Star Wars: The Old Republic Sith Warrior Guide -- You Don't Know The Power Of The Dark Side... But You Can!

So you're gearing up for the Star Wars: The Old Republic release date, pouring over which class will suit your style.  You've always wanted to wield a blade of searing light that goes vvvoowwmmm, wammm because hey, who hasn't? But the Jedi Knight? That's not the path for you. You're too hardened, too independent for ancient codes and nonsense about honor. You want to be the biggest and the baddest, a symbol of fear and power as much as you are a player. You, my friend, want to be a Sith Warrior.

You Should Play A Sith Warrior If: If Darth Vader was your hero and icon you looked up to as you grew up, you'll fit right in with the Sith Warrior. And a heavy-handed family therapist. But we're not here to judge. Like its Republic counterpart the Jedi Knight, the Sith Warrior is the first to leap into battle, lightsaber flashing across the bodies of his foes as they fall all around him.

Although the Rule of Two wouldn't be instituted until much later amongst the Sith, it's still helpful for figuring out where the Sith Warrior falls in with the Empire's grand scheme; a proper analogy would be to see Darth Vader as the Sith Warrior and his master, Darth Sidious, as the Sith Inquisitor. The latter may make the cunning and devious plan, but the Sith Warrior is the arm that accomplishes the Sith vision.

Background: The Sith Warrior is a fearless, ruthless and unyielding force of destruction. For levels 1-10 he is an ambitious student at the Sith Academy on Korriban, eager to please the Dark Lords who oversee his progress. Student rivalry is prominent and so the Sith Warrior in SW:TOR is one who has been groomed to seek out and destroy all who oppose him, even if he has to go out of his way to do so. After all, a Sith Warrior with nothing to destroy is like a Yoda who talks normal; it just doesn't satisfy.

While almost all who attend the Sith Academy are gifted in the Force, the Sith Warrior is less inclined to rely upon it than his sister-in-arms, the Sith Inquisitor. This means that, like the Jedi Knight, the Sith Warrior is built as a melee tank and DPS class, focused on lighstaber combat. Also like the Jedi Knight, the Sith Warrior builds up a resource pool – appropriately named “Rage” – from which he pulls the more powerful abilities he knows. A Warrior's abilities may not be the flashiest, but they hit hard.

A Sith Warrior is also one that players need not worry about in regards to sturdiness. For levels 1-10, the Warrior will have a fairly easy go of things, as he can handle large group attacks and draw fire away from his allies. The boost to health and ability to wear medium-class armor are things you'll certainly appreciate as you fend off the bloodthirsty beasts of the Sith homeworld.

How You Play A Sith Warrior: The Sith Warrior, as mentioned, builds up his resource pool before he can pull from it. That means a healthy and even-handed pacing of combat, with a definitive rhythm. If you've never really understood the term “key rotations” in terms of MMO combat, the Sith Warrior will certainly teach you. What's somewhat ironic is that, if you want to use some of the Sith Warrior's best – and therefore most costly – abilities, you'll need to watch carefully to make sure you're not expending Rage as fast as you build it. In other words: keep calm and cool.

How To Plan Your Future As A Sith Warrior:
The Sith Warrior's options for Advanced Class are dark mirrors of the Jedi Knight, much like the Warrior himself. The Juggernaut is an intimidating beacon of the Empire's might, a beefy tank full of both aggro-grabbing abilities and buff choices. Meanwhile, the dual-wielding Marauder figures the best defense is a good offense, and will become a master of melee DPS if he so trains.

There's a reason that the Juggernaut advances slowly and calmly in the armor progression trailer by BioWare: he's an unstoppable force and he knows it, so let's check him out first, lest he destroy us all out of jealousy. His skill trees are:

  • Vengeance, a good tree for off-tanking, as its abilities are focused on grabbing attention and dealing damage more than protecting his allies.
  • Immortal, the best option for an MMO tank player, which makes the Juggernaut soak up damage like a sponge. A cybernetic superhuman space sponge.
  • Rage, the shared tree, which boosts the Sith Warrior's otherwise-lacking abilities in the Force.

