I Am Alive

I Am Alive probably won't be released on the PC platform due to piracy concerns, according to the game's creative director, Stanislas Mettra. The Ubisoft dev is worried the PC market won't pay for the game.

"We've heard loud and clear that PC gamers are bitching about there being no version for them," he said. "But are these people just making noise just because there's no version or because it's a game they actually want to play? Would they buy it if we made it?"

"It's hard because there's so much piracy and so few people are paying for PC games that we have to precisely weigh it up against the cost of making it. Perhaps, it will only take 12 guys three months to port the game to PC, it's not a massive cost but it's still a cost. If only 50,000 people buy the game then it's not worth it."

I imagine this is a concern for most developers when they are deciding which platforms they should make their games for. I've never pirated a PC game, since I've always appreciated Steam's service, and I am happy to support the games I like. But if PC game piracy is as much of as a concern as this guys says, I get why they might be apprehensive to develop for the PC. While I may "get it" from a business stand point, it still sucks to alienate part of your audience.

If I Am Alive came out on the PC, would you buy it?

They are pissed off because a guy they pay a nice salary to that spent an ass load of money becoming a programmer is duped by some guy that has less pretigious training living in a trailer cracking their games who's computer just happens to be worth more then the mobilehome they are living in. LMFAO

    Hats off to Pirates.

Um Fallout 3, Um Rage, Um LA Noire.... How many people bought rage on pc for $80 and couldnt play it because of a bad video driver. Fallout 3 another pricey game had an ass load of issues. LA Noire stuck at 30 fps? This is a small list btw, there are many pc games that suck out of the gate. More times then most peeps know, People that bought a game turn to pirates for a fix so there paid for game will work correctly. Not many developers offer demos or beta, remember those; came with issue of pc gamer! If a game is good people will buy it. What they arent willing to do is buy it first and find out it sucks. Game developers do not sell us quality all they do is try to meet sales deadlines. "Crysis gets day one patch"....etc. one of the Call of Duty games has almost 3 gigs worth of patches. I purchased several digital downloads from direct 2 drive. Deus Ex was mysteriously wiped from my account and I needed an internet connection to play it lol. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory download had currupt archives so I took the serial I paid for and downloaded a pirate copy to play it. Ive traveled alot and having different isp's once my account was closed with 1 isp as i moved to another city that doesnt offer that isp i was unable to get serial numbers again for stuff i bought (use your email as account verification is stupid btw). Pirates spawn from issues, unbalance in the force if you will....Game developers are too pigheaded to admit it. Pre-Order lol wtf is that? They thrive on people mostly kids competing against one another to see who can get game first. They issue a disease and are upset some one else introduces the cure... What a F@#$%^ Joke!

Hey just a question. I am not a genuis pirater so i don't know this stuff, but can't you get the console version, change a few files and set it up to run on pc so isn't there plan a failure. (this part was probably stupid please correct me if I am wrong and explain it to me becuase I am interested, not because i want to try but its just interesting to know)

Second: Why in the world would you block not throw it out on PC like some previous comment your game is more likely to be pirated for a console than a PC. You will kill your clientele, and if you are thinking that i would save you money, well guess what no it would not. If you think about it you would have a greater revenue if you open to multiple platform than just console. Have fun bankrupting yourself hope you didn't spend much creating this game.

*Hey if anyone decides to make a petitione for a PC version I will join, or if you know there is one out there"

You know whats really funny, you wouldn't have to worry about piracy if the game is good. We will buy the game if its good. The fact that your questioning this leads me to believe that 1. your game sucks and you know it or 2. you've all become jaded to the point where calling you human is an insult to our species.

Strange that one would claim PC piracy as the issue when the numbers bear out that in Multi-platform games the PC version will often outsellf any individual console and in many cases has outsold all major consoles combined.

Also strange given that if one takes the titles of many of major cross-platform titles and searches google for that title name and the word download most of the links will lead to console pirated versions.

You have to love corporate goon idiots who try to justify their bull and their draconic DRM schemes by using statements and logic that is outdated by 5-10 years or more.

    PC pirated games:
    -Single Player, yes
    -Patches, no or rarely
    -DLC, no or rarely
    -Online Multiplayer, no or rarely
-Released, usually same day to a few days after retail stores
-Complexity in getting pirated version to run, easy to hard depending on crack/loader/additional software required.

    Console pirated games:
    -Single Player, yes
    -Patches, yes
    -DLC, yes
    -Online Multiplayer, yes
-Released, usually BEFORE or same day as retail
-Complexity in getting pirated version to run, childishly simple, burn ISO or copy files to HDD.

I hope Bethesda throws Skyrim sales data into this guys face. If the game is good it will sell, regardless of piracy levels.

Many pirates could care less if the company they rob from go out of business. Isn't that all what pirates try to do? Steal money from the company so that if enough people do it they will go out of business or not continue the franchise because not many people purchased the game?

This sounds like the game may have been built from the ground up for consoles, and that a PC version would require a port (which often means it can end up being awful anyway). So if they did a lousy port and it didn't sell well because it was rubbish, would they blame piracy for that?

i used to be a hardcore pc gamer, then i had kids and now i have no money to just throw at my computer for upgrades everytime a new game comes out that i want to play. i have switched to console because the only time i have to upgrade is when a new console comes out. so if the game looks like fun i buy it if doesn't i don't. and as for being worried about piracy it sounds like guy took a page out of the riaa piracy book, exaggerating numbers to make people think that piracy hurts companies. it comes down to if they pirate it they weren't going to buy it in the first place

So they don't want to release it for pc because they won't get "all" of their money. They should get over and bring it to pc if they actually want people to play their game and experience the adventure. They are just losing out on revenue if they don't.

I don't pirate games, but I just may find out how to mod my 360 (which I hear is really easy) and pirate this game. I was looking forward to this game since they first showed a trailer a while ago. But now, not at all.

I hope this guy is really good at game design, because he's bad at math and PR.

There's never been any data that shows piracy leads to a significant loss in sales. It's been spelled out in some great posts above, but piracy really only leads to people playing the game who wouldn't have bought it anyway. I wish developers/publishers would wise up and stop looking at piracy as lost sales and start thinking of it as people demoing your game. The better your game, the more of those pirates who will purchase the game (or more likely, it's sequel).

I pirated some games in college (and bought some too), I now have a family, some money, and a busy life. Buying a game is actually easier than pirating for me (I go to stores regularly, I don't go to torrent sites regularly), and I also like supporting a quality game. You know what flips that equation for me? Aggressive DRM. I might have 5 hours in a given week that I can game. If I have to spend those 5 hours getting a game to work that I purchased, because of stupid DRM or bugs, then the developer has wasted my valuable time- after I've given them money. I can't describe how frustrating this is- and it's led me to not buy any products from the offending parties (sometimes it's the publisher, not the developer, and I wait for the developer to move somewhere else). There's only bad decisions by devs/publishers to blame when it's easier for pirates to play the game than me.

Frankly, Ubisoft is already on my list, so this guy can take his snobby opinion and shove it.
