres would take the horror out and make it just a game. It would kill the franchise. Can't be scared in a space sim or adventure style.

I think making it a fps would actually make it scary as hell. Imagine seeing a necrimorph from a fps view. Having one just pop on the screen out of nowhere in you face screaming. Would scare the crap outta anyone.

Personally I'm okay with a FPS and even a space flight combat sim, but what I'm not okay with is an adventure style game based around Dead Space. I mean Why must E.A. have to follow suit with Uncharted's success and try to copy it when you KNOW that's their main motivation for this?

I love everything Dead Space. It's one of the best new IPs this generation. I'm okay with them expanding as long as it doesn't hurt the main franchise.

Rumors before said there were supposed to be multiple downloadable titles prior to Dead Space 2. I thought Ignition was a nice, complimentary introduction to the sequel, but I don't think it went over all too well. There was also supposed to be an RTS game called Planet Cracker, but that never saw the light of day.