The Marauder can actually feel somewhat more like a Rogue from World of Warcraft than a Warrior, thanks to his general lack of regard for life and his talent tree options, which can cripple either entire groups or a single enemy. They are the melee DPS class, swift and sustaining in their damage. The Marauder's skill trees are previewed below:

  • Annihilation, a tree which can give strong crowd control while still maintaining strong damage output.
  • Carnage, which focuses on improving the Marauder's control over his lighstabers and body, turning him into a whirlwind of crimson-bladed death.
  • Rage, which again will seek to round out the Marauder's relatively low skill in use of the Force.

As with every other class (sorry to repeat this but remember not everyone has seen all of the class guides!) remember that you are still a Sith Warrior. Therefore, your story will still be that of a Sith Warrior. You need not worry about missing out on story by choosing one Advanced Class over the other!

Sith Warrior Equipment: The Sith Warrior is a class that follows the saying, “The clothes make the man.” Should he choose to become a Juggernaut, he'll don heavy armor and a personal shield generator. A Marauder on the other hand will wear looser-fitting, light robes that allow for the freedom of movement the acrobatic Advanced Class demands. However, for levels 1-10, worry most about medium-class armor that boosts Endurance if you can.

Also like the Jedi Knight, don't expect to start off with that fancy red lightsaber you've been craving. You'll need to prove yourself to the Sith Lords watching over your progress first, and that means not getting your hands on a lighstaber until likely sometime around level 8. Don't worry; it's worth the time and you'll be all the more eager to put it to some use on some poor Republic soul once you've got it.

Sith Warrior Skills: Like the Jedi Knight (noticing a trend here?) the Sith Warrior's abilities are focused on one thing: cutting through enemies like butter with a hot blade. Also like the Jedi Knight, the Sith Warrior is a class that begins with not one, but two buffs. Keep both up at all times, as it could mean the difference between a breezy vacation across Korriban or a frustrating, time-consuming one.

Another repetitious notice for those who've been reading the class guides: This is not a definitive list of abilities for the Sith Warrior. While we're only a month away from being able to make the hyperspace jump to that galaxy far, far away, that doesn't mean this isn't a beta, and BioWare can change any of the following as they see fit. That being said, here are some of the abilities you'll find most useful for levels 1-10 as a Sith Warrior:

  • Unnatural Might: A buff strictly focused on increasing damage output, you'll want to keep it up at all times to get the most out of your weapon.
  • Force Charge: An excellent way to close distance on some of those pesky ranged enemies, or just a spectacular way to enter the fray. Force Charge has the Sith Warrior leap to his target, smashing them with his weapon and generating Rage as he does so.
  • Smash: If you want to take out a group of enemies quickly, look no further than Smash, one of my favorite abilities. The animation is powerful and satisfying, and as an area of effect damage and stun. It's the perfect follow-up to Force Charge.

The Sith Warrior isn't here to mess around or pull off anything fancy. He's here to destroy those who oppose him, and his abilities reflect that. If you want to not only be the strongest, but also look the part, the Dark Side is calling.

Sith Warrior Closing Thoughts: As with the Jedi Knight, the Sith Warrior, is one of the more basic classes in Star Wars: The Old Republic. There's resource management in keeping an eye on his Rage meter, but you should rarely find yourself facing odds you can't overcome or an enemy that will overpower you. Other than that, it's basically your standard slash 'n' burn go-to class for an MMORPG.

The Sith Warrior is a tempting class, with an immense sense of presence and awe. There's a reason Darth Vader is one of the most revered villains of all cinema history. The story for levels 1-10 will focus on your character's rivalry with another student, and will be most satisfying if you don't fight the Dark Side and instead lash out as the rage and death machine you are. You adorable little homicidal maniac, you.
